Fast Cars & Superstars, Episode 5—Pit Road Penalties

This week it’s round 2 of the challenge. Our celebs are working on accuracy this time. Bull rider Ty Murray, former NFL star John Elway, surfer Laird Hamilton, and skater Tony Hawk have made it to this round by being the fastest in their previous round. The Gillette Young Gun of the week is Kasey Kahne, driver of the #9 Dodge dealers/UAW Dodge for Evernham Racing. Kasey won 6 races last year, but has been struggling so far in 2007.

The challenge this week is all about accuracy without losing speed. The celebs will follow Kasey around the track for 2 laps hitting marks on the track. If they miss the marks, they are penalized 2 seconds per missed mark. On the final lap, they don’t have to hit any marks, but they have to end their race by coming down pit road and pulling into their pit box without going through it. Penalties for missing the box will vary depending on how far out of the box their car is at the end. We’ve got lots of racing tonight, so let’s get right to it.

Ty Murray goes first and he goes around for two laps hitting most of his marks. He misses 2 of them, though, so he gets a 4 second penalty. His first lap is 141 mph, and his second is 142 mph. His last lap he’s flying, but he needs to slow down so he can make it into the pits. Kasey slows down, but Ty flies past him and onto pit road. He locks up his breaks and screeches his tires, but still overshoots his pit box and gets a 5 second penalty. Kasey just laughs and Ty is just happy to be alive and after penalties has a time of 2:05.53.

John Elway goes next and he easily hits all of his marks on lap one. He has a 140 mph average. The second lap, John misses one mark for a 2 second penalty, but hits all the rest and averages 141 mph. He makes his final lap and almost passes Kasey like Ty did. He slows down really well and hit his box perfectly. His total time is 2:05.33 but has a 2 second penalty so he’s at 2:07.33 which puts him behind Ty.

Laird Hamilton is the next on the track and he gets some last minute words of advice that will give him some speed on the third lap. The announcers tell us he’s still in third gear and he finally gets into fourth gear right before he takes the green flag. He then misses his first 2 marks. Laird misses a total of 3 marks on his first lap only going 138 mph. He misses 2 more on the 2nd lap and he’ll have a total of 10 seconds of penalties from missing marks. He ends with an average of 138 mph on that lap and it’s going to be bye-bye Laird. He passes Kasey as well on pit road and totally flies right through his pit box. He ends with 2:02.64 total time, but with the 25 seconds of penalties gives him a total time of 2:27.64.

Tony Hawk is our last celebrity this episode. He takes the green flag and he’s hitting all of his marks and moving at a good speed. His first lap is perfect accuracy and at 140 mph. Tony is perfect through his second lap at a speed of 138 mph. He follows Kasey into the pits and rolls to a great stop right in his box. His time is 2:07.94 with absolutely no penalties. That means Laird is eliminated tonight.

The lesson tonight is that accuracy really isn’t important this round because the most accurate driver, Tony Hawk, ended up in third place behind first place Ty Murray who missed 2 marks and his pit box, and second place John Elway who missed a mark.

Next time will be Jewel, Bill Cowher, Gabrielle Reece, and John Cena working with Jamie McMurray on the accuracy challenge.
