Some Not-So-Subtle Words From Our Sponsors - Canadian Idol 4, Episode 30

Only two remain

Ben begins the show by introducing this week’s guest coach, Tony Bennett. With his infectious smiling eyes, he cues Gerschwin and begins a smooth performance. With his years of experience in commanding the stage, he works his way through the band, introducing their solo sets and kicks back into a passion filled scat that leaves the audience wildly applauding. After Mr. Bennett reveals to Ben the marvellous experience of working with artists in his new album “Duets” and Canadian Idol’s top three singers, another performance is called for.

The next performance includes our own competitors, who peek out cutely from behind the grand piano on stage. Along with the theme of the Standards which Tony Bennett masters, the fun and flirty overtone is dampened by Craig and Eva’s obviously scripted expressions. At least Tyler is able to get into the groove and play around with the music. There is no doubt that they have eliminations on their mind. Nevertheless, the audience pays their dues for the entertainment.

Next Tony Bennett makes an encore appearance, performing another warm and honest song that sets off a wave of glistening eyes and sincere smiles across the audience.

While the performances brighten up this elimination episode, an idol show isn’t complete without paying some attention to the judges. First and foremost, Zack gets in a few words about how honoured he feels to spend a summer with Canada in this fashion. Unlike Zack who focuses on himself, Jake has a few words about the singers, who he saw as making it to the top ten from the very beginning. Sass comments on how all the competitors fared well in the media spotlight and Farley acknowledges that they all learned about credibility.

Before the results are announced in this hour-long episode, a few of cheesy feel-good clips are called for. This year, to give the Canadian media a taste of what the singers must endure, Canadian Idol held an alternate competition for media members. Media icons from cities across Canada learned what idols experienced when they went through singing auditions of their own. In addition to receiving comments and critique from the judges, they also had styling advice and singing lessons. All their hard work boiled down to a final strut on stage in front of a live audience. After the judges consult eachother, the Media Idol title is awarded to Shannon Tyler of Big Earl 96.3 from Edmonton, AB.

After this painful parody of the real competition, it’s back to the real singers and their trip to New York. The singers travelled through the streets of New York in only three hours, where Tyler got to chow down and Eva got to check out the odds and ends of shopping in the Big Apple. After this quick clip of their trip, Canadian Idol’s top three singers give the audience an encore performance of one song from last night’s show. Tyler sings another flawless rendition of “It Had To Be You” and demonstrates his eternal star power through his fancy footwork and deep vocals.

Before Eva and Craig do their encores, all three singers must put on their promotion faces. This time, Telus is the sponsor. So, with carefully articulated phrasing, Eva, Craig and Tyler beam about how much they love their Telus mobile phones.

Before another frustrating skit, we gain a glimpse of each singer’s personal thoughts about the entire competition from inside the Idol mansion. Tyler voices his determination and passion and attributes Idol to having helped him discover his country-rock sound. He’s definitely not ready to end his singing career. Eva realizes that she needs to stop and realize how blessed she is, emphasizing her desire to meddle in a variety of musical styles that include Latin flair, bongo drums and flute. For Craig, he is most thankful to Idol for putting his name out in Canada (ie. giving him publicity?).

Enough heartfelt confessions, it’s time for something less sincere with Eva, who performs “God Bless The Child” again. Good thing she didn’t choose to scat again, as we don’t need an encore embarrassment.

Speaking of embarrassment, the next skit stars past Idol contestant Elena Juatco. Things begin with Elena conversing with a few stuffed animals while the three idols are off to New York. When they return to the Idol mansion, she presents them with care packages, each one containing Kraft Dinner (another sponsor!). Of course, they all must cook it up and eat it right there, but suddenly the lights go out and when they turn on again, one of Elena’s stuffed ducks has consumed all the KD! (insert amused laughter . . . here?)

Next, Craig has a second go at “The Way You Look Tonight”. While he doesn’t seem overcome by nervousness this time around, he does seem distracted, probably by the impending results that could possibly end his stay in the Idol mansion. After his performance, it’s finally time for the results.

Ben first summarizes Craig’s performance with Zack’s pride in his truth and honesty. Next, Ben calls to attention how Jake liked Eva’s ability to show poise. And finally, Tyler, whose outgoing spirit brightened up the whole show for Sass.

(drumroll) The next eliminated singer is Tyler Lewis. The audience is hushed from shock that their favourite country boy is no longer in the competition. Eva, on the other hand, feigns surprise with opened eyes that don’t quite distract attention away from the huge smile beneath her dainty hand. Nevertheless, all the singers share a hug out of sportsmanship and Tyler has his final performance on Idol. He sings “Just a Gigolo, I Ain’t Nobody” with the same charisma that I hope to see from him in the future.

Zack tells Tyler that he was clearly the star of the show tonight when it came to performances and Jake looks forward to his country-rock flavour in the future. Sass advises that Craig bring out his enchanting side and Farley reminds Eva that she is a triple-threat. Next week, Craig and Eva will sing it out for the title of Canadian Idol.
