“Too Wild and Weird for Tommy!”- The Cut, Episode 11 By: Chloe It seems that Tommy Hilfiger has done some pretty wild and crazy things in order to get his clothing stores off the ground, and he expects the same from his fledgling designer wannabe’s. The remaining six split off into three teams of two – boy, girl, boy girl, boy, girl. Felix and Elizabeth pair off, while Deanna and Wes bond together. That leaves Princess and Chris C as the final team. Each team is given one male and one female mannequin to dress in reconstructed or redesigned clothing. To obtain the clothing; they will be required to visit five different areas of New York City; the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan, and buy the clothing off the backs of people they see on the streets. They only have $200, cannot buy from a store and have to carry these arctic-white skinned, human sized dolls, which weigh about 70 pounds, as they wander the streets. Once they have the clothing they will return to home base loft in Soho, and redesign the clothing into something wonderful that will sell all over America. If Tommy doesn’t like the clothing the team has created, both members of the team will be axed. Already, I’m worried about Deanna, whose daily attire usually contains fur or some ill-fitting piece of punk clothing. Being a boutique manager and stylist from Melrose Avenue in L.A., I’m uncertain whether she truly has the core of America in mind when she is designing. With only 24 hours to complete their task, Wes and Deanna decide to go back to the loft to rest and get something to eat. They’re feeling pretty smug about their chances of winning this one and completely trash the team of Elizabeth and Felix in their side interview. Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Felix are arguing over how to dress the mannequins. Elizabeth would like to go with elegant chic, while Felix is more down home and streetwise in his approach. Chris C and Princess fear for their life in the Bronx, as they travel the street looking for donations of clothing. Hoping to have better luck if they offer pieces of their own clothing, they have brought items for bartering, since they figure no one wants to give up the warmth of their coat or pants in the middle of winter. As the day wears on, the mannequins of all the teams have acquired a piece of clothing here, a piece of clothing there. The teams are getting tired and Princess completely balks when she discovers they have to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge with their mannequin in order to get into Manhattan. Chris C convinces her to go on, so they trudge across and though she is exhausted and feels a little ill, Princess is proud of herself for making it to the finish. The other teams refused to carry their mannequins, so they found discarded carts or used their rolling luggage to haul the frozen dummies around. The clothing has been collected, so the teams return to the loft to create their unique, All–American look. In Style Forum, Tommy questions Wes and Deanna about their clothing. Again, the odd, punk style of Deanna shines through. Tommy is not pleased and thinks the skirt she made is ridiculous and Middle America would not wear it or be able to walk in it. That plus the fact that the female dummy did not have shoes put them immediately at risk of “taking the runway”. Tommy was not too impressed with Elizabeth or Felix either, as their look was nothing new and the pants on the female fit awkwardly. Chris C and Princess feel their designs work since it was fresh, but not weird like Deanna and Wes. Tommy agreed and felt it was well within the scope of anyone in America to be able to wear the outfits. Into the pit goes, Deanna, Wes, Felix and Elizabeth. Tommy does not think either of the outfits has any wear-ability and that they are too far over the norm. He feels Elizabeth was too fashionable and brought Felix down. Deanna and Wes’ were too far off the mark, but she argued that they should stay if he wanted someone to go outside the box in creativity. Tommy told Deanna that she previously had been instructed to stop designing for funky Melrose and get with the regular stream of fashion. She argued that they designed with core America in mind, but retained some of who they really are as a designer. Tommy tells Felix and Elizabeth that they were out of…sync with the fashion world. As Elizabeth and Felix recover from fright, Tommy goes on to say that Wes and Deanna are out of style and they are to take the runway. In his last interview, Wes felt he had “pushed the envelop” with his designs and was comfortable with the results. Deanna said, “If Tommy knew what was good for him, he would have picked me.” She then goes on to say she would like to see Tommy with a Mohawk and walking arm in arm with her down Melrose. Hmmm, a little bit of a crush? It amazes me how arrogant the losers are in their exit interviews. The comments they make about Tommy are completely disrespectful of the fact that he has made millions with his ideas and they have not made squat! What do you think? chloe@realityshack.com |
