Interview With Zayra Alvarez of Rock Star: Supernova

Maybe you’ve been voting for her, maybe you’ve been voting against her. Maybe you’ve started wearing spandex bodysuits yourself. But we all know that Rock Star Supernova wouldn’t be the same without Zayra and the unique energy she brings to the show every week. Zayra and I spoke about music, the show and oh, yes, the bodysuits.

Did you always know you wanted to be involved in music?

Zayra: Ever since I can remember, I knew this is what I was supposed to be doing. Life takes you in different directions… you follow the direction of your parents for awhile and then you take off (laughs) and do your own thing. And that’s what I’m doing.

Your name – it’s beautiful and unusual; does it mean anything?

Z: I’m sure it means something but I have no idea. Maybe you can find out and tell me? My mom… didn’t have a name for me when I was born. Her friend was saving that name for her future daughter that she never had because she had two boys so she gave [my mom] that name and that’s how I got it.

I read in your bio that you went to college because your mom wanted you to have something to fall back on. What does she think about what’s going on in your life right now?

Z: I get it, they wanted me to have an education… to have something safe to fall back on. And now they cannot believe it. They had no idea.

My two favorite performances of yours were Everybody Hurts which just blew me away and I loved what you did with All the Young Dudes. That was amazing. Everything you do is so unique, how do you decide what you’re going to do that week? What’s the process that you go through?

Z: Well, I don’t have a lot of time to really think things through here. It’s basically song selection, next morning rehearsal. You got to have a good idea overnight or dream about it (laughs) or wake up really early in the morning and meditate. I always try to make it… feel like it’s mine.

I have to talk about the outfits. How many spandex bodysuits do you have in your closet?

Z: (laughs) My god, not enough.

(laughs) I think that’s what T-Lee thinks too.

Z: (laughs) They’re my favorites, are you kidding me? It’s so comfortable. Anything goes, you know how it is.

Are you doing it in part to get the guys’ attention, to get them to focus? Because it seems to me that it matches what you’re singing – the look fits with the song.

Z: I do it specific to the song. I can’t choose an outfit until I know what my song is and then I go from there.

You’ve been living in the bottom 3 or bottom 5 every single week, but you know what, it’s week 7 and you’re still here. What do you think has kept you in the show?

Z: I wish I knew. It’s just a miracle (laughs). Every week, they freak me out and I’m like “oh my God, this is it!” And I’m still here. They just love freaking me out every week.

But every week, you handle it so well, you always laugh it off. Last week, it seemed like you were disappointed you weren’t going to get to perform.

Z: Because I was really excited about my song and I was gonna bring it, I was ready. I have to stay ready every week because they really freak me out. But it was great, are you kidding me, I wouldn’t miss Vegas for anything.

I know they keep you guys pretty locked down. Do you get to talk to your friends or family, do you see what people are saying about your performances?

Z: Hell, no. If anything, we have 15 minutes a week and we can’t talk about anything but “I love you, I miss you, bye.” I don’t have any access to the internet either.

It seems all of you get along really well, it seems like there’s a lot of positive energy in the house. Is everybody as supportive as it looks?

Z: This is really an amazing group of people and you have to fall in love with everybody. We really love and enjoy everybody’s company, we would have killed each other if it wasn’t for that. Oh, there’s Stormi, she just came in, oh my God, I’m looking at her butt (laughs)… Crazy stuff like that, it’s just a fun group.

Can you tell us a little about Vegas? Because I saw some pictures and it looked a little naughty.

Z: Oh my God, it was perfect. We got there in style, like rock stars, in a freaking jet, my first jet and I can get used to it easily.

Taste of the good life?

Z: I highly recommend it. It was awesome!

Fun and sweet, Zayra’s grateful for every moment of the wild ride she’s on and she likes taking the viewers along with her. Can’t wait to see more of what she’s got in store for Supernova, and for us.
