NBC Resurrects Past Chart Toppers with “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Carrie
Once again following on the heels of a hit UK reality show, NBC is bringing us “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, premiering June 2nd at 9pm ET.
This three-week musical nostalgia tour will feature five performers each week, and the live studio audience will then vote for their favourite. Hosted by Vernon Kay (the same veteran presenter who hosted the UK version, pictured at right), the show promises to entertain and allow us to reminisce about the soundtracks of our youths.
Week one boasts A Flock of Seagulls performing “I Ran”, Tiffany performing “I Think We’re Alone Now”, Arrested Development performing “Tennessee”, CeCe Peniston performing “Finally”, and Loverboy performing “Working for the Weekend”. Each performer will also cover a current, popular song as well. Arrested Development will cover “Heaven”, originally performed by Los Lonely Boys, and Loverboy will do “Hero”, originally recorded by Enrique Iglesias.
In addition to the performances, viewers will also be treated to clips of each artist’s history, and updates on what they’ve been up to since hitting the charts.
Though the show is currently only scheduled for a single three-week run, it could easily be expanded and continued throughout the summer. NBC execs have hinted that they will do just that if the quality of the show and the ratings are positive.
NBC promises us upcoming performances by Tommy Tutone, The Motels, The Knack, Wang Chung, Irene Cara, Cameo, and more. And if you watched The Surreal Life 2, you may be surprised to learn that Vanilla Ice is slated to perform as well, undoubtedly doing his hit “Ice, Ice, Baby”.
Though it may be depressing to see how our pop idols have aged, it’s hard to resist a show that will bring them back for one more shot at the spotlight. “Hit Me Baby One More Time” will make those of us who were around when the original recordings came out, feel old and young at the same time.
For band information, schedules, videos, song lyrics and more, visit the official NBC website for “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. And stay tuned right here for recaps of this one- it’s going to be a lot of fun! Now if only I could get the title song out of my head ...
