The Amazing Race, Oct. 14 – So Hot, Could Fry an Egg on My Head

It was kind of a surprise to see Amy and Daniel eliminated last week on The Amazing Race. And for it to come because of a bad taxi driver is always hard to see. They were supposed to be major contenders and were doing so well. It's just a part of the Race, though, and what they need to expect.

The first team to leave Indonesia tonight are the sisters, Natalie and Nadiya, at 6:07 AM. Their clue tells them to make their way to Antika Jaya Padang Restaurant to pick up their next clue. They are also warned of a Double U-Turn ahead. If I were racing, I'd be very worried every time I saw “restaurant.” Last time they had to eat Fallopian Tubes. The sisters are very excited to be leaving first and that they have the Express Pass. They only plan to use it to get first place or avoid elimination. They ask locals for directions to the restaurant.

Trey and Lexi are the next to depart at 6:12 AM. They are continuing their alliance with the sisters, even though they know they see them as “the biggest hillbillies.” Lexi thinks in the long run that it will pay off for them. One of the sisters suggests they go to the restaurant with “the stupid Chippendales.”

Jaymes and James just happen to be next, leaving four minutes later. They say they live in Vegas, but don't want anyone to let that fool them, as they're really a Virginia boy and Maine boy. They guarantee they're good people. They catch up to the other two teams and search together for the restaurant. James thinks it's good to align with other teams, especially in the beginning, as it keeps you from being eliminated too early.

Abbie and Ryan leave at 6:19 AM. He says it's hard to race as a couple, as sometimes they are competitive with each other. It's just their nature because of her dance and his jujitsu. The pressure is increased even more for them because of the $2 million on the line for them after winning the first leg. He squeezes her head, and she does a really weird “heeheehee” thing. They meet up with the other teams as they all search together. Trey and Lexi are the first to find out where it is and the others follow suit.

The next team to leave at 6:26 AM are Josh and Brent. Josh thinks the teams are starting to divide into two groups, the alphas and the others. The alphas are all really focused on winning, and the others are just focused on doing their best, knowing they'll win if they do their best. More often than not it's great people who end up winning, and they believe they are great people.

James and Abba leave at 6:34 AM. Ababa says they are just doing their own thing and being different. If anyone thought they were just long-haired guys who aren't smart and are slow and out of shape, once they got a chance to run, they got a chance to see something different, and it might have surprised everybody.

Trey and Lexi are the first to find the restaurant and it's a Roadblock. Uh-oh. One person from each team will have to serve up twenty plates of food all at once Padang style. They must carry all plates in their arms, and if anything drops, they have to start over. Lexi does the Roadblock and oddly decides to try it with her backpack still on.

The other teams start to arrive at the restaurant, with Brent, Ryan, and Jaymes opting to do the Roadblock. Lexi is complaining that it's pinching her thumbs. The sisters haven't made it there yet and seem to have caught the bad cab driver curse. They get out of the cab and try to find another to start over.

Caitlin and Brittany leave at 7:08 AM and say they have never been a part of something as big as the Race. Caitlin says they're going to have emotions come out that they've never had before, but you'll see her get really angry before you see her cry. Brittany says she can get punched in the face and still not cry. “There's no crying in baseball.”

Jaymes and Lexi are struggling with the dishes. Lexi finally gets an armload, and just when she starts to deliver them, they all fall. Ryan gets his dishes to the table, and Jaymes says his first job was working at a pancake house, and when he got to Vegas, he was serving drinks, so he knows how to do this. He gets to the table promising he's not going to spill it. Ryan gets his delivered, as Lexi gives it another stab, and Brent drops his dishes. Jaymes gets his delivered as well.

James2 and Abbie and Ryan get their next clue telling them to make their way to Surabaya Gubeng Train Station where they'll take the train to another town. While on the train they need to keep their eyes open for the next clue.

James and Abba land at the restaurant with Abba agreeing to do the Roadblock. Lexi gets her dishes delivered finally, as does Brent. Both of these teams take off for the train station. Abba gets his plates delivered and they take off as well.

The sisters arrive finally at the pit stop with one of them doing the challenge. I'm not sure which one, but it's the one who was told “Get the clue, Dummy!” by the other one. So Dummy is doing this challenge, I guess.

Rob and Kelley are finally leaving the pit stop at 7:22 AM. The other teams are starting to arrive at the train station, and those who are arriving early are getting tickets on the 7:36 AM train. Looks like many teams will forced to take later trains.

Caitlin and Brittany arrive at the restaurant, and Brittany offers to do the Roadblock. Dummy is attempting to deliver her twenty plates and drops a plate, having to start over.

Project Runway 10, Episode 13: Time Crunches and Stylistic Concerns

Last week on Project Runway, the designers had to design an avant-garde look inspired both by Oheka Castle and L’Oreal Paris’ latest make-up line.  Dmitry won and Sonjia was sent home– after being robbed of  her spot in the Final Four.  Given that the judges had made a point of examining previous challenges, you’d think that the designer who’d won three challenges would have been a shoo-in.

On the runway, Heidi and Tim explain the rules of their final challenge.  The designers each have to make a collection of ten looks.  Each designer will get five weeks and a budget of $9,000.  That means we’ll get a bunch of rush jobs, as the designers will have to crank out roughly two looks per week.  That won’t allow them time to experiment or try anything new.  Instead, they’ll stick to what they know they can do in the allotted time.  Back when Bravo ran this show, the designers used to get several months to make their collection.

In addition, the designers are not guaranteed a spot, as only three of them will actually show at Fashion Week.  Let’s ignore the fact that one of the worst-kept secrets ever is Project Runway’s use of dummy collections during Fashion Week.  Sonjia and some of the other defeated designers will also be showing collections, since Fashion Week was actually held in September.  Melissa tells us she’s determined to get a spot.

Four weeks later, Tim makes the first of his home visits.  He starts with Christopher, at the latter’s house in Massapequa, NY.  Christopher shows off his workplace and outfits.  He also shows Tim a textile he’d made inspired by his mother’s X-ray.  She’s hurt her back in a car accident, and Christopher used a copy of the X-ray in his textile.  Tim then examines the clothes themselves.  He likes a coat, but thinks the leather bustier with the sweetheart neckline is “too sweet.”  Christopher then shows a pair of leather shorts he’d ruined by pouring bleach on them.  Tim admires the “corroded” look and thinks he should incorporate it in his collection.

Tim then meets Christopher’s family.  He  has two sisters, and everybody seems very supportive of Christopher.  His mother say she’s proud of him.

Fabio is next.  He and his lover, Jason, are staying a in friend’s swanky apartment.  Tim also meets Fabio’s mother.  Fabio, who was born in Brazil, would love the money and the career boost that winning Project Runway would give him.

Fabio then shows off his collection, which he’s calling “Cosmic Tribalism.”  He’d dyed his fabrics with watercolors, creating a pastel effect.  So far, he’s got pale pink and baby blue fabrics.   He calls one look the “Priestess” and two others “people within the tribe.”  Tim likes most of it, but thinks one pair of pants resembles long johns.  He’s baffled by other components of the collection, and he especially dislikes the shoes Fabio plans on using, as they look too clunky and boot-like to go with the airy-looking clothing.

In Jersey City, NJ, Tim catches up with Dmitry, who is also staying at a friend’s.  Dmitry had had to quit his job to go on Project Runway, which meant he’d also had to give up his apartment, since he couldn’t pay for it anymore.   His family are all back in Belarus, and he’d emigrated to the U.S. when he was 18. His collection is inspired by what he calls “organic architecture.”  As one might guess, his clothes look very geometric.  Tim admires a coat, but dislikes a pale green dress.  Tim asks him if there are any “surprises” in the collection.  Dmitry needs to show the judges something new, and not designs they’ve seen before.

Last up is Melissa, who has her own place in San Francisco.  She shows off her collection, which includes a “cracked” leather jacket.  Tim likes her collection and sees nothing to complain about.  He does tell Melissa it will come down to the judges’ taste.  Afterwards, Melissa’s parents take Tim, Melissa, and Mick, who is Melissa’s boyfriend, on a boat ride.  Melissa and her family talk about Rogers City, the small town where Melissa grew up.

A few days before Fashion Week, the designers return to New York City.  Christopher is the first to arrive, and promptly checks out the apartments.  He and the other three designers are happy to see each other again and seem to like their new digs a lot.  They like them even more when they find champagne and a note from Heidi welcoming them back.

The next morning, the designers check out their new workroom in the 1407 Broadway building.  They also check out each other’s collections.  Tim comes in to welcome them and spell out the rules.  The designers will present three looks to the judges.  They should therefore pick out three strong looks that show their range.  As soon as she hears this, Melissa starts to wonder if she’s done enough to get to Fashion Week.  Christopher can’t decide which three looks to pick.  Dmitry tells us that he thinks some of Christopher’s looks are “slutty.”  Given that Christopher’s looks include at least one pair of black leather shorts, I can’t disagree.

Tim comes in to make his rounds and he starts with Fabio.  He advises Fabio to “own” his ideas– even the clunky shoes that Tim had originally hated.  Fabio did at least dye them a pale cream, to better match the outfits.  Tim thinks the judges will either hate or love Fabio’s collection.

Christopher is up next and Tim loves the bleached leather vest he’d made.  He’s worried about Christopher’s indecisiveness, though, especially when the latter says he won’t decide until he’s seen his models.  (I agree:  At the least, Christopher should decide on a first choice, second choice, etc., so he’ll have some sort of starting point.)

Melissa shows Tim the jacket she plans to show the judges, and adds that she has a gown she won’t show until Fashion Week– assuming she gets there.  Sensing her self-doubt, Tim gives her a pep talk.  Feeling better, she gets back to work.

Last up is Dmitry, who has picked out three looks he plans to show.  Tim notices that everything is black and white.  He advises against a black and white collection– especially since Dmitry has a nice yellow dress.  Dmitry decides to stick with his black and whites outfits.  At the end of the day, the designers go home.  Everybody’s nervous about the judging.

The next morning, the designers get back to work.  Tim comes in to tell them they will have three hours to get their models dressed and made-up for the show.  Each designer gets three models.  Christopher has problems finding looks that will fit his three models. Afterwards, the models go to hair and make-up.

On the runway, Heidi welcomes the designers back.  She also reveals that there’s no guest judge; it’s just the regular judges this time around.

Dmitry’s first look is a sleeveless white knee-length dress.  At first glance, it seems to have brown trim in geometric patterns.  A second glance reveals that the “trim” is actually cut-outs showing the model’s dark skin.  His second look includes a black skirt and a very sheer black top that gives viewers a good look at the model’s black bra.  The best part of the look is a patterned black and white jacket that has fringed sleeves made of black leather.  His third look is a sheer black top paired with skinny white pants.

Christopher’s first look includes short black shorts and a see-through cream knit top showing the model’s black bra.  He also made a long vest out of distressed black leather.  His second look includes short black leather shorts and a brown and white shirt made of his x-ray fabric.  From over here, it looks tie-dyed.  His final look consists of a black bustier and a skirt made out of the same brown and white x-ray fabric.  Two looks involving black short shorts aren’t exactly the best way to show one’s range.

Fabio’s first look consists of skinny white pants, a turquoise croptop that looks tie-dyed, and a very long, draped white vest.  He also made an arrow-head necklace in pastel colors.  His second look includes a knee-length white skirt, another blue tie-dyed top, and a cream vest that gapes so much in front it simply looks way too small for the model.  His last look is a very pale pink dress with asymmetrical sleeves:  one side is sleeveless and the other has a short sleeve.  The dress has a slit up the front, and Fabio made a plastic necklace with a stacked arrowhead design.

Last up is Melissa.  Her first look consists of short white shorts and a sleeveless black tunic with a good part of the front cut out.  Her second look consists of skinny black pants, a black top, and a white leather jacket with an oversized black collar and black cuffs.  Her last look is a sleeveless little black dress with an oversized collar.

The judges start with Fabio who tells them his collection is called “Cosmic Tribalism.”  Heidi likes his point of view, his necklaces, and his handbags.  Moving on to the actual clothes, she loves the colors.  Michael also likes the colors, and he enjoys the contrast of normally sweet colors being used with edgy designs.  On the other hand, he doesn’t like the wigs.  Nina thinks some of the pieces, like the vest, are beautiful– but they don’t look expensive enough.  She thinks the necklaces and other finishing touches look “junior” and unsophisticated.

Dmitry is next.  He talks about being inspired by organic architecture and some of New York’s buildings.  He also wanted to do something “graphic.”  Nina likes the white dress with its cut outs, but she thinks the styling needs work.  Michael agrees and adds that Dmitry needs to make his styling seem younger.  He also thinks Dmitry has too many ideas and needs to edit.  The jacket is great– but such “wow” pieces need to stand on their own.  In this case, pairing the jacket with a sheer top was a mistake, as the latter distracted viewers from the jacket.  Similarly, Heidi advises pairing show-stoppers with simpler pieces.

Christopher tells the judges about how he’d used his mother’s X-ray to make a textile.  Heidi thinks it’s creepy.  She does like the colors he got with it.  On the other hand, she would have preferred a wow piece to his separates, as the tops and the shorts are boring.  Michael agrees and calls them “banal.”  They are beautifully made, though.  Nina thinks the first two outfits are both too similar and too skimpy.  The vest is good, though.

Melissa wanted to show her range and thus chose to show shorts, pants, and a dress.  Heidi loves the jacket, but thinks the dress is too simple.  Michael wishes the designers hadn’t held back their show-stopping pieces for Fashion Week.  He reminds all the designers that the models have to be impeccable from head to toe.  He loves Melissa’s white jacket and handbags, but hates the wigs she had her models wear.  Nina asks if the whole collection is black and white and Melissa answers that she does have a red piece.  Nina tells her that a black and white collection requires amazing styling to be successful.  She also suggests shortening the jacket’s sleeves.

The judges then have their chat.  Dmitry had made some beautiful pieces but combined them in dowdy ways.  Fabio made the novel choice of using pastels, but his collection needs to look more luxe and sophisticated.  Christopher had made some interesting prints, but may not be much of a showman.  Melissa made very contemporary clothes, including a beautiful jacket.

Heidi then calls everybody back in and announces the judges’ decision:  Everybody is going to Fashion Week.  Everybody needs to fix their styling and otherwise improve their collections.  The designers have two days to make the needed changes.

Next week:  Fashion Week!

Survivor: Philippines – Episode 4 – Move Over Ulong, We Have A New Pathetic Tribe

Is this 2003? Because this felt like a Survivor episode from long ago. It was one of those episodes that prove that the formula for Survivor works and really doesn’t need to be radically tweaked (i.e. Medallion of Power, Redemption Island, etc). Idol play was background and used to supplement the story – not be the story – in all three camps. The challenge was a raw physical challenge, with built in drama and real stakes that did not need manipulation. The breakdowns and conflict did not appear to be “look at me, I’m on TV” like they have been in many recent seasons. I half expected to see Lex, Jenna, Jerri or some old school Survivor wandering around camp at some point.

What I am trying to say is that this was a good installment of Survivor in what is shaping up to be a very interesting season. Matsing continues its headlong descent into Ulong Land, while the other two tribes continue to slowly boil over the side as they have been cooking for 10 days with the same six people and no chance to hit Tribal and air out the grievances. The story in the early going is the Matsing Melodrama – but we have lots of interesting things going on in the other camps in what I assume are some future plotlines waiting to explode. Just one thing…

…is the show going to shuffle the tribes before the merge or not? Because if that’s a no…then we have a very interesting scenario about to take shape. It is not going too far out on a limb to think that Malcolm and Denise will not be able to avoid last place as a Tribe of Two and are potentially the next two out. This would be remarkable for the show’s history – when Steph was a Tribe of One it was only for a night. She didn’t have to compete against Koror by herself. But let’s say the Ulonging of Matsing is complete and we wind up with six Tandang vs. six Kalabaw. Well, that’s probably the merge. All hell could break loose at that merge – neither tribe is completely unified (and next week’s previews bode very badly for Kalabaw) and there could be some scrambling.

RC is starting to see that her alliance has dissolved right behind her back. Abinormal is out of her mind (like the nickname? Thanks Mel Brooks). Could RC and Skupin flip to a new alliance with Kalabaw’s crew? What about the growing gender divide on Kalabaw? Could the Kalabaw men lure Artis and Skupin, with RC coming in with nowhere else to go? Could the women form a cross-tribe alliance? Might we have another 6 vs. 6 Tribal and some potential Cochran-style flipping? Or the second ever appearance of the Purple Rock?

How about this? Kent’s bad knee introduced in the first episode pulls him from the game next week and one Matsing survives to the merge. Does Malcolm/Denise join Kalabaw’s six and even things up, or join Tandang’s six to set up a Pagonging of Kalabaw? The later is a safer bet – as they go further and becomes the wedge vote in a dysfunctional group of six. Ironic if this scenario takes hold – the show wanted the three tribes to avoid the early alliances from domination, only to have one tribe implode and potentially ensure two early alliances to take power.

Tandang – I looked up my preview to see what I wrote about Pete, because he made no impression in the first two episodes before showing up with a vengeance last week. This week – more of that. I saw him as either an early out or a real player, depending on the execution of his Alpha Dog intentions. He wanted to be another Russell Hantz. Well, based on this week, he is on his way. The tribe found the idol clue peeking out of RC’s stuff – you know, the clue that was hidden previously. Abinormal lost it – she somehow saw this as RC’s betrayal of her and the split between the women became official. And Pete was the one who dug it up and planted it to ensure Abinormal would write off RC for good. He sees RC as his big threat in the tribe (correct) and he has now put her first in line for the vote should Tandang ever lose.

By the way, I know it is hard to reason with crazy, but just how would that clue’s appearance in RC’s stuff have betrayed Abinormal? Weren’t they supposedly a team searching for the idol – at least in RC’s mind? Wouldn’t that mean the clue was equally hers? Wouldn’t that also mean that it’s discovery would logically have been an error? An error is something you can be mad at her for committing – but to call it a betrayal? Not to mention – of course – that Abinormal is the one who betrayed RC by linking up with Pete and finding the idol without her!!! This is one wacky tribe.

Kalabaw – Amazing what an idol can do to the dynamic of a tribe. On Tandang, it exploded an alliance and formed a new one with an emerging mastermind. On Kalabaw, it saved Jonathan Penner. Like Coach, he was treated as an outsider by the new players at first. Unlike Coach, it’s taken him 10 days and an idol to change things (Coach did it after the first day or two). Thankfully for him, they haven’t had to go to Tribal at all, so he had the time to make things right. This week, he had another bit of good fortune. In a stunning bit of news (and I mean, not stunning at all), 40-something Kent is having a hard time talking to the younguns. Maybe having Penner – an intelligent, witty guy – around for a while ain’t exactly a bad idea after all. And he has an idol, which helps.

The interesting side effect is that the new Kent-Penner alliance – sealed with the full handshake, mind you – came with a little brother. Carter. It seems the previously unheard from Carter was unheard from for a reason. Oh my, if he goes deep he will be Samoa Brett all over again, a seemingly nice young guy with absolutely nothing to say.

Amazing Race 21 – Ep 2 – A Big Yellow Taxi Took My Race Dreams Away

Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got, til it’s gone?
I need to stop finding teams I like. Upon watching this week’s episode with my wife, she asked me which teams I liked early on. It is fairly early to get a good sense of the teams – not a lot of airtime to go around for each one – but I mentioned some early affection for Fantasy Island (Gary/Will), The Hairs (James/Abba), and Amy/Daniel (no good nickname). So, obviously, one of them was going to get eliminated. Kiss. Of. Death.

In reality, all three teams struggled in some manner this week – in fact, most teams struggled at some point as the Race took them from China to Indonesia. Only the Twins, Texas and Magic Mike seemed to be without any real challenges. The rest of them either had trouble with the Race tasks, airport navigation or the dreaded local taxi problems. In the end, it was the taxi issue which claimed yet another victim. No other factor in Race history has claimed more teams’ scalps than bad taxi drivers. Not Killer Fatigue. Not bad clue reading. Not bad challenge performances. Not even bad team navigation has done more damage than the taxi driver. And it is the reason why we get so many clue instructions telling teams to take taxis.

First, the airport navigation. And I am looking right at you, Monsters. You guys got lucky. Really lucky. Teams have been hopelessly left behind because they got too adventurous with tickets. Remember All-Stars’ Uchenna/Joyce? Here is a basic rule – if you are the only team on a flight – double check the details of that flight. Twice. There is no excuse for being on a flight with a four-hour layover with this many teams left. None. If you didn’t get some serious good fortune with an overnight arrival and a semi-bunching, that could have been Race fatal. As it was, you would up last to go with the bull racing challenge. If that challenge took any skill whatsoever, you could have still been behind by a substantial margin heading towards the Roadblock. Bad Race move – learn from it.

Speaking of the bull racing? How useless was that? It didn’t have to be. The actual bull racing looked cool – a rickety old sled attached to two bulls that tears it up down a field? Put Racers on there and it would be hysterical. But no. Instead they race alongside on mopeds. Wait, correction, they RIDE alongside on mopeds. At least there’s some consequence should the bulls beat the mopeds to the finish. They have to go to the end of the line and try again, right? No. They don’t. They could lose by a mile to the bulls and just walk the mopeds to the end and get the clue. They whole thing was just an excuse to send the teams off to the Roadblock with staggered times. Useless.

Then the Roadblock happened. And it is one of the goofiest ones in a while. Racers had to generate power for a tiny kiddie merry-go-round – or as my son calls it, an “American Round” – by pedaling a bicycle. Let me just say – Worst. Ride. Ever. Those poor kids were going around and around at a snail’s pace. How is that fun? They’d move faster if they were blown by the wind. Adding to the challenge weirdness, Racers have to blow up several balloon animals while pedaling. Is this common behavior for parents in Indonesia? It is one of the oddest bits of multitasking I can recall seeing. Seriously, are there no clowns in Indonesia? The Hairs were the first to arrive and find the red and yellow balloons marking the location of the weird challenge. Amy and Dan arrive next. Remember that.

Hair James, Amy and Abbie all struggle to get the balloons done as Magic Mike and Texas arrive. James with a Y and Lexi take the challenge and kill it. Y is worried the kids were afraid of him. Heck, I was a little afraid of him. Dude acts at all times like he just did a line of coke in the bathroom. Lexi thinks her multi-tasking skills will do her well here – and I wonder what kind of sorority pledge she did that was similar to this kind of multi-tasking. She is proven to be correct as she and Y finish first, most of the others follow suit, with the Twins squawking at giant volumes all the way through. If Y was doing coke, these two drank a case of Red Bull at the Pit Stop.
