America’s Toughest Jobs, Episode 6 Commentary – A Whole Lotta Bull!
Well, I missed a couple of weeks. That’s what happens when you move to another state, have several days of no cable, have to play Daddy Day Care for about a week and then start a rather busy job in our nation’s capital as our economy faces a crisis. Needless to say, recapping NBC reality shows becomes a low priority. My apologies to the dozens of people that have been reading recaps on this show. Due to my schedule, I will have to cease doing long recaps and will only be doing commentary for a while on this show and others. Hopefully by the time Top Chef returns, I’ll be more settled and able to get into more detail.
Anyway, boom, boom, boom, bang, bang, bang, it’s tough job time. We missed gold digging (Phil can’t repeat his stellar truck driving and falls into the freezing river a la Augustus in Willy Wonka), monster trucks (Rick regresses into a small boy and remembers his favorite toy, and fails to drive well) and oil rigs (Crazy Eric is unable to overcome his hatred of the oil industry and fails miserably), but we are back just in time for bull fighting! Here are some thoughts from this week’s foray into “Things I Would Never Do Much Less On TV.”
- We are in San Angelo, Texas for the rodeo and if I recall correctly, that was where Farlow ranch was on Dallas. And I think Sue Ellen’s lover, Dusty Farlow, was a rodeo star. Wow, that was awfully pathetic that I didn’t need IMDB for that.
- Five-time rodeo champ Rob Smeets is training our “labor” force tonight. He has broken his neck three times. If you broke your neck three times in your job, wouldn’t you start posting your resume on Monster.com sooner rather than later?
- I love how, during the first training wave, Ben got leveled in the gut by the wheelbarrow and yet wound up winning the episode by totally kicking butt in the rodeo. Ben finally shows up and does something useful on this show.
- Rie did all of these crazy jobs, and did quite well on a number of them, and manages to be taken down by a wheelbarrow with horns. It’s a shame because of all of the contestants, to me she seemed like the least likely do be doing well. Perhaps that is pretty model prejudice but you don’t usually think of models as being all that rough and tough. I felt badly for her as she clearly didn’t want to go out because of an injury.
- Sandy is entertaining and has been kicking some serious butt so far, but boy, she’s a little crazy, isn’t she? Granted, I got a kick out of her telling Chris that she is praying for his wife and that he “ain’t worth nothing.”
- Speaking of Chris, has there been a more unlikable reality contestant on a show other than Big Brother in recent memory? As the others were having fun with the SWAT team level of equipment that they had to strap on, Chris sat in the corner complaining. “I’m a square in a circle. I’d rather be stuck on an island with 10 gay guys than drive two hours with this chick here (Sandy).” By the way, I am sure that Sandy and the gay guys feel the same way. Also, I think Bravo is developing that series as we speak.
- Steven is totally going to win this competition, isn’t he? He’s going to finish second to last all the way to the end and then win it all. It’s called the Lisa from Top Chef Method of reality show competing. I know, she didn’t win, but she came awfully close.
- I might have a little crush on Michaela. Not a big one, just a little one. She’s no Amanda Kimmel, but seriously, she may be able to kick her ass.
- I felt like Survivor Medical was out after Sandy got nailed by the bull. I started to feel badly for her, but she got a Get out of Jail Free card instead. Seriously, why did she get the free pass and Rie didn’t? Because Sandy rocked the training? She didn’t do the actual task! Somewhere Jonathan Penner is crying foul. And Michael Skupin. Heck, even James Clement and his cut thumb are questioning this. We’ll see how she is able to scale a bridge next week on her crutches.
- It is rare that I enjoy a reality show family visit episode unless it includes fake dead grandmas or uncomfortable pickup truck snuggling. This was no different. The one thing I noticed: Ben’s girlfriend is really good looking. Good for you, Dreads!
- Amazing – Chris didn’t suck in this one. I am a bit stunned. Also, Bryce did well. What is going on?
- Rommell dislocated his shoulder by grabbing a bull’s head. Not your common injury for your average, everyday karate instructor.
- The Bottom Two battle between Steven and Rie was boring. Or so I hope. My crappy new Comcast DVR conked out as it was going on. So instead of reviewing how Steven beat a gimpy Rie, I will just say that Comcast really, really bites. I miss my Direct TV.
Next week: painting bridges. My acrophobia is already kicking in.
