In the Name of Good Sportsmanship? - Sports Kids Moms and Dads, Episode 6 by Kristy Lussier
Sarah is a busy girl. Five events in one day. She’s cute, she dances well. She gets off to a great start, but lurking in the shadows is a disturbed mother, Sharon. Remember Sarah’s rival, Nicollete, the girl from last week? Well, she’s here again too, and her Dad is so excited that he’s videotaping all the girls’ performances. This appears to be the start of a big problem, as Sharon says she feels the other girls will steal moves from Sarah’s routines. Later, Sharon chats with Miss Nicole, Sarah’s coach, about this videotaping crisis and contemplates actually pulling Sarah from the competition to avoid theft of her dance moves. Sharon flat out says it’s cheating, she feels, if the other parents tape everyone. Miss Nicole says pulling Sarah would look really bad on not only her (Sarah), but herself, and her company. Ironically, Nicollete shows up later in the competition wearing a bright pink outfit (much like Sarah’s) for her jazz routine. Last week, she wore something completely different (an orange number, according to Sarah’s brother). Sarah got her revenge on the girl though; because she took home four 1st place trophies. Nicollete placed mostly second.
Karli and Karoline prepare for their Florida trip. This will be Karli’s last time riding her horse, so it’s pretty meaningful. As everyone scrambles about the house getting ready, Karen, their mother, gets more and more flaky and confused. It seems any stress she may be having she spits back on to her kids. She says that it may seem to everyone that she is scatterbrained and always late, but that’s just an illusion. Such an illusion folks, that on the day they leave for Florida, she’s walking around in sandals when there’s like, two feet of snow on the ground; she forgets to write a note to excuse the girls from school while they’re gone so none of their teachers even know they are leaving, and she forgets to pack clothes or anything else for herself. AND she’s running late, again, and they barely make it to the airport thirty minutes before their flight leaves. Karen, you are scatterbrained and always late. Just accept it.
Bryce bites his nails, waiting to see if he qualified to even compete in Junior Nationals. The results get posted on the wall, and only the top nine competitors go on to the next round. Bryce placed 13th. He is very upset, but he says he’s glad he got the experience. I can’t help but wonder if he’s thinking “Is this it?” They arrive back at home, and a week later, Bryce gets back out onto the ice. Surprisingly, he hits every jump he tries, until the music is put on again, and he falls instantly. Kim, his mother, thinks it may be a mental issue, and suggests the possibility of seeing a sports psychologist. Later, a DVD arrives of his actual performance for the qualifying rounds, and Kim watches him skate for the first time. She is very disappointed at his falls on the jumps. She feels like she’s sacrificed a lot for Bryce to skate, and he’s not living up to their expectations of skating. I am going to refrain from saying anything to this comment, but this one thing: A mother should sacrifice anything for their child, no matter what, and never expect anything but the best effort back. Bryce tried, and he loves what he does. That is all Kim deserves.
Lindsay gets a night to go out and have a group date night. They all go bowling, and then out to eat. At the same time, TJ is out with some of her girlfriends at dinner, chatting about teenagers of course. TJ admits that she found some letters from Lindsay’s diary so she read them. Lindsay feels violated at this, but TJ boasts in the fact that she will still control every move Lindsay makes right now. They arrive for a really big game, but Lindsay is sick with a 102 fever. She plays pretty well, but when someone steps in to sub for her, the team begins to fall apart. And apparently, the referees are blind to see that the girls on the other team are fouling by traveling the whole time. TJ gets a technical as a coach for trying to correct them (the ref’s). The Jaguars fight hard, but they end up losing. TJ feels the girls fell apart as a team, and fears for the State Championship.
Craig is making a weird protein/hormone shake for Trenton. He says that Trenton will only do 100% natural stuff to enhance his body, no type of drug allowed. Trenton’s mom makes him a healthy grease filled protein breakfast on game day. She remarks that she wants to maintain his weight level appropriately. Last game before playoffs and Trenton’s coach says to the camera that he wants to go over and get the referee’s on their side for good sportsmanship. Ooookay… Trenton’s team completely crushes the other team by over scoring, but apparently they tried to avoid boasting or celebrating their win so they will get good sportsmanship points. Let me make comments on this later, when Trenton’s team does make it to the playoffs and we’ll see how they do.
Next week: How will Karli do in Florida? Does Trenton’s team even make it to the playoffs?
