Last Comic Standing Winner, Jon Reep, Releases New CD

I've always been sad to have seen what happened to Last Comic Standing. It was always a favorite of mine, yet it was destined to fizzle out once Jay Mohr was separated from the show, as quite frankly, he was the show. It was always an hour of guaranteed fun. We get to follow the careers of its graduates, just as we do the American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, or America's Next Top Model grads. Season five winner Jon Reep has a new CD out, and it helps me remember why I always liked the show so much.

As Jon says in one of his bits on the CD, because of his win, he was able to tell people for a whole year that he was the funniest person in the whole world, as it wasn't his fault Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock didn't audition. He wanted more, though, wanting some type of a title belt like they have in wrestling. He thinks they're basically just a torso trophies and plans to design one for himself. It's just a plaque with a buckle you put on your crotch. He's thinking he'll walk into comedy clubs and challenge other comics the way wrestlers do, as he goes shirtless, wearing his tightie whities and long boots.

With his "Metro Jethro" gig that's carried through, Jon's comedy seems like it would be the same as the redneck comedy of Jeff Foxworthy, but it's a little more. It's a little more rounder and full. What makes him a Metro Jethro is he belongs to both. When he's back home in Hickory, North Carolina people say, "Here comes Hollywood," yet when he's in L.A., people say here comes the redneck. But even more than the redneck schtick, he talks about being from a small town. It's that small town comedy that endears him to us and makes him one of our own.

I listened to the Metro Jethro CD as I ran my errands, driving around throughout the day. It put a smile on my face, recognizing the small town life that he represents and the slices of life that he talks about that we all recognize, but wouldn't call out on our own. He doesn't just talk about naked guys in the locker room at the gym; he talks about the five rules of being naked. Naked-iquette. The number one rule is not staying naked for more than five minutes, as everything you need to get done when you're naked doesn't take any longer than five minutes. It only takes three, but he's giving us an extra two.

I moved the content of the CD over to my iPhone, and I'm going to keep it there for those times when I want to smile. It'll be for those times when I remember why I liked watching Last Comic Standing. It was an extra hour of fun in my week. It's a nice memory, and good to see that these graduates have moved on and took the success they gained from the show, something the show wasn't able to do.
