How Stripped Do You Want It? - Rock Star Supernova, Week 7 Performances

Rockers Unplugged

This week, we went acoustic and stripped down, with a string section. For the rockers, that meant musically. For Dave and Tommy it was literal as they stripped their shirts off. Even Brooke looked alarmed. Nipple rings, Dave, really?

We get a very brief, censored montage of Vegas. Judging from the pics on the Rock Star website, a good (drunk) time was had by all. Back at the house, everyone was nursing serious hangovers during song selection but it didn’t stop them from fighting it out for Gilby’s song. Toby and Dilana both wanted it but Dilana was willing to give it up only if Toby would run around the pool naked. Thank you, Dilana, for reading my mind! Performing an original song was also up for grabs but only Ryan and Zayra were interested, with Zayra making a case for needing it because she owns a condo in the bottom 3 and Ryan relented.

Dave (shirt back on or as on as it usually is) did not cut the rockers any slack this week either. They thought they were golden because they fought over Gilby’s song but now he was on them for not fighting about original song. Jason said that a lot of them got in because of their songwriting skills, why wouldn’t they want to show them off, especially at this stage? After the tough love, Dave asked Zayra to get it started.

Zayra: Lluvia de Mar (original song in Spanish)
Look of the Week: Bra, body paint and parachute as skirt. No, I’m not kidding.
Her take: Reminiscent of her REM song, she was really belting it out at some points.
Judges’ take: Dave thought it was beautiful but Gilby still wanted to see how she’d be singing their style of music. TLee said it reminded him of Massive Attack, who he loves, but it may not be right for them.
My take: I think singing in Spanish was a mistake because the band and viewers should understand the actual words if you’re showcasing your songwriting skills. That said, it was beautiful (the song, not the look).

Magni: Starman/David Bowie
His take: Classed up in a sharp white suit, Magni really let the full range of his voice shine through.
Judges’ take: Usual Iceman lovefest. Jason asked if this was the most dressed up he’s ever been on stage and Magni said this was probably the most dressed up he’s ever been. TLee was priceless: “I bet you've had to rock that in court because I know I’ve had to.”
Tommy, I love you.
My take: This was the performance I was waiting for, when it all came together. Magni connected with the song, the audience and the emotion of it.

Patrice: Message in a Bottle/The Police
Her take: Normal hair for a change but there was a weird bike shorts/torn skirt combo that confused me. Her version was faithful to the original.
Judges’ take: Dave thought it lacked intensity but acknowledged that they’ve been hard on her but only because they believe there’s a great performer inside.
My take: I think he was being kind. Week after week, Patrice does the same thing, despite the fact that it’s not working for her. Compared to the others’ approaches, she’s bland.

Lukas: Hero/Chad Kroeger
His take: He sang seated, playing guitar. In addition to the usual glam makeup, he was wearing a sleeveless shirt with a priest’s collar. Church of rock, perhaps?
Judges’ take: Dave praised his dynamic vocals while Jason got on him again about locking up his voice.
My take: Both TLee and I didn’t like the sitting because Lukas looked like he was being forcibly held down. One of my favorite things about him is his twitchy stage presence. This was the perfect follow up to last week’s Creep.

Storm: I Will Survive/Gloria Gaynor (Yeah, you read that right.)
Her take: She made an effort to switch up the arrangement and threw in a few “asses” in an effort to rock it out. Apparently there was a sale on suits because she wore one too.
Judges’ take: TLee said it was sautéed in wrong sauce. No one liked it but Stormi just smiled and said that it’s okay, she likes spanking.
My take: I’m a little tired of her aggressive sexuality and the constant risqué comments. I also didn’t think it was as bad as the guys said – at least she didn’t do any Saturday Night Fever moves.

Toby: Solsbury Hill/Peter Gabriel (with Gilby)
His take: The song showcased his voice nicely except for the end when it got a little screechy. And oh yes, he busted out the bongos (I have to add literally because I know that our readers have filthy minds).
Judges’ take: Dave and Gilby thought it was killer. TLee said he can’t question Toby’s commitment after seeing the lengths he went to for this week’s song. He also complimented Toby’s ass at which point the camera focused on it. Toby complimented Dave on the new Panic Channel CD and Dave joked that he had to correct what he said before, this was the best performance of the night. Toby – doesn’t just show his own ass, but kisses others’ too.
My take: Overall, one of his better performances but even at this point, it takes him too long to lose his fear and get into the song. I too enjoyed his ass (but not the bongos).

Ryan: In the Air Tonight/Phil Collins
His take: Looking dramatic in a velvet army jacket with the spotlight on him, he put the performance together well. The song showcased his strong vocals. The song was quiet at the start and then the drums joined in halfway through.
Judges’ take: Dave thought it was the best performance of the night. He also wanted to give props to the string section, especially the blonde (who looked like she plays for the Playboy Philharmonic). Gilby said he’s enjoying the transformation and Ryan said that he wants this job.
My take: A great follow up to his Depeche Mode results show performance, Ryan has really been exploring different moods every week. He’s got my attention.

Dilana: Cat’s in the Cradle/Harry Chapin
Her take: Wearing a cast-off from Elvira’s closet, Dilana kept it pretty close to the original but threw in her usual Dilana energy.
Judges’ take: Dave took the title away from Ryan and told Dilana that hers was the best performance of the night. The guys told her to keep doing what she’s been doing and she responded that she will because she’s the one.
My take: I must have been watching a difference performance because I totally don’t see it. It was good but I thought both Ryan and Magni were better. I’ve always hated this song too. I have this concern about Dilana, that Supernova will take her down to the wire, to show that they could have a woman but pick a guy instead. Not to take away from her talent but I’m thinking that it’s part of the reason that she can do no wrong right now.

Bottom 3: Patrice, Toby and you guessed it, Zayra.

This was not a stellar night, although there were some strong performances and a few fantastic ones showing evolving talent. If they do another double encore, it’ll be Ryan and Dilana even though it should be Ryan and Magni. Maybe I was distracted by all the nudity, maybe it was the acoustic vibe or maybe it was an odd grouping of songs but I was energized this week. I’m hoping that some new people land in the bottom 3 because it seems like the rockers do their best work out of desperation. There’s only so many times that Daddy Dave can take them to task for not getting it before they run out of time.
