Interview with Josh Nachlas of Average Joe: The Joes Strike Back
by Hildee Weiss
Josh, you were considered to be a fan favorite. What have you been up to?
I was a fan favorite. Really?! I didn’t get any feedback from anybody about that. You play this character on reality television. I played the really nice guy who wound up getting hurt. I’m still single.
What made you try out for Average Joe 4?
I had never seen the show. I wasn’t working at the time. I saw an ad and thought it was to try out for a commercial. I had always wanted to act and I had always wanted to be in front of the camera. I went to the interview in New York, where they had me take off my shirt … I didn’t think about it. They called it “Change Your Life.” When they flew me out to California, they told me it was for Average Joe 4. I had never seen it before but my sister warned me I’d be chastised forever.
What do you look for in a potential mate?
I look for a good-hearted, genuine woman. This experience hasn’t changed what I am looking for. I want someone who’s outgoing and funny. I want to make sure that she’s my best friend and we can never get sick of being together. You can’t have a relationship without that foundation of being best friends and soul mates.
What was your first impression of Anna?
My first impression was obviously aesthetic. She is very striking. She had a really warm smile. I’m really good about reading people. You get a certain vibe. She definitely had this aura of sincerity. She is just a really nice girl. When I started speaking with her, it really backed me up in realizing that she is a sweet person with a genuine personality. I still feel that if I was able to pursue a relationship with her, I’d have to do it off-camera. We had a good connection and we are similar in a lot of ways.
How did you get along with the other Joes and the jocks?
I got along well with everybody. I’m non-confrontational. I supported everyone’s ideas. I played the role of the arbitrator. I usually don’t have a problem with anybody but if I do, I handle it in a logical way. I never had a problem with a roommate.
What are some of your favorite memories from your time on the show?
I loved the Sloppy Joe competition. I haven’t had one since I was a kid so I was excited about that. It’s not often that I make a Manwich for myself! I only ate three and a half during the contest.
Tahiti was really nice. I didn’t get to see a lot of it though. Tahiti was beautiful. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
I really enjoyed the first date with Anna on the yacht. We talked about appreciating life. It’s hard because five cameras are in front of you while you’re being sincere. I was glad that her feelings were reciprocated.
The roller derby was my favorite. I knocked Brad the hunk off in the end. I couldn’t even stand up at first but something happened within me … I was feeling pretty good. That was one of my favorite moments but of course, they didn’t show it!
The dodge ball game was embarrassing. I hate it when things are thrown at me at 30 miles an hour. I never enjoyed that!
Do you have any regrets about your experience on Average Joe 4?
I think the only regret I may have was the last date with Anna. I was exhausted. I wasn’t acting as much as myself as I normally would have. I had some embarrassing moments. I felt as if it was the last chance I had to show Anna who I really was. I just got into this competitive mode. I don’t normally come on that strong. I’m very in touch with my emotions.
Why did you give Nathan’s letter to Anna on your one on one date?
I’m a loyal friend. A bunch of the guys made a pact that we’d give Nathan’s letter if one of us got a one on one date with Anna. I always put friends first. Being a loyal friend and since I got the date, I took some time out to give it to her.
Where are you now, professionally and personally?
Professionally, I’m living in New York and applying to medical schools. Since I won’t be going for a year, I’m interviewing with pharmaceutical companies to be a representative. I moonlight for MTV as a production assistant. Personally, I am available. I’m looking for that special lady.
Was your heart broken?
My heart was not broken but I was upset that I didn’t get to know her better.
Who do you still keep in touch with from the show?
I keep in touch with Arthur, Jason (the Joe), Nathan, Aaron and Josh Abston (the hunk). I saw him in Vegas a couple of times.
Josh, it has indeed been a pleasure speaking with you.
