Starting Over 3, 02-15-06 – It's A Wrap!by LauraBelle
Kelly doesn't start her day off to well in the Starting Over house. She receives a basket with a huge scroll. Printed on the scroll is the phrase Kelly has been trying to forget all her life, "You are trying to seduce your father." She is instructed to spend the day writing the feelings that phrase brings up onto the scroll. Meanwhile, Jill is beside herself that she hasn't been able to get ahold of Lisa1 since she left the house. It's been four days, and no one has heard from her. Jill has tried both calling and emailing to no avail.
Dr. Stan is at the Starting Over house yet again. Iyanla hasn't been seen in a few days, so I'm wondering if he is filling in for her while she was away for some reason. He first meets with Jill to discuss sending the videotape to her father. She is worried about not having heard from him, but concedes there are things she could do on her end such as tracking the package to be sure it was delivered. Dr. Stan also talks to Jill about finding employment. She tells him she has been fired from three separate jobs in the past. Hoping to allay some of her fears, Dr. Stan is bringing in Susan from Fierce Conversations. Her company helps prepare people for their difficult conversations they have with potential employers. After this, Jill will meet with a headhunter in the entertainment business.
Change is on the menu again today in Group with Dr. Stan. He talks to the women about the most significant changes they have made. Christie names her divorce, and Jodi names her parents' divorce, thinking it's the one thing that has affected her whole life. Kim and Kelly both agree that having children was their biggest change. When Kelly starts talking about the fears she had with her children that they may not love her, Dr. Stan wants to know why. Kelly says she has never felt loved before.
In an odd comment, Kelly goes off subject, and says she told Kim it was okay for her to be bugged by her son. She can't understand why Kim won't just admit it. Kim doesn't appreciate Kelly bringing her into this and says this isn't exactly what was said or talked about. Although she has to concede she and Kelly do share the fear that their sons won't love them. Kelly gets upset thinking she's being called out on something, and Dr. Stan has to tell the two to take a breather.
Jodi stands up for Kim, which I have to admit is kind of nice to see. She says that Kelly's statement had been a blanket statement. Kelly makes these generalizations often to validate what she is feeling. Dr. Stan believes Kelly has a difficult time talking about herself, so this is why she throws it all on other people. Kelly agrees there is probably a lot of truth to that. Dr. Stan offers the suggestion that Kelly should begin offering her opinions as just that ... opinions. Before he adjourns Group, Dr. Stan tells everyone they'll be meeting with Andy Paige again today to work on those little changes. Yesterday it was changing bras, what will it be today?
We just can't get enough of Dr. Stan today. He now meets up with Jodi to discuss her philosophy of working out and weight loss. Jodi says she used to work out a lot, but abruptly stopped. When pressed to explain, Jodi says she used to be very in shape, and had a couple of guys she was seeing. She then went to Europe on vacation, and hooked up with another guy. She became pregnant, and didn't know who the father of the baby was. She aborted the pregnancy and started gaining weight to draw men's attention away from her. Dr. Stan would like Jodi to stop associating exercise and being with men. He is sending her to a woman's gym today to work with a personal trainer.
Jill tries calling her old buddy, graduate TJ, to see whether she has heard from Lisa1. She hasn't, and agrees with Jill that it's quite odd. Jill shares her feelings with her other housemates, and they wonder if they should mention this to Rhonda or not, as they are somewhat worried. Jill says if Lisa1 decided on the flight home, to heck with all this, then it was a big waste of many people's time.
Jodi shows up for her workout at Curves. With this workout you switch equipment, and/or routine, every thirty seconds for a thirty-minute workout. Jodi is now starting to remember why she used to enjoy workout out.
After her workout, all the housemates meet up with Andy Paige at "It's A Wrap." This is a store that sells old clothing and accessories that have been used in television shows and movies. Andy asks the women to pick out just one thing to give themselves another change. Jill ends up with an attractive scarf. Christie, of course, picks out a jacket. The most interesting part of all this, though, is the car ride to the store and back home. Kelly insists on driving, angering Jodi. Jodi is upset that Kelly doesn't keep her eyes on the road while driving. It's kind of funny that it happens when they are driving to meet up with Andy Paige, as she had a similar concern in season one with Nyanza's driving.
Safely back at home, Jill has her meeting with Susan from Fierce Conversations. She shows Jill how to talk about her experience being fired three times without it sounding negative in interviews.
Dr. Stan meets one-on-one with Kelly for the first time, and she's crying right out of the box. She blames it on not getting along with her housemates. Umm, if not getting along with people you have known for just a few days is causing this, there are bigger problems than that. Kelly goes on to explain why she chose to come to Starting Over, telling Dr. Stan about those words the therapist said to her so long ago.
Kelly has fears of others thinking she is a monster, but realizes she is not. Dr. Stan wonders if she feels the monster needs to be caged, and that's why she isn't able to be open physically. Kelly shows Dr. Stan the words she has written on her scroll. Dr. Stan tells Kelly "seduce" doesn't have to mean sexually. It can mean as a young girl she was doing what she could to get her own way from her father. Kelly thinks it all sounds kind of silly now. Dr. Stan tells her he wouldn't say that; he would say it was sad.
Jill has her meeting with the headhunter, Brad Marks. She shares with him her dream of moving on to having a television show, yet still having some type of radio component. He sees that she is quite qualified, but wonders what she has been doing all these years being out of radio. Jill explains she ran a boutique for awhile, but that it didn't do very well. Brad brings up satellite radio, and Jill admits that thought holds a lot of promise. He thinks she can be successful in radio again, and suggests to Jill that she should make a demo.
Jodi tries to talk to Kelly about what happened while driving to and from It's A Wrap. Kelly gets a little defensive, and even angry about it all, and Jodi says she seems a little over-aggressive. She's starting to feel like there is two Kelly's, and thinks they have only scratched the surface of what is really there.
A sushi expert arrives to show the women how to make sushi as part of one of Jodi's exercises. Jill's happy because she loves it just as much as cupcakes, and can actually eat sushi. Jodi likes the camaraderie of all the women sitting around making it together.
It seems like the show is trying to get this new group of women to bond cohesively, just like the last bunch eventually did. The bra shopping, specialized clothing shopping, sushi making, etc., it's all some greater plan other than just "making a change" and "stepping out of a comfort zone." Nothing says I'm bonding with my girlfriend, more than shopping for bras and having a cooking party.
