Great American Road Trip Ep. 5 Commentary – Not Going to Their House For Dinner

This week’s installment tries to ratchet up the intra-team conflict. The problem is, there is no real conflict to ratchet. So, they take the only thing they can find – jealousy of the Cootes. That’s all the others have. If not for that focus, all they have is parents yelling at each other or their kids and the high comedy, which is the DiSal Family. When are they going to get to California already!

Here’s the thing with focusing on beating the Cootes – who cares? It’s not like they have been edited as reality villains; if anything they are offensively bland and have one wildly hyperactive child. The tone of this episode can only lead me to one example – Romber. The harping that was made on how the teams are sick of the Cootes winning, and how much they wanted to beat the Cootes, just reminded me of Amazing Race 7 and how Romber just got in the heads of everyone else. I think it is why they did so well – they were a good team, but their competition just kept making bad errors. But every episode was all about beating Romber.

Jen Coote is starting to appear a bit smug in her interviews – and she possesses some earrings, which look like they could double as hula hoops for Shaq. Amy DiSal says Papa Coote has the personality of a flea, of a rock, and stunningly enough, it is one of several times in this episode I find myself agreeing with Amy. I love the little girl, and I refuse to give any attention to the boy. Because that’s what he wants so very desperately.

King of the Road Challenge – The teams had to spin around on a giant vortex – which is a big circle, which team members lie on and get spun around. They must dizzily then bang a gong. Get it on. Bang a gong. Get it on. It is that riveting – children spinning to the point of nausea. Thanks NBC, this is sooooo much better than Journeyman was. Sigh. Shock – the Cootes win and the DiSals are awful.

End of the Road Challenge – Teams have to open safes on opposite ends of the train and must tell their family members the combination in an elaborate relay race memory game. Again, the DiSals actually suck at the King challenge and rock the End challenge. The Montys fail to take advantage of dad’s self-described photographic memory and fall to elimination.

Roadside attractions (divided by families)

DiSals – They are always providing moments to mock. As crazy as they are, I always find myself writing about them. They are interesting and the other three teams are not. Plain and simple. Top DiSal moments this week:

1. Silvio trying to find out what a vortex is – I think he may believe it is a brand of hair gel.

2. Silvio learning how to pump gas. A task often accomplished by people so recently new to our country that Minutemen are still tracking them.

3. Amy disgusted over the Pollards’ tendency to cook squirrel. And the title of this commentary is born.

4. Silvio can’t believe there is such beauty in America as seen in the Grand Canyon. Has he never actually seen pictures? Has he not watched the Brady Bunch episode? If not, then does he know about the existence of Hawaii either?

5. Young Blake identifies his brother’s behavior tick of grabbing his hair whenever Sil does something frustrating. Very observant, and a bit sad. Part of me really identifies with Mason and Blake.

6 . Silvio “doing the hand” in every picture. He says his little gesture is actually the sign for “I love you.” His family? Has had it with the damn thing. Imagine that in every photo you have.

7. DiSalvatores on Three! DiSalvatores!! What happened to three? Amy, you are growing on me.

8. How many of you are great listeners? Sil, put your hand down. Again, Amy, I am willing to forgive your “nails on a chalkboard” voice.

9. Silvio messed up the code, but they still destroyed the Pollards and Montys in the challenge.

10. Amy says after the birth of her children, the Grand Canyon was the most amazing thing in her life. It seems to rank ahead of her wedding day. Of course, we have met Sil…so, it's making more sense.
