Mission: Man Band, Episode 6 AND Finale--Man Band Group Hug!
That's the story of my life...
This week, we get not one, but TWO brand new adventures in man band land. In fact, the second episode is the season finale, so thank you to everyone who stuck it out and read these recaps. Boy band music will never die! WOOOOOO!
Previously, the man band got booed off the court at a Magic game and wussed out on firing their manager because they like her boobies. She comes through with a gig in Miami and lots of scantily clad dancers. The guys are more content now with their plethora of boobies.
This week starts off with Rich taking a ton of pills for his leukemia and getting a check up at the doctor’s office. The doctor tells him it’s amazing he’s doing so well with so much stress and he’s proud of him. Rich has to wait like an hour to get his results to make sure he can continue. He gets great counts and he is happy, in a monotone sort of way, that he’s still in remission.
Chris says the only reason he went to sleep last night was so he could wake up and see the scantily clad dancers. He declares it the best day he’s ever had (in the last two weeks). The girls are spot on with their choreography, but Jeff is a little stiff (in his dancing, get your minds out of the gutter). The other guys make fun of him and everyone has a great time. They decide for their second song there won’t be any choreography and instead, they’ll have mic stands.
The nanny clone, Angela, from the photoshoot brings more clothes for their Miami gig. Bryan wants a classy gangster look. Chris likes the jacket she’s picked out again which thrills her that he likes her jackets. She picked out a pastel, tight shirt for Jeff again. Angela is nothing if not consistent. Chris says at first, they all just wanted to make it through the three weeks, but they are all starting to believe there could be a lot more to this project. Jeff decides they have to do well in front of “their audience” in Miami or they have no shot in the business. Way to jinx yourself, man.
The next day, the guys get on their tour bus to head to Miami. None of them have been on a bus in a long time that didn’t say “Grayhound” on the side. They were all excited about the bus and roll up to a Miami radio station to plug their show that night. Bryan is nervous to be on the radio and Chris makes fun of the whole project which makes Jeff do a double take. Miss Kate says that Chris needs to start treating this seriously so other people will take the project seriously, too.
Later, they do a sound check with their dancers and their first song goes smoothly. They go to start the second song, but there are no mic stands. Chris blows a gasket because he NEEDS those mic stands and starts to blame it on Miss Kate. She passes the buck and Chris won’t let her do that and just won’t let it drop. The other guys ask where they are going for dinner and when Miss Kate says the Chinese place, Rich kindly reminds her via song “Chinese food makes me sick”. Just for the record, he also thinks it’s fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer.
At the restaurant (I have no idea where they ended up going), Miss Kate whines about how hard she’s been working at this when Chris tries to get her to take the blame for the mic stands. Instead, Miss Kate throws it back at him for goofing on the whole project instead of taking it seriously. Oh, SNAP! They take it outside and Chris and Miss Kate continue fighting about it. I want to see some hair pulling, or at least some spitting, but no luck. Chris says it all did start as a joke, but more good is coming out of it.
They are getting ready for the show and talking about being nervous. They talk about such attractive things as puking and going number 2 when they are nervous. These guys were once the object of little girls’ dreams, and now we are hearing about their bodily functions. Lovely.
It’s show time! The guys hug backstage and the music starts while they are still hugging. Oops. They are quick to write it off that they blew it already as they try to shove Bryan and the dancers out onto the stage while yelling “cut the music!”. They instead have Bryan walk onstage as he starts the verse and it all goes really well. The crowd really gets into it and it’s a great show for the guys. There are no mic stands for the second song, so I guess we see who wears the pants in that relationship. They debut their new song “Withoutcha” (which can now be heard on their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/sureshotband). They are amazed there were both women and men enjoying the show and Bryan especially appreciated getting back into it.
After the show, they take pictures with fans and their dancers backstage. Rich says the show solidified them as a group and they are going to do an album and a tour and the whole shebang. After they get back to Orlando, Miss Kate tells them she’s been shopping their demos and they have meetings with major labels in New York at the end of that week. She thanks them for letting her be a part of it, and they thank her. Well, Chris tells her he’s still watching her, but he admits she must have done something. There are lots of feel good hugs and stories about second chances and being grateful. Group hug
The finale picks up where the last show leaves off. Rich tells Jeff he wants to do the project the whole way. Jeff agrees and the others don’t want to get their hopes up, but really want to get a record deal. Bryan talks about how he feels better about himself as he works out. He ends up losing 13.5 lbs. and decides he’s putting the partying behind him. Rich and Chris go to the Children’s Hospital to see cancer patients and Rich wants to give them hope by showing them he has his life back. Rich had a renewed drive to make his foundation a success (you can sponsor me in a fundraising effort for the Rich Cronin Hope foundation by visiting http://www.active.com/donate/hopestrides/watchingvh1).
Miss Kate tells them she’s chartered a private jet to fly them to New York for the record label meetings. She says she wants them to have a little taste of what it could be like for them again if they work hard. Producer meets them in the kitchen and they tell him all about their show in Miami. He was happy to see their confidence level raised. They decide to record one more song before they go to meet with the record execs to bring something new to the table. It has a more R&B feel and Bryan’s voice is so smooth on the chorus. Rich and Bryan discuss how everyone walked away from them when they hit bottom, but they are back and aiming for the top. More man hugs all around, and they get ready to impress the record labels.
Jeff is excited, but nervous, because it’s been awhile since any of them had record deals. Luckily, this time, there is no mention of how his body reacts to nerves in the form of bodily fluids. They talk about their really good songs on the way to the jet. Miss Kate takes their picture in front of the plane, ala Backstreet Boys, and they all board. The pilot wishes them good luck. Chris realizes Producer is not with them and Rich says he’s flying up himself. Jeff says he wants a reason to celebrate when they get back on the plane. Chris tells them to look out the side of the jet and see the stadium where they will be playing in two years.
Their first stop is Atlantic records where Rich has been rejected several times before. They greet the record label head and he tells them there has to be great songs and enough exposure to see who they are now as opposed to them in boy bands. He tells them the first two songs weren’t as melodically strong as he had hoped, so they play the new song for him. See, this must be why I’m not a record executive. My favorite of their three songs is “Work That Out”. I guess that’s why I write recaps about this show and the other guy is ON the show making the big bucks. The guy gave them good feedback and said the new song was the right direction. Chris is confident that means he liked it. Either that or he didn’t want to look like a total jerk on national television. Who knows? They all decide their first stop was very positive and take off in their limo for the next meeting.
Jive is the next stop and Bryan says it’s sometimes hard to hear the truth and he doesn’t know what to expect. Jeff, Chris, and Rich have all worked with Jive at one point, but Bryan is nervous. Producer steps up and says he believes in the project. The record label head asks them if they think they are really a group after only 3 weeks together. He asks about live performances, and they confidently tell him about the Miami show. He tells them to get up and sing as if they were performing in a club. He wasn’t too impressed with their “gelling” and he calls Bryan and Chris fatty fatty boomba-latties. Okay, not really, but he does tell them they have weight issues. They decide to play him the third song and he really likes it. Another positive meeting! On camera! Surprise!
Miss Kate is happy with the meetings and Jeff thinks someone will make him an offer. The show wraps up with a nice clips package of their journey over the last three weeks and how they’ve all grown as people and performers. They came together as a goofy TV show and became a group. They all think they will have a group and continue to work. They celebrate on the plane with some champagne (Bryan has a Diet Coke). A message flashes across the screen that they are continuing to work with Producer and are confident they will get a record deal. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them…group hug!
Heather’s life will now be incomplete on Mondays without her Man Band. Luckily, she’s got http://www.watchingvh1.com to comfort her.

Finale! Plethora of boobies. HIL. AIR. EEE.US!!! I unfortunately fell asleep during the Man Band extravaganza, but I'm sure I'll catch the episodes soon enough. I do like their songs kinda. They might last for a while. At least longer than Da Band from Making the Band 2.
