What's in the Box? – Unan1mous, Episode 4 by Carrie
Last week on Unan1mous, Kelly quit and cut the potential prize pool by half. Richard was brought back into the game to fill the spot that was vacated by Kelly. Jamie made herself ill from the stress. Another vote was called, but once again the participants failed to come to a unanimous decision. Now it's time to find out who they've decided to outcast.
We jump right in this week as Big Cheese announces that Adam is the one who has been outcast. Adam is shocked. I am not. They keep giving away all of this in the scenes for the upcoming shows! Tarah admits that she, Jameson, and Vanessa all conspired to vote for Adam since he's a strong player, and Steve says that he voted for Adam because he's a poker player and has strong reading skills. I'm assuming he means people-reading rather than actual literacy.
For some reason the editing team decided not to flash back to Steve promising that he would be standing in the final three with Jonathan and Adam. Just last week we saw them all swear to watch each others' backs. Seems Steve isn't as open and honest as he'd like everyone to think.
Adam, however, has a good attitude about all of this. He says that he's going to keep thinking and playing until he finds a way back into the game. He wanted a challenge, and now he's been handed one.
Big Cheese says that another person wants to leave. He asks for the clock to be stopped at $720,034. Jamie begins to cry and says that she really wanted to stay, but ... she's not going to. She tells everyone to be true to themselves in the game.
Just as I'm thinking that $350,000 is really not a lot of cash to be playing for at this point, Big Cheese tells them all that, since Jamie is leaving for medical reasons, the pot will remain where it is. Interesting. The money clock once again starts ticking away the cash as Jamie leaves the bunker. Apparently they don't need to replace people if they leave for medical reasons either, because Adam isn't brought back into the game and no one new joins them.
Steve is upset because Jamie was his last hope for an ally who would vote for someone she felt deserved the money rather than basing their decision on alliances or ulterior motives.
Fembot announces that it mealtime, as a bunch of trays filled with mystery food come out on a conveyor belt in what I presume must be the kitchen. Adam has become a loner, staying away from the others in true outcast fashion. He picks up his tray and wanders off to eat by himself. The rest of the group doesn't understand why Adam has become antisocial all of a sudden. Hey fembot, I think you should tell the participants that it's time for a beating with the clue stick.
Vanessa calls out to Adam and asks him to join the group. Adam explains that he's now an outcast, no longer part of the 'tribe', but Vanessa says that if she were in his position she'd still want to be part of the group, because he has a "very important decision to make". Adam just wants to hang back and listen, but I guess this makes the others nervous. Vanessa tells him that his actions are 'extreme', but Adam say no, they're just not what she wants. Watch out Vanessa, the soccer mom attitude won't work on this guy.
Steve and Adam converse privately, and Adam says that he knows who screwed up the almost-unanimous vote a couple of episodes ago. Steve guesses Kelly or Vanessa, and Adam says that it wasn't Kelly. He adds that he can't tell Steve how he knows this, or he will risk being penalized more than he already has been. Heehee – Adam's a tricky little bugger. I love it.
Meanwhile, Tarah and Jameson are strategizing as well. They decide that Steve and Jonathan are tight, and that they need to take out Steve since he's the biggest threat for the money. Both Tarah and Jameson say in confessionals that they've promised the other to stick together, and both plan to honour their promises.
In yet another room, Jonathan is working on Richard. Where's Vanessa while all of this is going on? Jonathan is telling Richard that it was Vanessa who messed up the unanimous vote for Steve, and that she's "evil". Privately Jonathan calls Richard his pawn, and plans to use him throughout the course of the game.
Steve, Jameson, and Tarah are now scheming together. Gah – how many alliances are going on here? They're also planning to use Richard to their advantage. This is interesting to me; if everyone wants Richard's vote, then Richard is probably the safest person there. Could he potentially be the winner?
Jameson, Tarah, and Steve all shake hands and Steve asks if anyone there is playing him. Tarah says that she sure hopes not. Jameson is looking forward to Steve's elimination, especially because he won't know what hit him.
Fembot announces sleep time, and the camera zooms to the outside world. Night turns into day with the help of creative camera work, and we zoom back into the bunker where fembot tells everyone to get out of bed. There's a little montage that shows how bored and stir crazy everyone is getting, since they really have nothing to do except scheme and plot and figure out how to convince everyone else to vote for them.
Big Cheese summons the group back to the Inner Circle, where the money clock sits at $642, 976. The clock is stopped and it's time for another vote. Nothing fancy this time – no new group leader, no one sent to the isolation room. Just a straight-up vote. The balls appear in the centre of the table, and one by one everyone votes.
When the balls arrive in front of Big Cheese, he begins to read them out loud. The first vote is for Richard. The second vote is ... also for Richard. A confessional from Steve announces that there is no way in hell that Richard will ever win the money. Now, normal reality TV editing would dictate that this would be the final vote and Richard would walk away with the remaining cash, but this isn't exactly "normal". The third vote is read, and it goes to Steve.
Big Cheese reminds us that Richard could have voted for Steve, so the decision could still be unanimous. The fourth vote is for ... Vanessa. So once again, the vote is not unanimous. Go figure. The rest of the votes are for Jameson, Jonathan, and Tarah.
The clock is restarted, and Big Cheese announces that it's now time to eliminate someone. Things will work the same way as last time. Each participant will go to the isolation room and record their vote. Hmm, it's like deja vu here – things are working awfully similar to last week.
But wait! Up from the table there appears a locked box. We're told that the person who is outcast this time will get the contents of the box. This could get interesting, folks!
It's time to vote again. Adam and Jonathan both vote for Vanessa, Tarah votes for Steve, and Vanessa, who appears to be completely out of the loop, votes for Jonathan because he's "just a kid" and would squander the money away.
I'm ready to fast forward the commercials to get to the scenes from next week's show, but Big Cheese comes back and announces that the majority of the contestants have chosen Steve as the outcast. Wow, results. What a concept.
Steve, as you can imagine, is stunned. Privately he says that he feels that he was used and now feels completely betrayed. Well, yeah. That's probably how Adam felt earlier.
Big Cheese tells Steve to go fetch the box, which he does. Then he gets the combination to open it from Big Cheese, and he opens the box to find ... okay, so now I get to fast forward to the upcoming scenes, 'cause this week's show is done. You didn't think they'd give us the results of the vote AND the contents of the box now, did you?
Coming up on Unan1mous: The contents of the box turn the bunker upside down. Hmm, what could it be? Tarah's live ammo? Steve tries to seek revenge on whoever helped to outcast him. Videos from friends and family arrive, but they do little to make the participants seem human to each other.
So ... what's in the box? Drop me a line at carrie@realityshack.com and we'll toss around some ideas.
