Interview With Coby Archa of Survivor: Palau
by LauraBelle
RS: Hi Coby! Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions - you've got some huge fans at RealityShack. And congratulations on your new baby! What similarities do baby Janu and Survivor Janu have?
Coby: The first thing that comes to mind is their astological sign; they are both Taurus's! Besides that they are both Spanish, Janu is a strong independent woman which is why I named my daughter after her ... little did I know how true that would be. Little Janu has a mind of her own at only 5 weeks, just like big Janu.
RS: Why did you not pick Angie when choosing teams, despite having an early alliance with her?
Coby: I decided not to pick Angie for the fact that we both had targets on our backs, and I was afraid our targets would get bigger if I picked her. So it was strictly strategic and I also had a strong bond with Caryn.
RS: What a victory it was that you had over James, pushing him off the platform. Was there anybody from Ulong you would have rather bested in that challenge?
Coby: Actually I wanted to go up against Iberehem believe it or not! I really wanted to take on the biggest guy there to show people what I was made of; Gregg stepped in and wanted to take him on, so I let him.
RS: What do you think happened with the alliance you formed with Gregg, Jenn and Janu? Was there any further discussion about that between you?
Coby: I think a couple of things happened with that alliance. First being that Janu got sick and Jenn and Gregg didn't feel they could depend on her in the game. Secondly, Gregg just got cold feet and thought the picking off of Tom should have been later in the game; he kept waiting and waiting until it was too late.
RS: Why do you think you were left alone to work the bait while the others went out to learn how to fish from the the native Palauans?
Coby: I was left alone because I was the only one willing to bend to what the Palauans had told us, that bait was just as important as fishing and some needed to stay back to learn it. Tom was just looking out for his boys, and I wasn't one of them.
RS: When you jumped off your stump in the water, Katie said you must either think you're safe or want to go home. Were either of these assumptions true?
Coby: That was one of the smartest things Katie ever said in the game because she was so right on. Janu wanted to go home and I thought I was safe. I remember when Katie said that because that was the first time I thought I might be going home.
RS: At your last tribal council, why did you vote for Janu, the only person you had a solid alliance with?
Coby: I voted for Janu because she asked me to. She really thought it was her going home and didn't want me to cause any waves within the tribe about voting.
RS: Your facial reactions while on the jury were highly entertaining to watch. Was that intentional?
Coby: No, I was always only myself out there; I am just a drama queen all the way around I guess. My reactions at tribal were there because I was a fan in the show of Survivor watching it as it played out ... my wildest dream come true.
RS: Do you think Ian did the right thing making a deal after eleven hours on the buoy?
Coby: I am not here to judge anyone's judgements in such extreme situations, after all I jumped for a million dollar donut. But I can say from the outside looking in, that as a viewer it seemed Ian was played by Tom.
RS: If you had made it to Final Two, who do you think you could have easily beaten? What would you have said in your opening statement?
Coby: I think if I played my cards right I could have beat anyone but Stephenie. I would have played the "Yea I played dirty and I beat you ... show respect and vote for me ... I played hard."
RS: How do you think your defining moment on Palau, realizing you were part of a team and no one making you quit this time, will change the rest of your life?
Coby: Well that moment did 2 things. One being that I put skeletons to rest about IF I could perform with a team or could I push my body to the test ... the answer being ... Yes!!! The second thing I think that did was, lose my fight in the game. Once I got satisfied, I took my eye off the prize.
RS: I have to ask – what did your shirt say at the Final Tribal Council?
Coby: It read "Don't Hate" with a big $ sign in the middle! To show respect that I didn't hate them for winning the money.
RS: Again, congratulations on baby Janu, and thanks for entertaining us this season on Survivor!
