No Curtains For This Debutante - Canadian Idol 4, Episode 26

A disappointing result

Another elimination tightens up competition more. Next week, there will only be four singers left. This episode, it’s curtains to another Canadian talent.

Martina McBride graces Canada with her country talent first by singing “I Can’t Stop Loving You”. Eva joins in first with a voice that surprisingly upstages Martina’s vocals. Next, Tyler jumps in with his signature bellow, resting his hand on Martina’s shoulder. At the side of the stage, Chad gives Canada a dose of his seduction and Steffi tweets out a set of refined notes. Craig finishes off the show with his predictably crystal clear vocals.

3.1 million votes went towards these five singers, but how will the be distributed? Looking back at their performances, they were all successful in reshaping country music, making them all accomplishers of “making it their own”.

After Ben gushes over Martina McBride’s successful career, she gives the audience another taste of 100% country music. Her easy-going performance of “Till I Can Make It On My Own” is returned by an appreciative applause. Before the cheers die down, Ben jumps in to provide some publicity for her newest album “Timeless”. If you’re into country, then I guess you’d be interested in buying it.

I’m more interested in the results. Steffi sits at the edge of her stool listening attentively to Ben’s commentary of her performance. While she has constantly entertained Jake and continually produced favourites for Sass, she lands a spot in the bottom two. Regardless of being this, she never loses her bright smile.

Next, Ben goes through the rest of the performances. Craig’s “Always On My Mind” showed maturity, but Zack felt that his unique instrument required him to be more obnoxious. Jake’s confidence in Tyler remained untested when he sang a hybrid version of “Suspicious Minds”. When Eva performed “Here I Come Again”, she showed personality and took charge of the stage. Lastly, Chad captured the sentiments beneath “If You Could Read My Mind” while maintaining his unique voice. The singer to land a spot next to Steffi in the bottom two is Eva, who shows some disappointment when her name is called.

Zack says that he would’ve had to bang his head until he became unconscious before predicting these two as the bottom singers of the week. Going along the same lines, Jake comments that the two singers with the most personality and charisma are at the bottom tonight. Looking ahead, Sass advises the performers next week to ignore what others are telling them to do and follow their hearts. Farley anticipates next week’s song selections because the judges get to choose what the singers will perform. Hopefully, their song selections will be tailored to each performer’s potential, but more importantly, that they will live up to their capabilities.

When Ben announces the results, Eva tosses her head back in relief and provides Steffi with a quick consolation hug. Of course, Steffi still has a smile on her face. Ben thanks Steffi for surprising Canada with her refreshing presence. Looking back, Steffi has discovered herself through this competition and plans to sing forever. And most likely, she will as Zack predicted that “Steffi D will be the most famous person ever associated with this show”. To her friends and family members, Steffi assures that she loves them and will not give up singing.

As she performs her finale on Canadian Idol, she hands each judge and fellow competitor a token to remember her by. Maybe a bow? In any case, her performance is still energized in spite of her elimination. She zips through the audience and back on stage with an infectious grin that will be missed on this show. To show their undying support for Steffi’s phenomenal talents, Farley and Zack hoist her up on their shoulders while the audience applauds her.

Meanwhile, I’m at home sulking and certainly not applauding Canada’s decision. But on the bright side, this was only Steffi’s debut and I’m pretty sure her curtain call won’t happen for a long time. Whose show will come to an end next week? If you were a judge, what songs should our remaining singers perform? I’ve got my picks, what are yours? Email me: brianne@realityshack.com.
