Fast Cars & Superstars, Episode 6—Sparks are Flying

It’s the second half of the semi-finals and we’re looking for speed and accuracy from our celebrities. This time, Gillette Young Gun Jamie McMurray, driver of the #26 Crown Royal Ford for Rousch-Fenway Racing, will do the honors of leading the stars around the track. Kenny Maynes introduces Jamie as a combination of Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller with blonde hair. I don’t really see it, but whatever bakes your cookies, Kenny.

We’re starting off the night with singer Jewel. She was the fastest in her round and is looking to join her boyfriend Ty Murray in the finals. She gets some last minute advice from Jamie about where the marks are on the track and starts up. Her first lap is decent at a speed of 127 mph, but she misses 2 marks giving her a total of 4 seconds in penalties. Her second lap is much better as she hits all of her marks and increases her average speed to 131 mph. Unfortunately, she goes flying down pit road and slides right through the pit box for a whopping 15 second penalty. Her time was 2:07.98, but with penalties, she ends up with a dismal 2:26.98. Jamie comments that he thought she was going to hit the wall the way she screeched to a stop in the pit.

Next up is former NFL coach Bill Cowher. Jamie says he is afraid for his life as Bill tells him he plans to pick up speed down pit road. Bill thinks he’s the underdog, so he’s out to prove something this round. You wouldn’t be able to tell that by his driving, though. He is super slow, but at least he is accurate. He hits all of his marks on his first lap averaging a pathetically slow 111 mph. Lap 2 finds him “slow but perfect” as the announcers describe him, and he increases slightly to 113 mph. He slows down very well in the pits and hits his box on the mark. He has no penalties, but he’s got only a slightly faster time than Jewel, ending with a 2:25.33 time.

WWE champion John Cena gets the crowd pumped up and chanting his name before he heads for the car. Before they start up, Cena tells Jamie that he wants to give the crowd a show. He confesses he wasn’t happy that Jewel beat him in the first round. John’s first lap is perfectly on the marks and he is cruising at 136 mph. Jamie calls him crazy when he asks to go faster. He did miss one mark on his second lap, but is still going 137 mph. Sparks are flying out of the back of his car and Bill Cowher looks up from his Chinese food just in time to miss it. John goes flying down pit road, but slows up at just the right time to land perfectly in the pit box. His time is a great 2:02.98, but he has those 2 penalty seconds, so he ends with a 2:04.98 and the lead. Jamie gets out of his car all excited and tells John about the sparks that were flying.

The last celeb tonight is Volleyball superstar/model Gabrielle Reece. The only reason she made this round was because William Shatner was disqualified for driving beneath the white line. She tells the interviewer she was spooked last round, but she wants to do better this time. Too bad that doesn’t happen. Her first lap is awful as she misses all but 1 mark and only rides at 118 mph. Her second lap is just slightly better when she hits 2 marks and increases to 122 mph. She does nail her pit road speed and finishes there without penalty. It’s too little, too late for Gabrielle, though. Her final time is 2:40.64, including 18 seconds worth of penalties. Gabrielle is eliminated and she and her also eliminated husband Laird Hamilton can now go home to Hawaii.

Next time, it’s the finals! There are six drivers left who will each get their own Gillette Young Gun mentor for the finals. I have a feeling that whoever gets Jimmie Johnson will win this thing because the three stars he trained were head and shoulders above everyone else. I guess we’ll find out Thursday night!
