Launch My Line, Ep. 7 – The Great Time Crunch

Welcome to the beginning of the end of Launch My Line. We start off with a recap of the whole season, as ten aspiring fashion designers descended on Los Angeles to pursue their dream. Aided by experienced designers, they crafted outfits that would form their first line of clothes. Every week, one of the aspiring designers was dropped. We're shown shots of the defeated professionals: Dan, David, Kevin, Vanessa, Marilyn, Patrick, and Louanna. The three remaining are the fashion critic Merle, the jewelry designer Kathy, and the DJ Eric.

The designers arrive at the studio and have their breakfast. While they eat, they talk about their designs and how much they want to win. Kathy tells us she plans to make jewelry that would complement her clothes. Both she and Merle are surprised that the remaining male designer is a straight man.. Merle adds that she would have sent Eric home a long time ago. The professionals also wonder what the final challenge will be. Guesses range from "make twenty-one looks" to "make enough clothes to fill an attic."

The twins come in and invite everybody to the runway. There, they congratulate everybody for making it to the finals and spell out the rules of the final challenge. The professionals will have to design and make three separate looks over the next two days. The first look has to have "non-traditional" pockets. The second look has to involve ruffles in some form, and the third look has to be an evening gown. Furthermore, the judges will be examining the whole line, which means the designers may want to alter or even scrap a look. If they scrap a look, they have to make a new one using the same elements and the same inspiration. For instance, if Kathy decides her dress from the second challenge is beyond salvage, then she has to make a new dress that follows the rules of the second challenge.

The twins realize they are asking a lot and provide help in the form of eliminated professionals' experts. Everybody except Akiko, Kevin's expert, is present, so each finalist will have two more experts assisting them. As in the first episode, the experts get to chose the professional they'll be working with. Jim, who was last out, gets first pick, and he choses Kathy. Roberto also picks Kathy, who is pleased to have both guys. Coco and Tressa pick Merle, leaving Eric with Julie and Susan. Eric tries to be a good sport and tells us that he wouldn't have wanted anybody else, but he also notes their designers were the first out.

The professionals and their experts get together. Kathy informs her new assistants that her line consists of gowns and short dresses. She also tells them she imagines the ruffle dress as a red cocktail dress with an open back. Merle tells her new helpers her target customer is a woman with sophisticated but understated tastes. She also delegates jobs to everybody: Coco will be working on the pocket look, Thai will handle the evening gown, and Tressa will tackle any needed alterations, while Merle, presumably, works on the ruffles look. She discovers a problem: No fabric that she considers suitable for a ruffled dress. Eric tells his crew that he makes "short, tight, and sexy" garments. He imagines the pocket dress as being snug.

During the commercial break, the 30-second clip shows the professionals picking their models for the big show. Galina wants to pick her team's models all at once, so they can make certain of getting the women they want. Merle tells her no. Everybody is going to take turns. Galina wants to show Merle her list of models, but Merle won't look at it.

Kathy's group is also working on their projects. She and Roberto are working on the red ruffle dress, while Jim is doing the pocket look. Kathy is thinking of making the evening gown a "backwards kimono," which fits with her line, as her second dress resembles a kimono. Merle tells us that she has achieved the apparently impossible: getting along with Coco. She also mentions that Coco is conceptual.

The twins send in the models for their fitting. In addition to their usual chores, the designers also have to do a "run-up," in which they decide on which order the models will appear. As everybody is also showing ten outfits, they will have to decide who wears what. Often, this will involve seeing what look fits a given model the best. The more looks that fit models, the fewer alterations a team will have to make. During the fitting, Merle realizes that one of her dresses is going to need a new front. Kathy realizes she should probably have more gowns, while Eric is pleased with Susan's walk. Roberto tries to lighten the tense mood of his teammates by pulling on green gloves and telling everybody that he's "Doctor Couture."
