Rat Tail Mullet Man - Canadian Idol 3, 9/7/05
by Andrea Cranfield

Tonight was the second last results show for Canadian Idol this season. The show opened with the Idols singing a medley of Barenaked Ladies songs. There were over one million votes for each competitor that poured in the previous night after the Idols had performed. Kristopher Turner and Tim Rozon from Instant Star were in the audience, as well as Ian Sirota from Comics Inc.

There were some clips of Jacob Hogart who was a Canadian Idol finalist last year performing some of the songs that he had sang on the show. He is now in a band called Hedley who were there tonight to perform the number one selling single from their debut album. Jacob had a hmmm … I suppose you could say a really short half rats tail half mullet going on with a lot of eye makeup - but I’m not sure the eye makeup was on purpose, and he still had the lip ring that he had last year.

During the performance he was freaking out, and dancing and shaking and yelling, and Hedley got a standing ovation except for the judges who looked a little shocked. The self-titled album Hedley came out yesterday. Ben asked Jacob what it was like to record an album and he said, “It was amazing. We got to work with Garth Richardson and Mike Frazier and so many awesome people. It’s a privilege to be this far." Ben said “Thank you for mentioning me in the liner notes, no one has ever done that before, that was very sweet” and Jacob then kissed Ben on the cheek. As they went to commercial Jacob lifted up his shirt and there was something written on his chest but I could not make out what it said.

Ben read the judges' comments from last night for all three Idols and then asked Jake if there was anything he wanted to say to Rex while the top three were still in tact. Jake replied, “I think Rex what you have to think about is earlier in the season you did this little bit about you got your mechanics license. I think you should forget about all of that. Look at what Jacob just did with his band; he came in third last year. If you get kicked off today or the next time, follow your music.”

Ben asked Zack if he had anything to say to Aaron. Zack said “I have lots to say to Aaron, but to cut it really quick the way you took the criticism early on and really grew as a singer, and I hope you really appreciated where you had to get and you did get there. You gave two of the best performances that anybody has ever given on this show. I never bought into the rocker working class guy, but dude you can sing. The work you did was unbelievable.”

Ben asked Sass if there was anything she wanted to say to Melissa and Sass said “Yes, I would like to say Melissa it’s been an absolute joy and a pleasure watching you grow and do so unbelievably well week after week on this show so far and that you’ve blossomed into this amazing little performer. I think you have a real career ahead of you no matter what. If you want to do it, you’ll do it.”

Ben asked Farley what he was expecting to see and hear next week besides a great finale, and Farley replied “Next week’s show is going to be all things for all people. I’m going to put it in order here. The public’s going to hear the single that they’re going to be able to purchase, which is a wonderful thing. The kids get to choose their own song, and most importantly they get to sing the judges choice song.”

After the commercial Ben announces that the next competitor to be eliminated from the competition is Aaron Walpole, who then got big hugs from Rex and Melissa. Aaron had tears in his eyes as Ben told him what a great singer and person he was. A video was shown of his Canadian Idol journey in which he said “I know this is just the beginning, so keep an eye out there for my CD’s.” Ben said, “Next week is a spectacular week, performances by the top two, as well as Theresa Sokyrka, Kalan Porter, and the Barenaked Ladies." Then Aaron sang us out if the show.
