Ready to Rumble - Real World Key West, Episode 3
by Clicker
This week the focus is off bulimia and back to a real Real World staple: bickering.
The show opens with minor friction between Tyler and Svetlana. He does speak to her rather condescendingly, and so far, – thanks to MTV editing – viewers have yet to figure out why he's being so hard on her.
A knock at the door of the house brings some news. It's time to find out what their job will be for the next 4 months. They are told to meet the next day at an art gallery location.
First, the gang decides to go on a Ghost Tour around Key West . This is Janelle's idea. It's raining and they are all bundled in their rain slickers and looking frightened as the tour guide leads them to various spots and tells them ghost stories. (I couldn't figure out how this didn't end up on the editing floor, but all was revealed later in the episode) .
Later they grab a bite with the tour guide who tells them a story about a doll named Robby that causes havoc all over the island. Tyler seems to be the most weirded out by the story and so are some of the girls. They don't even want anyone to say the name "Robby " anymore.
When they get home Jose, John and Zach decide it would be a good idea to wrap Jose in toilet paper and call him "Robby" and then sneak into the girls' room while they're sleeping and scare them. So they set their clocks for 4:15 a.m. and get to work wrapping Jose.
The lost sleep wasn't worth it. The girls barely flinch. But the guys got a good laugh. (See, that's why they had to keep the ghost story footage!)
The next day they head to the art gallery where they are supposed to hear what their "job" will be. When they get to Pineapple Gallery, Svetlana starts sulking because she just KNOWS they are going to have to sell art and tells the camera: "I don't get art, I'm thinking it's going to be very hard for me to sell something I don't like, so I'm not happy about it at all."
Tyler sees her sulking on the side while everyone else is exploring the gallery and starts to lay into her: "What can you possibly be pouting about right now? We have this beautiful open space and you're being an ornery little brat right now. Just cut it out and be happy."
Right about then a guy named Ricky enters and tells them he is going to be their business partner. But first he asks if anyone has started a business before. Svetlana raises her hand and says she started a pharmacy and 3-D imaging center. Tyler blurts out "her parents" started it.
Then the business venture is unveiled. They'll be selling "Mystic Tans." Ricky is the co-inventor of an automated sprayer system for sunless tans. It will be a 50/50 profit split on the $30 tans. The roomies will create the business inside the art gallery and Ricky will provide all the equipment and product. They are expected to open in 14 days. And there is a lot of work to do including painting and electrical work.
Over a meal, the roomies each share their business strengths and start to set the ground rules on how they will work together. Janelle says she can sell. Paula says she has a marketing and graphic arts degrees. Tyler also has a sales background.
Zach brings up one important thought that "when we are at our workplace that we can be colleagues and understand that is a role that somebody has to play. When we go home… then we can leave all that behind." Yeah right.
Back at home the gang is hanging out at the house and Tyler starts some drama. He suggests that they figure out who works best with each other so they can maximize productivity. Then tells Svetlana the he doesn't want to work with her because "you'll get on my nerves and I'll get on your nerves. I'm just being honest."
Instead of just leaving it alone, he comes at her again later while they are getting ready to go out. "You have to understand," Tyler tells Svetlana. " I don't dislike you. I dislike the bullshit that comes out of your mouth on a constant, constant," basis.
She tries to argue with him and ask him why he has to vocalize this every 5 minutes. To which he replies, "I'm the only one who will tell you to your face."
This comment seems to shock Svetlana. And I'm shocked when Janelle pops her head into the room and says she does feel the same way as Tyler, but her way to deal with it is to just avoid Svetlana altogether.
Tyler tells the camera that he is just administering the kind of tough love his parents gave him. (maybe he could use a little more.)
The encounter sends Svetlana running into a closet in tears as the other roommates try to comfort her.
The next day the group goes back to the Pineapple Gallery to start painting. All goes very smoothly as they paint the walls Tyler's "signature baby blue."
Maybe it was the "signature color" or maybe it was the paint fumes, but in the midst of the job Svetlana and Tyler decide to make up. And it's Svetlana who admits that her personality has been a little extreme because she's under stress.
But when Rick asks for 2 volunteers to keep the companies finances and Tyler and Svetlana both raise their hands, the group says "No Way!" Maybe they don't believe in the truce. They choose Svetlana and Jose to handle the books.
The episode ends with Svetlana walking in on Tyler who is in a giant bubble bath. They start playing around throwing bubbles at each other. And eventually he manages to pull Svetlana (who is fully clothed) into the bathtub. She springs out yelling, "I feel your junk!"
