Excuses, Excuses... - Celebrity Fit Club 4, Episode 5

We pick up Celebrity Fit Club with the conclusion of the relatively ho-hum cliffhanger from two weeks ago: Angie Stone decides to stay on the show, after some intervention from teammate Tina Yothers and psychologist Dr. Papadopoulos. Meh.

The Fat Crushers, who won last week’s challenge, are rewarded with a visit to a spa. The losing team, Hot Buttered Soul are… um… punished? with a trip to Gary Busey-land. The former Fit Clubber meets with Tina, Angie, Vinnie Pastore, and Ted Lange at a Native American drum circle. Gary spells out some of his magic acronyms or whatever; I couldn’t pay attention to anything besides his giant choppers. Seriously, what is up with that? I can’t look away.

Back to the Castle of Reckoning! BoneCrusher is the first to weigh in. So far, he’s been doing really well, with 27 lbs. lost overall. This weigh-in, he continues his success, losing 11 lbs. to bring him down to 386 lbs. Dr. Ian Smith congratulates him on doing it without resorting to surgery. This comment does not sit well with Carnie Wilson – who has had surgery to lose weight. At ANT’s prodding, she expresses her displeasure, saying she thinks it’s irresponsible for Dr. Smith to say that. Bone is given his target of 3 lbs. (lower than usual because their next weigh-in is in a week), and hurried off the scale so that Carnie can continue her conversation with Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith tries to clarify that he thinks the surgery is overused and misunderstood, and Carnie counters with an emotional defense of its necessity. They seem to reach an impasse. Dr. Smith drops the subject and moves on to the results of her weigh-in. Carnie’s goal was five lbs., but she only loses one, bringing her to 173 lbs. She admits that she had trouble disciplining herself when feeding her daughter and that she needs to tighten it up. She starts to give herself a strict requirement of only three meals a day, when Dr. Smith and Tina Yothers speak up to say that might not work with how much working out she needs to do. Dr. P points out that she has a tendency to be punitive with herself with food, and she needs to learn a new way to look at it. Harvey is surprisingly understanding with her, saying he’s glad she took responsibility for her failing and didn’t try to BS the panel. Cut to: Angie – who was chock-a-block with excuses last show – looking mighty offended.

Another new mom is next up to the scale: Tina Yothers. She continues her amazing streak of success, losing nine lbs. to bring her down to 164 lbs. Impressive, again! Her mom is also doing the plan and is down three dress sizes.

Tina is followed by Nick Turturro and then Erika Eleniak. Both of their weigh-ins last week weren’t shown due to the Angie Drama, but each lost three lbs. Nick loses thee lbs. again this weigh-in, just shy of his four-pound goal. His goal for the next weigh-in is two lbs. Erika is more successful, losing eight lbs. (double her goal) to bring her down to 132. Two lbs. is her target for the next weigh-in.

Vinnie Pastore steps to the scale next. He just misses his goal of six lbs., losing five. Who knows, maybe he just misunderstood, as he seems to have a little bit of trouble with numbers. He has been confused about his weigh-in goal before, and has thought that his weigh-in targets were somehow rigged, causing Erika to exclaim in disbelief: “It’s MATH!” Now he gets confused when Dr. Smith tells him he’s lost 20 lbs. so far and therefore has to lose fifteen lbs. more in order to get to his 35 lbs. goal for the show. “Fifteen?” he repeats. “How do you get to fifteen?” Um… subtracting 20 from 35? How about we just have someone show you how to do subtraction after the taping? His goal for the next weigh-in is three lbs.

Another success story steps up to the scale next: Ted Lange. Despite the challenges of trying to lose weight on the road, he’s been able to consistently lose, even without the food delivery service that the other celebs have been receiving. He loses four lbs. – more than his three lbs. target – bringing him down to 167 lbs. He is two lbs. away from his overall goal, and he is given the option to aim for it for the next weigh-in. He decides to go for it, saying he better go for the bigger number because he doesn’t want Vinnie to get upset.

And last, but certainly not least in many many ways… it’s Angie Stone. First we see that she and Dr. Smith went through some additional testing to ensure she has full clearance to complete the show. Her first visit to the doctor, however, is inconclusive. She’s been smoking and not taking her diabetes OR blood pressure medication, so the doctor doesn’t want to put her through the stress test. She and Dr. Smith come back a week later, and she is cleared to take the test, but she doesn’t even complete it, complaining her legs are tired. Nevertheless, her heart is healthy enough to workout, even vigorously, and Dr. Smith seems happy and vindicated, even though Angie doesn’t seem to fully concede that she could have been working out the whole time.

And there is no good news when she actually weighs in. She has gained two lbs. Dr. Smith is visibly frustrated. She claims she had worked out and eaten right, and says she is being singled out. Dr. Smith seems at a loss, and Harvey steps in to tell her she is wasting their time. He offers to work out with her every day and she hems and haws because of her schedule and obligations. It’s almost painful to watch: Weight loss is difficult and she must be busy as a working mom. But at some point (say, maybe the point at which you are on diabetes and high blood pressure medication), you have to sit down with yourself and say, “OK, this is it. I have to take this seriously now. This isn’t vanity and this isn’t an option, I only have one body and I better start taking care of it now.” She clearly hasn’t had this breakthrough yet.

She does take Harvey up on his offer and then petulantly accepts her goal of three lbs for the next weigh-in, saying she’s glad she has a goal like everybody else for a change. Maybe she should sit in with Vinnie for the subtraction lesson and we can add on a quick “How Weight Loss Works” lesson at the same time as neither seems able to grasp how the goals are assigned.

Angie continues her kvetching as they leave to head to the giant scales, and Tina and Carnie try to get through to her, but she is a broken record of excuses. Out at the scales, we learn that the FatCrushers have won and now have a ten-pound lead over Hot Buttered Soul. The results are overshadowed by Angie sullenly announcing she is leaving the show.

Will she? Won’t she? And will anyone miss her if she goes? I guess we will have to tune in next week to see…
