Interview With Asia, Winner of The Pussycat Dolls: The Search for the Next Doll
Age: 18 Hometown: Mount Vernon, New York Occupation: Knick City Dancer
The winner of The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll, Asia, not only got to strut around in her pink feathered boa, but also had the exciting opportunity to perform on stage with the infamous Pussycat Dolls. Totally ecstatic, “Baby Girl” Asia gave up the moves and became the newest member of the Pussycat Doll family. We recently had the thrill of speaking with her.
Hi Asia! How’s it going? Congratulations on becoming the winner of The Pussycat Dolls. You obviously made a huge impression both with the judges and the viewers. How does it feel?
Hi. I’m great. Thank you so much. It feels great. I’ve come so far. I grew so much in the competition. It feels good to come out on top this time.
You began dancing at an early age, right? Why don’t you take us through your journey.
I’ve been dancing since I was 4. I started Latin jazz, hip hop, African dance, ballet; everything you could possibly think of except for tap. I think as a dancer performance comes with that. I began singing just as a hobby. I started singing with my father, he had a band. I kind of grew from there. I knew definitely that I wanted to be a performer.
How is it that you ended up auditioning for The Pussycat Dolls?
Actually I saw on TV that they were having auditions, but I missed it. My sister called me up in the morning and said, “They’re having auditions right now. You have to go right now.” So I got up, put everything on and just ran over there. I didn’t even know how to take the train but I figured it out. There were so many girls there, but I’m happy that I went.
Being a young mom, did you struggle with the decision to audition?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had just made it to the Knick City Dancers. That was like a big deal for me especially after having a baby. That was one of my dreams. When I had the call-back for the show I was like, “Oh my God, I can’t leave my daughter.” I needed this job and it was really hard for me. I told them I wasn’t going to go, but you have to take a chance and not let anything stop you. Things happen for a reason and I think that’s what happened with me.
What are the Knick City Dancers?
We dance for the New York Knicks basketball team. You just go out and have fun and dance to represent the team.
Did you have to intensely study the Dolls, their music, moves etc. before going into the competition? How did you get prepared?
I was already an established Pussycat Dolls fan. I was so happy. I said, “You know I think I would fit into this group… I think I have their style.” I knew that I had a chance.
From the beginning you saw Melissa R. as your biggest threat in the competition. Was anyone else a threat?
Me and Melissa R., the both of us knew we were each other's competition. Brittany, who ended up being my closest friend in there, I thought was going to be my competition as well. All the girls were great and were truly talented.
The Dolls display so many different elements: sex appeal, confidence, attitude. What qualities do you offer that would be an asset to the group?
I think it was definitely the confidence. Of course I won that challenge. I think as a dancer and performer I offer a lot of confidence.
You seemed pretty concerned about being paired or placed with a group that wasn’t as experienced would make you look bad in front of the judges. Did it actually influence the judges’ decisions?
It’s really hard being in a group with someone that’s not as experienced because you want to look good as a group and you don’t want to stand out badly or more than anyone else. It was very important to show that we worked together as a group since we were trying out for a group. I think it played a big part in the judges’ decisions.
At times you came across as “hard to please” and high maintenance. Now that you’ve seen the show were things twisted to make you appear that way?
That’s definitely an over exaggeration. You know TV wants drama so I think they just threw that in. I think it’s pretty normal. I just like hamburgers and french fries. It wasn’t a big deal. I was just hungry.
Who supported or inspired you throughout the competition?
My biggest support was my baby and my mom. My mom was my other half. She’s been there for everything that I’ve done. She’s always helped me. She’s always been the one to support and encourage me.
Who was your support person in the competition?
After Brittany left it became Jaime, then Melissa S. There was always someone there to lean on.
You’ll have the privilege to represent as a Pussycat Doll and become a role model for other young, single moms as well. How can you encourage them?
I want to show to young women out there that you can still be a young mom and still follow your dreams. You can fight hard to make it. Don’t let yourself go. You just had a baby so you have another reason to live. You have to let that motivate you to keep trying. That’s the message I hope to share with other single moms.
Did you go into the competition wanting to learn from the experience?
You know, I definitely learned a lot. I grew as a dancer and as a singer from the show. It was great meeting girls from all different types of backgrounds and be able to learn from their strengths.
Was it hard to live in the house with the other girls?
It became stressful at times because we wanted something real bad and there were so many other girls that wanted it as well. There was so much going on that it was sometimes hard to focus on the competition. You know, we all had our ways of dealing with the stress, but we did our best.
Were you aware that there were hidden cameras that would record your every move? What about the late night fight between you and Melissa R.; did you know it might be seen?
It’s so crazy because we knew that there were hidden cameras everywhere, but we didn’t expect to get into an argument at 2:00 in the morning. We didn’t expect something like that but it was the big finale of the show. What perfect timing we had.
Were you really mad at each other or just blowing off stress and the anxiety of the competition?
Yeah definitely. We were the final three. It was normal to argue because we were all under so much pressure and everything, but we got over it.
Now that you’ve won the competition what are the next steps in becoming a full-fledged Pussycat Doll?
I really don’t know what’s going to happen next. I’m just enjoying the moment right now since I just won. Hopefully I’ll be meeting next with the label and discuss what happens next.
How did your family react when they found out you’d won?
They went crazy. I got a crazy, big family that is so supportive. They knew how much I’ve been wanting this. They went through it with me. I’m just happy I can share this with them.
Quite a few people rooted for you. What would you like to say to them?
I just want to tell them, “Thank you and I really appreciate their support.” I want to remind them never to give up and go after your dreams and never stop.
What’s the best way for your fans to contact you?
I have a Myspace page. They can reach me at Asia’s Official Site. They can leave questions, comments and I try to answer as many messages that I can.
For the girls who aren’t fortunate enough to audition for a group like the Pussycat Dolls, what would be their best plan?
You know, they just have to keep going for it. Keep going for it. Keep training yourself and going to dance classes. Never stop because you never know who's going to pass your way. If I could’ve planned my life out and knew this was going to happen… You just don’t know. Everything happens for a reason. You never know what’s going to happen next.
Congratulations again Asia. We look forward to seeing you onstage with the Pussycat Dolls!
