Too Busy to Just be a Kid? - Sports Kids Moms and Dads, Episode 2
by Kristy Lussier

This week, we learn that Sarah (the cheerleader) gets pulled out of school very often for practice and dance rehearsals. I have two words to say to that: Absolutely not. After getting pulled out of school, she’s off to dance practice where she and Sharon (her mother) try on different outfits for an upcoming performance she has. Then she sprints to cheerleading practice, where she also (very often) gets pulled out of early to attend a Ballet performance at a local library.

Even her cheerleading coach, Miss Nicole, seems irritated that Sarah is leaving early, and admits that she’s not living up to her full potential. Miss Nicole feels if Sarah wants to be a Champion, she needs to focus solely on that, and not be torn in 6 different directions at once. Sharon needs to step back and take a look at the big picture here. Her daughter is going to get worn out and torn up with all she is doing, and on top of that school is not a priority; that’s an issue for me. Sarah obviously has fun, but it should solely be extra-curricular activities, and not her whole life. Yet again, Sarah gets pulled out of another practice at the end of the episode to perform with a Country Western dance team her mother directs called The Little Wranglers. What a crazy schedule for an 8 year old.

Craig, Trenton’s dad, says he works four to five little jobs (delivering pizza, doing TV commercials, etc.) so he can have time for Trenton’s training schedule. I don’t see how he figures that is better, because IF Trenton was in school during the day, Monday through Friday, then trained after school; it would be easy enough for Dad to be there in the evenings for practice. Craig’s motives have been questionable from Episode One to me. We’ll see how the season goes. Trenton, later, is shown playing a bass, and he says he plays bass in the school band. I was glad to see he was doing something other than football, and even more glad when he mentioned he actually goes to school. Then we see Trenton training with another special Coach who plays Semi-Pro football. In the clip, he gets hurt practicing and is upset. Craig then mentions that they have a special 10 second rule, where Trenton has 10 seconds to gather himself and cry before he gets back on the field. Yep, 10 seconds is plenty of time Dad. Right.

Bryce’s Dad seems like a winner! Way to support your son! He quotes “If Bryce doesn’t fall, he’s done a great job. If Bryce falls, he sucks.” And that was the only thing Dad had to say about Bryce’s skating. Kim, Bryce’s mom, snaps at him later in the episode for him saying he didn’t want to go to the rink early because he had homework to do. Then she just continues to hound him about his skating performance. Bryce admits in his interviews that he wants to keep skating at the rink, and other things at home. His mother, apparently, doesn’t quite get that message.

Karli’s equestrian coach seems like a great woman. She acts as a second mom to Karli, and Karli feels like she can tell her anything. Even Nancy (the coach) asks about her grades and other things in her life besides riding. My heart again, goes out to Karli. After spending two days training for her Florida competition with a world renowned horse trainer, it seems heartbreak is still around the corner. Her mom can’t afford to keep up with all the bills after her divorce, so they are selling her horse, Disco. When Karli hears about this, her whole world seems to crumble.

Lindsay, though having a protective mother, seems to have the most “normal” sport kid life than all of the others on the show. She is shown out with friends, talking about clothes, boys and parties. Although basketball is important to her, she also has a life outside the court. Lindsay’s team has another game, and this time they seem to struggle in it, but pull through in the 4th quarter and win by 3. TJ tells Lindsay later that she can’t go to one of her games and gets TV and music taken away because her grades have started to slip. TJ, even being her coach, puts her daughter’s grades first before basketball, and I think that is great.

Next week, tension builds as the prospect of Karli’s horse being sold really takes it toll, and things get rowdy at one of Trenton’s football games.
