Scott Baio is 46 and Pregnant, Episode 3 - Going Back Home
This week starts off at Scott's daddies-to-be class, where Bill is explaining the three different styles of parenting. Police style, Fireman Style, and then there is Nurturing style. Bill asks Scott where his parents fall, and he says that his father was both police & fire style, while his mom was the nurturer. Exasperated, Scott says that all the talk of nurturing is fine. He's concerned though about what happens when you're bombarded with everything when you walk in the door, and you just want the kids to be quiet. How do you be nurturing then? Daniel, one of the other daddies to be, tells Scott that when he was confused about how to raise his own son, he went back home to Brazil. He was able to reconnect with his own childhood and figure out how he wanted to bring up his own child. Something clicks for Scott, and he realizes that a trip back to Brooklyn may be long overdue.
At the batting cages, Scott tells the guys about the trip back home. Cooch says he'll go too, because he's got his own wedding plans he needs to handle back in Brooklyn as well. Johnny asks when they're leaving, Scott says NO (Note to VH1, I see my letters asking for less Johnny V seem to be being read, and I thank you). Jason asks what Renee thinks about going back to Brooklyn, and if she's going to join him? Scott realizes that bringing Renee would be a great opportunity for her to find out what kind of kid he was, possibly making her willing to take more of the burden with their own child. He decides that if the pregnancy keeps her from flying, he'll simply put her in the cargo area. Problem solved. That Scott, always thinking ahead.
Back home, Scott tells Renee about the trip, and asks her to go. Renee reminds him that the doctor said she can't fly with only a month to go. Scott's laughter sparks Renee to question who is going with him. Scott reassures that Johnny is NOT going, only Cooch, who is going to be doing his own wedding errands while there. Renee decides that if he's going to be gone for a couple days they should probably "take care of some business", if ya know what I mean. Scott hesitates due to Renee's size. He finally concedes by saying "alright let's get 'er done". Romantic. With "business" out of the way and Renee's blessing, Scott heads for LAX. The plane is full of screaming babies. OF COURSE it is.
Cooch & Scott's cab ride to Brooklyn is beautiful and immediately fills Scott with nostalgia. In spite of the nostalgia, Scott confesses that he still can't get past the fact he's not having a boy. He figures his guy sperm must have been hanging out having a couple of drinks. Cooch suggests maybe the guy sperm was too distracted because they were picking up on the girl sperm. Scott agrees that this makes sense.
When they arrive in the old neighborhood Scott meets up with his old crew. First off, we meet Anthony. While checking out the old park (Dyker park for my Brooklyn readers who actually know the neighborhood) they see Anthony's Uncle Robert playing bocce ball. Scott explains that Uncle Robert was a father figure to him growing up. Uncle Robert gives Scott some advice on his impending fatherhood. "Love your wife, kiss her for giving you such a beautiful child, and then simply watch the little one grow and love her". Scott doesn't believe that it's truly that simple. They say Ciao to Uncle Robert and head over to the local Deli.
Scott is shocked to discover that they do not have a sandwich named after him. After all, he grew up a couple blocks away, and came to this deli almost every day after school with his friends. Steve and Richie, two more guys from the old crew, show up and they start talking about kids. Richie adds more fears to Scott's already growing list, by explaining to him what a colic baby is. Then he adds that Scott should wait tell she's 15 and gets her period. Then he won't even be able to say hi to her. Scott makes his way back to the hotel where he calls Renee, and says he wants to come home. The fact that his friends are the same age and have 20-year old kids who they are kicking out, while Scott is just starting out, creates even more anxiety.
The second day in Brooklyn kicks off with a trip to St. Bernadette's, Scott's grade school. They run into Scott's 5th grade teacher, who offers more advice on being a dad. All the baby needs is love. Again, Scott is hesitant believing it's that simple. He then reminisces about his first day of school, and his mom having to leave. Thinking about his own parents, Scott decides to visit the place where any good Italian Catholic boy goes for help: church.
Scott lights a candle and says a prayer to himself, then asks a nun who is sitting by herself if she has a minute to talk. In a VERY uncharacteristically intimate moment for this show, Scott tearfully opens up about his anxieties about becoming a father and about his father dying (for those of you who don't know, Scott's father passed away at the beginning of filming for this season of the show, and this is the first time it's been mentioned - and in a true show of class probably the only time). Scott reveals that part of his anxiety is not having his own father there to talk to. The sister tells Scott that it's okay, because his father now has a front row seat for everything. She also says that it's hard being a daddy, but the best gift he can give his child is to love her mother. Real love, true love, the kind of love that makes you cry. This was truly a sweet moment. Now excuse me, I suddenly feel the need to call my dad, and tell him I love him. I suggest you take a moment and do the same...
Scott decides that his trip to Brooklyn, though helpful, hasn't really helped him decide if he's compassionate like his mother or strict like his father. It did make him realize he needed to go home and show Renee & the baby how much he loves them. I feel somewhat strange, being that this episode lacked much to poke fun at. I usually prefer my celebreality leaving me feeling somewhat superior, not thoughtful and emotional. I even called my dad for Pete's sake! At least next week's scenes showed a man shower in Vegas! That's right, Vegas Baby!
