Celebrity Duets, September 7th – Unintelligible and Punny

It's Marie and Little Richard, once again.

Okay, I'm willing to give Celebrity Duets another try. Anybody else? It was a little slow going last week, and many people said they only watched the first hour, then turned it off. I stick by last week's assessment that they need to let host Wayne Brady improv a little. We'll see if they took my advice.

Joining Wayne are judges Marie Osmond, Little Richard and David Foster. Wayne points out that we learned last week that Marie wasn't afraid to speak her mind. He doesn't think Little Richard even needs an introduction, yet thinks he may need an interpreter, and I do believe he's correct. Wayne also introduces Little Richard's loud, white sparkly outfit as yet another judge. Producer David Foster is called extremely opinionated, and Wayne points out that's if Marie lets him get a word in. No kidding. Last week we didn't seem to hear enough from him.

First up tonight is Hal Sparks, who was told by Marie last week that he was too white on his son. This week he's playing to win, and he's hoping to finally be white enough for Marie. He doesn't read sheet music and didn't even sing in church, so this is all new. He launches into what seems like a fantastic version of I Want to Know What Love Is and is joined by by Wyonona Judd. It only gets better after she joins, and Hal doesn't seem to hold back. At one point she grabs him and pulls him to her, while he kisses her on the cheek at the end, and it seems to surprise her. Wayne tells him you can't do stuff like that on a family show, then asks how singing with Hal compares to her mom. Wynona says she's the mama now ... and the boss, and asks Hal to "Come to Mama." Alrighty.

Marie talks about Hal sharing the mike with and stealing a kiss from Wynona. She tells him that was pretty good for just one week , and issues a "Hail to the chief!" As Little Richard opens his mouth we all take a deep breath. He tells Hal he let it out tonight, says something about kissing then tells everyone to shut and says he enjoyed it . He says Wynona is a great singer and a favorite of his. It's going to take everything he's got. I'm sorry if this seems a little disjointed, but it's not easy recapping this guy. David says Hal did really well, but if he would wish one thing, it would be that he wouldn't go from 0 to 10 so fast, as you need a 5 in there as well. hal says it would be a little easier to do that if the song was more than a minute long. He's got a point there.

Lea Thompson had some help this week from her daughters who are 15 and 11. One of them is as singer herself, and when they listen to Lea practice, they say, "Feel the music, Mom!" she just hopes this week to not embarrass her two girls. She comes out with a short dress showing a figure I didn't even realize she ever had before. As she launches into Heave Is a Place On Earth, Belinda Carlisle joins her on stage. Lea is showing a lot of promise, just as she did with her second tune last week, although there were just a couple of clinkers. Belinda is asked by Wayne afterwards how this met up with her expectations of Lea. She says she knew she would be a good singer, but she was really surprised about their vocal blend, believing they sounded well together, and says it's hard to do.

Marie tells Lea she had fierce energy when she started, and says it was great. She rocked it right away. Marie also agrees with Belinda, and says to sing with the lead singing of the Go Gos, she has the whole house go-going. Little Richard tells Lea that when she came out, she reminded him of Tina Turner, but he's talking about her legs, not her voice. He also tells her she's already the princess, but he wants to make her the queen. Huh? What does that have to do with anything? Wayne chimes in that he thinks Richard is waiting for the swimsuit competition. David mentions how Lea didn't want to disappoint her kids, and he says she didn't. This delights Lea to no end.

Cheech Marin feels quite a challenge this week, and says he wants to make David eat his words, for last week telling Cheech that he wouldn't win. He starts to sound a little like Little Richard, though, saying he wants to tell all Latinos that if they vote for him, that's one step to a faster citizenship. He comes out to sing tonight, and he seems to have good energy, and is a little more lively than last time with Randy Travis. Singing Been There, he's joined by Clint Black singing and playing the harmonica. The bridge seems pretty good, and I have to say Cheech is just so cute dancing out there. Wayne asks Clint how singing with Cheech compares with singing with his wife, Lisa Hartman-Black. He says other than the kissing, he's never seen Lisa wear a pink tutu. Showing Cheech's girlfriend in the audience I have to say I think she's even younger than I am.

Marie tells him it was great, and says he put a little reach in the Cheech. Huh? I think Little Richard's thing is catchy. He says that last time he told Cheech he has a nice voice, and asked if he knew it, but now he thinks he got in the closet and found something besides the closet, and he's pulling it off the rack. "Mymymymymymy! You did it!" If you are Little Richard interpreter, please contact me at the email at the end of this article. Even David says Little Richard confuses the hell out of him. The good news David has for Cheech is that he's the only person out of those in the competition that has had a hit record. The bad news, though, is he's not going to make it to the end of the competition. I tend to agree, but he still seems fun to have around.

Alfonso Ribiero says that when David Foster says you're off, like he told him last week, you have to step the game up. He's exhausted doing this show, as he also has a days job as director, and when he leaves there, he then has to come and sing and be a performer. On stage, he sounds great as he launches into On the Wings of Love and is joined, of course, by Jeffrey Osbourne. At the bridge they split off and go into separate areas of the audience. I was waiting for them to harmonize together, but they only did a tiny bit at the end. Jeffrey says he didn't have to really do anything working with Alfonso, as he was so well-prepared. Alfonso tells him he's the man.
