Celebrity Duets, September 14th – Pushing and Pulling?

Stll looking here for a Little Richard interpreter

I don't know if it's a special night or what, but David Foster is dressed up this evening for this week of Celebrity Duets. While he's wearing a suit with no tie, Little Richard is in one of his normal glamorous sparkly outfits and Marie Osmond looks kind of preppy in a headband. I guess it's not a special evening, unless maybe David is hoping if he dresses up maybe he'll actually be given some time for his commentaries. He just needs to talk over people and be rude, like Simon Cowell does with Paula Abdul. Speaking of that, it's interesting that Paula Abdul is not seen in the audience of this Fox show produced by Simon Cowell, and instead she was seen at the finale of Rock Star, produced by Mark Burnett.

First up for a duet tonight is Lucy Lawless, who'd like to be paired up with a female this time, after being paired up before with three males. Once she discovers who she'll be singing next to, she is quite intimidated, calling this singer quite the diva. Lucy launches into I Say a Little Prayer for You< and we know it can't be anyone other than legendary Dionne Warwick. Lucy looks completely awestruck to be standing beside her, although she sounds great. Their voices blend pretty well.

It seems Marie saw the same things I did. She first says that the last few weeks they were just getting warmed up, and now in the third week, they're going to start critiquing more seriously. She also saw Lucy being quite timid, and says you can't let these big celebrities intimidate you if you want to go the full distance. Little Richard again says "I love Lucy," then says, "You've been in the koolaid, girl, but you don't even knew the flavor." He tells Lucy she has to get out of the rhythm and get some blues, but it's gonna be alright, because he's coming. Figure out what you can out of that, I never had anyone volunteer last week for the interpreter gig. David disagrees with Marie, and if I knew what Little Richard was talking about, I could tell you if he disagrees with him too. He liked Lucy's performance, and says otu of all the singers, she has been stuck with more genres than anyone else. However, he'd like her to ask for a higher harmony part. Wayne Brady wants us to know that next week we'll get some of Little Richard's favorite koolaid recipes. Thank God you have him for comic relief on this show. It needs it.

Alfonso Ribeiro is feeling the heat of the competition with Jai Rodriguez. He wants the judges to really hear what he can do, but in the process he strains his vocal chords and gets a sore throat. He says it's never hurt like this before, and his biggest fear is not having a voice and being able to sing. I'm not sure if he can blame it on this illness or what, but form the start of Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, Alfonso is pitchy. Denise Williams come into join him in the duet and his pitch fixes itself as it finds hers. Something tells me it wasn't the illness.

Marie tells Alfosn he has a great way to ends songs, be it his background in drama or whatever, but he has this move he does, and s he felt on this particular song that it wasn't very appropriate. It makes it come off like it's not a duet. She also thinks Leno or Letterman would love this show because of the number of stars on here. Okay, but what does this have to do with anything? Little Richard issues out one of his mymymymy's, and says he was just looking when Alfonso did it, but his bit toe shot up in his boot again. It's really something. He doesn't want Alfonso to let his voice write a check, though, that his rhythm can't cash. He has to hold it in and hold it out. He needs to keep on punching and keep on pushing, and put that voice where he has that rhythm. While David is trying to get a word in edgewise Marie start talking again, saying she wants to hear the audience do a "Woooo" like Little Richard. David, about to go postal wanting to have his say, tells Alfonso he did great, but he tells him not to whine about being sick. He's seen Celine go onstage with a temperature of 104 and Christina go onstage when she was throwing up. In order words, Jai can whine about being sick last week, but now you can't do it the next week.

Before introducing Carly Patterson, Wayne emulates Little Richard, and says his foot is in his boot and he's got pudding in his pants. Honestly, I think doing this show with all these people is going to give Wayne stacks of new material. Carly says it's different hearing feedback from the judges, because she usually just gets a score. This is important to her, though, as she wants to do this for her career. That loud "No" you heard throughout the world was me in shock. She is thrilled with the artist she has, and knows the girls are going to be jealous, because he's really hot, and that's a real plus. Speaking for myself, that's always a plus. She starts singing Beautiful Soul, and to the delight of many young girls, including the 10-year-old sitting on the love seat across from me, Jesse McCartney joins her. I cannot fathom that she wants to do this for a career, unless she expects to be sitting on the floor in the subway with a tin can. When they finish, Wayne jumps around wildly, and says its' the 14 year old girl inside the 34 year old black man that's coming out.

Marie tells Carly the obvious, that every girl out there wishes they were her. Staying along the obvious, Marie says they're being more constructive, knowing they all want to make it to the end. She thinks Carly h as come remarkably far, but if she wants to continue, while her voice is loosening, her body is still too stiff. She gets booed, and she reminds the crowd she knows what she's talking about. Don't be so thin-skinned, Marie. She compares Carly's stiffness to how she must have been on the balance beam.

Little Richard tells Carly he has her horse, and he hopes she has her buddy. She's come a long way from before, but she has a long way to go. He wants her, too, to keep on pushing and keep on pulling. What does that mean and why does he keep saying it? Little Richard would also like Carly to keep on knocking and keep on rocking. David points out that he said what Marie said last week, and he points out that now people think she's the bitch from hell for saying it. Where else would you get a famous music producer calling Marie Osmond a bitch from hell? He would like Carly to focus more on singing from her diaphragm, and says if she does he'll be her fan til the end of the show. I think the other two are getting to him. It will take more than her singing from her diaphragm.

Hal Sparks will be singing with a pop rock icon this week, and he says although David wants him to stop going from 0 to 10, he's going to continue to do it his way, so that it strike David right in the forehead. Hal starts off singing Come Sail Away, and is joined by Dennis DeYoung, formerly of Styx. They totally rock the place out, but I have to ask what happened to this real Dennis DeYoung. I'm looking for the guy with the dark, curly locks and mustache, and then I realize it's been 25 years since I saw that guy. I'm suddenly aware that I have just aged myself possibly even more than Dennis DeYoung. Never mind; he looks wonderful and youthful.
