High School Reunion, Season Premiere On TVLand January 13
I have such residual feelings of my own high school experience, I know I wouldn't have wanted my reunion filmed and broadcast on TV. I watched the first couple of episodes of the new season of High School Reunion and knew I would have been like Cyndi. She stepped out of the car to greet her classmates and no one knew who she was. However, I would not have been hiding the secret she reveals later.
In fact, I did have that experience. My liked-minded friends and I were so sure that we would have that experience, that we didn't even officially go to the 20 year reunion. It was held in a banquet room of a local restaurant, and we got together in the regular dining area and had dinner, then went downstairs to the lobby and watched people walk in and out and to the bathrooms, deciding to only speak to people if we wanted to. We were at an advantage being nametag-less; the others weren't. And yes, true to our expectations, many people didn't know who we were.
It makes me wonder if we all have different experiences, then, watching High School Reunion. This season is the 20 year reunion of Chaparral High. They have all the stereotypes there from the jocks, to the nerd, the gay guy, the popular girls, etc. Just like we all have different experiences at our reunions, we all have to experience watching other people have their reunions differently, right?
I cringed for Cyndi when she was stuck rooming with the "Summer Girls." Elena and Lissette were the "popular girl" and the "hot girl." Their click was the "summer girls" and they still can't seem to get over themselves. It's so interesting how some people never seem to change out of those earlier stereotypes. They still cling to each other, still feel they are better than everyone else, and have had plastic surgeries trying to keep their looks. They make comments about losing weight, claiming Lori, who had been pretty and popular back in the day, has found it.
Also not seeming to grow up much is John. Not suprsingly, he was known twenty years ago as "the jerk" and "the walking moron." Watching his antics, nothing seems to have changed. He gets tasked with meeting someone from his past, and proves he's just as much of a dick as he was back then. Also getting a chance to meet someone from his past is Joe, "the football star." His high school sweetheart was Jodi, the cheerleader, but they broke up after high school when he couldn't be faithful. All these years later, she seems to be regretting letting him go.
Maybe this could be one of the three proposals we're guaranteed by the end of the season. We're told that we'll be treated to not one, not two, but three marriage proposals, including one wedding. The promotions seem to allude to the proposals possibly being from Antanus, "the ladies man," who is there to prove he can be loyal to his girlfriend back home, and possibly also Rachelle who feels she deserves a chance with Joe.
I can feel my bias based on my own high school experiences in my writing here. I just can't help but root for the nerd girls that disappeared into the background. Chances are the rest of you will feel your bias as well. Are you rooting for the Summer Girls? The Jerk? The Jock and the Cheerleader? It seems to be our inescapable past.
