Interview With Brittany of The Pussycat Dolls: Search for the Next Doll

Age: 20 Hometown: Chesapeake, Virginia Occupation: Nightclub Manager/Singer/Dancer/Model
While the concept isn’t new, The Pussycat Dolls: The Search for a New Doll is the CW’s newest reality TV hit. In addition to the all-intense competition, the “Search” also offers an eclectic mix of vocals, music, dance and style. Of the nine eager and hopeful candidates, Brittany became the first eliminee. We recently spoke with Brittany and discovered why elimination is just another word for ambition.
Hi Brittany! How’s it going? Thanks for sparing time for us this afternoon.
Hi. I’m good. Alrighty. No problem.
Were you a huge fan of the Pussycat Dolls before the audition?
I was actually a really big Pussycat Doll fan. I had gotten an album and memorized every word to it. It was exciting to see a girl group who were also really good dancers. I would say I was a pretty big fan.
They obviously made a huge impression on you. How did you end up auditioning for the show?
Actually my best friend gave me a call and told me she had seen the commercial for the auditions on television. She was like, “Oh my God Brittany! You have to do this. This is totally you.” I was like, “You know what? Why not?” I’m a dancer, singer, and actress. I’ve been dancing my whole life, classical trained… I was like, “Maybe I’ll have a shot at it.” So, I went to Atlanta where I auditioned, and went for it.
You had previous dance training and experience, right?
Yeah. I’ve been classically trained as a dancer ever since I was a little girl. I was three years old. I went to a school for performing arts when I was in high school, where I did musical theatre. I went to college for two years where I also majored in musical theatre. I was a big theatre, Broadway nut. Performing and the theatre have always been in my blood. I’ve done the whole recording artist thing, getting record deals and all of that. I’ve done the whole acting thing, going on auditions, modeling, singing, I’ve been training my whole life. I’m going to keep on going until I get to where I want to be.
Was the audition process as intense as it seemed?
Honestly, the audition wasn’t that difficult. I was kind of in my element. I felt like I knew what I was doing. I was like, “Okay, I got this.” It really got challenging for me when I actually got into the house with nine girls. The rehearsals were really hard and intense. It was challenging for me to find that individual style side of me and try to be what they were looking for. So probably the most challenging part was when I actually got into the grind of the competition.
With the Pussycat Dolls being such a multi-faceted, talented group where does your strength lie? Is it in dancing, singing or what?
My strength is definitely in my dancing. I was trained in classic dancing since I was a little girl. So that was my main thing. I probably didn’t discover I could sing at all until I was in middle school. Then I was like, “Oh wow! I can kind of sing.” Dancing has always been my strength; the whole hip hop and jazz has always been my thing.
Mikey, the dance instructor, and the judges felt your style of dance was a tad bit too sexy. Did you try to scale things down?
If I could’ve I would probably have changed a little bit of my dancing. I honestly didn’t get much constructive criticism from Robin or Mikey. The only thing I heard him say one time was, “Get out of the Cheetah Club and come to the dance studio.” I was like, “Okay, well help me do that. Like, I don’t understand.” I think they really kind of tried to find something in me to make people not like. All the people that know me and all the people I’ve trained with my whole life were like, “You don’t dance like a stripper. You’re not a slutty girl.” I don’t know why they got that from me. That’s one of the most frustrating things. They portrayed me as this girl who was all out and thought she was better than everyone. She had all this confidence. That’s the thing with reality TV. The cut and edit everything.
What was it like living in the house with so many girls? Who was the most annoying?
Probably the most annoying was Melissa S. If you watched the show last night, you saw Chelsea kind of talking about Melissa and how she kind of felt like she was phony and fake. I kind of got that from Melissa too. She got on my nerves sometimes. She’s a sweetheart but sometimes it got a little too, “Oh my gosh!” I was like, “Oh my gosh… be quiet.”
The person I really did not get along with at all actually was Sisely. She didn’t really annoy me. She just pissed me off. I kind of felt like Sisely thought she was like more mature than everyone because she was a little bit older than most of us, and she had the upper hand. She was just kind of frustrating. If you remember at the first challenge during rehearsal she went to bed early. She was saying things that were rude and not nice to our group so…
There are still a lot of talented girls remaining. Who do you think should be chosen as the next Pussycat Doll?
I feel that Asia is going to be the next Pussycat Doll. The reason why I say that is because she has the whole package. She’s got everything that it takes. I said this on a previous interview - it’s frustrating to me. Like I know with reality TV everything gets cut and edited a lot. Me and Asia actually got really, really close. We became like best friends on the show. We still talk after the show and I’ve seen her since the show. We really became fond of each other and became really good friends. She’s my homie. We’d go to each other when someone was making us mad, or when someone was frustrating us, or we had to complain about something. We were always there for each other. So, I’m rooting for her all the way to the end.
Who do you feel will be the next “eliminee”?
Umm… I hope Sisely. I just hope she doesn’t stay very long.
What is the one thing you’ve gained through this experience?
The main thing I’ve gotten from the show is, no matter what people say, no matter what people think everyone’s going to have an idea of you. They’re going to make up in their mind this person whether that’s really how you are, or how you’re really not. What I really got from this whole experience is no matter what people say, no matter what experience you go through, don’t let anybody stop you. Keep your confidence and highlight your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Just keep on going; no matter what the critics say just keep on going towards your dreams.
You’ve already taken a huge first step, so what’s next for you?
Hopefully a lot. I actually got a new manager and I’ve been working in the studio a lot lately. I’m kind of working on a solo project right now. There’s a lot of things going on that I can’t really speak of right now, but you’ll be seeing a lot more of me.
What’s the best way for your fan to get in touch with you?
They can reach me through my Myspace page. The address is: www.myspace.com/onstage4life. I’d love to hear from everyone.
Thank you Brittany. It was great talking to you! We’ll keep our ears and eyes out for your future projects.
Thank you so much. Bye!
