School Spirits July 18 – Lucien versus Daisy till death

Late at night when most people are asleep, there are those of us who are wide awake with insomnia. Tonight’s episode of Syfy’s School Spirits is based on actual events and relived, re-enacted by those who survived to tell their nightmarish tales that kept them awake for many sleepless nights.

Night terrors, horrible dreams, torment, dangerous spirits and poltergeist take on a girl’s school. Sweet Briar College, Virginia (Class of 2007) is haunted beyond belief as Elise Stine recalls her first intense experience with what could possibly be a ghost. Elise was heading back to her dorm after going to the gym and was thinking that “something was not right and something was making my skin crawl.” She snapped her head back to look and saw something.

It was inches away her. Two years later Dani Humpreys (Class of 2013) was accepted into Sweet Briar and was ecstatic as she was drawn to the school. According to Professor Lynn Rainville, Sweet Briar was founded in 1901 as an all-women’s college. At the time, most of the existing all-male universities would not accept women.

Chloe Day and Laure Herzog (both Class of 2014) spent time with Dani and Sarah Fletcher (Class of 2013), and all decided to room together on campus. What seemed like a nice situation would soon turned really badly, really fast! During the first month they moved in, Dani had to use the bathroom at around 3:30 in the morning and headed to the bathroom.

Dani witnessed the sink turning on by itself and was in a stall nowhere near the sink. She began hearing noises and the faucet turned on again. She knew she was alone in the bathroom, but felt a strong presence. This is why people should do everything in groups! She finally had enough and burst out of the stall screaming “Who is it?” There was no one in the bathroom with her and no water in the sink. Dani decided to stay quiet about her nightmarish bathroom experience.

Sarah was unsure what was going on with Dani. One late night she also got up to use the restroom. Again folks, go in groups; take a flashlight! It helps! Sarah heard footsteps other than her own right behind her. Of course, she kept walking! In the hallway window, she saw her reflection and the reflection of a young girl standing right next to her.

If Sarah would have not been alone, or if she would have told someone, maybe they could have stopped this sooner. Her look of terror as she tells the story over again says it all. She saw the reflection of a young girl in a white nightgown and realized there was someone or something standing next to her and freaked out. She turned and ran back to her room as if she were running a track meet.

Sarah finally fessed up and told Dani what she was experiencing. Dani became very serious and worried. Sarah did not believe in the paranormal. Dani thought about what happened to her in the bathroom. She felt a certain amount of comfort knowing that she was not alone.

Dani decided to show Sarah some photos. While they knew about some of the ghost stories on campus, they thought it was just a joke. Sarah stared at the photo for a minute and recognized the girl instantly. It was the ghost she saw in the window.

Sweet Briar College was founded by a successful plantation manager, Indiana Fletcher Williams. She had a child named Daisy. The girl was given an elite education. She had foreign language tutors, loved to draw and paint and play piano, and had a very luxurious childhood and a well-rounded education. She loved reading and was very well off compared to the students today at Sweet Briar.

Dani’s sister decided to come and visit her, and they decided to go visit one of Dani’s friends. They took the elevator, which was rather new for the building they were in. As the elevator headed to the third floor it began to pass the floor, as you need a skeleton key to go beyond the third floor.” The elevator door opened and there was a chair facing the elevator door. It looked to Dani as if someone was sitting in the chair on the fourth floor facing the elevator.

Okay so elevators and bathrooms are now on the list in which you should go in groups. Dani and her sister realized that whatever it was, it did not want them in the elevator. They panicked and tried to push buttons/ Dani decided she was going to face her fear and realizes it might be Daisy. She called her name a few times and the chair began moving frantically. Dani yelled “Daisy, stop” and the chair stopped.

Daisy had suffered from an inherited liver disease that was not treatable, and it caused her death on January 22, 1884, despite the money that Indiana was pouring into treatments. Indiana was devastated with grief and never recovered from Daisy’s death.

Cathy Gutierrez, a Professor at Sweet Briar, says that Indiana turned Daisy’s death into a promise to found a college and give money to young girls and young women. Daisy is buried on the land around the college which was the former plantation under a monument called Monument Hill. They have an annual tradition walking up to Monument Hill together and placing daisies on Daisy’s grave thanking her for everything.

The girls felt that Daisy was not there to threaten anyone or hurt anyone. Cathy said “the purpose of the school is to give every girl a chance to finish school and do what Daisy could not.” She was there to watch over the girls of Sweet Briar.

Chloe woke up the next morning and left her dorm at around 5:30 a.m. for morning swimming practice. She wanted to hurry and was walking behind the athletic center when she heard a whistle. She didn’t see anyone, but heard the whistle. She believed it was someone playing a joke, but there was no one around. Spotting a six foot tall dark black shadow figure, she turned to run, but then stopped because she just had to look again!

As Chloe was looking, her body froze and the figure appeared behind her. She was still standing there frozen when she should be running! Look behind you! She felt like she was going to pass out and could not move as the figure was behind her. He sang a tune that someone would sing to a little girl. Yeah the creepy guy in Poltergeist did that, and it didn’t turn out to well.

Chloe finally ran after about seven minutes and told Dani what she experienced. Dani said there was no way a male could have gotten onto the campus without checking in. Chloe believed that whatever she saw was coming to get her. She felt unsafe even in daylight. This was not a joke or a prank and was serious. Dani decided to do some research.

Dani discovered there was a man named Lucien who was Indiana’s brother and Daisy’s uncle. Indiana was one of four children, Sidney, Elizabeth, Lucien. While each child inherited a plantation, Lucien was left out! He was the bad seed apparently. Lucien was disinherited and apparently was making his anger known. Indiana had left $750,000 to found the college, and Lucien did not get a penny. He was furious. Now Dani understood why he would want to drive everyone away.

Sarah decided to have a friend stay over. There was a blow up matress in the middle of the room. Sarah was having a dream that she was being choked; she said it felt like a board or plywood being pressed against her throat.

Sarah instantly shot up in bed and was in pure panic mode. She noticed a figure and was terrified. She said it had looked as if someone was sitting at the end of the blow up mattress. She wanted to get away but did not want to move. She screamed for Dani to wake up and kept asking, “Do you see it?” Dani looked and saw the same dark black figure sitting on the mattress. They were petrified.

Okay now I take a moment to check in my closet and look under my bed and maybe grab some holy water, you know just precautions. Some families usually have the crazy, funny uncle, but this one had the psycho killer ghost uncle.

These girls had thought this was just a little girl, but now it was much worse. Neither one of the girls could move or turn on the lights. Every time they spoke, the figure’s head would turn in the direction they were talking. Chloe turned her back to the figure. and it suddenly started moving directly towards Dani. Their dorm neighbor came in and asked, “What is going on in here?”

The figure was gone, but the mattress was partially deflated where they had seen someone sitting. Dani had immediately thought of Lucien and his anger. Lucien was angry at his sister and was troubled and known for his outlaw behavior. He was accused of killing two different people on two different occasions.

Lucien was angry that Indiana had inherited money and he was disinherited. He was furious and full of wrath and had plans to take what was his. Lucien threatened to kill Indiana, and she was so scared she had bars put up to protect herself from him. When Lucien died, Indiana refused to allow him to be buried on her plantation.

Dani said it made sense to them why Lucien decided to show himself to the girls. He was angry that it became a women’s college. Everything was becoming more dangerous, and Dani and the girls could no longer protect themselves.

Dani decided that she and Sarah could no longer live together because so much would happen. They decided to separate and part ways but remain friends. Dani was now living with Laure, and they tried to start over.

Dani’s body had given out completely. She was dreaming about being shaken. Two hands were wrapped around her arms and someone was rapidly shaking her. Someone was screaming at her, and she could not look at his face. She felt a hand wake her up and noticed the curtain blowing. There was no fan on and the windows were shut.

Dani looked over at Laure and something was very wrong, Laure looked as if someone was choking the life out of her. Okay now it is time for the exorcist! Someone call a priest! It is amazing what people must go through before they really start to consider trying to understand what is going on and how to stop it.

Dani looked at Laure who was choking and in fear. She was dreaming when a man suddenly whispered, “Well hello Laure.” She couldn’t breathe. There was another presence in the room and Dani tried to figure out what to do. Nothing like getting up and turning the lights on and screaming for help!

Laure was gasping for her life and was trying to look around to figure out what was choking her. The figure looked at Dani and placed his fingers to her lips to gesture to Dani to be quiet. The figure looked up, and the little girl was standing above Laure’s head board. He finally backed off and Laure was able to take a few breaths.

Thank the Lord they finally got up! Dani arrived at the pool the next morning and took her jacket off and discovered a massive hand-shaped bruise wrapped around her arm. They had thought she had hit her arm or hurt herself swimming, but Dani said she woke up with the bruise that went around her entire bicep. They took a photo of Dani’s arm.

The scariest part of this for Dani was the knowledge that someone could do something to you and that you have no control. The girls believe Daisy sticks around to help keep Lucien at bay. She may do some things as a warning to help them. Dani feels she is in a place she should be, even if bad things happen. The girls remain at Sweet Briar, and the creepiness continues. We wish them all the best and safety. Remember buy flash lights folks, lots of flash lights!

School Spirits July 25 – Blood and Smoke

On tonight’s episode of School Spirits, sometimes insomnia is not such a bad thing. People tend to fall asleep when the “spirit world” is most active. Rebecca Kirschbaum (Class of 2011) describes Eastern Kentucky University as “old and very pretty,” as most creepy haunted places are. She was happy because for the first time she did not “\have a curfew and did not have to answer to anybody.” Her mother Kimberly said “she had a fresh start.”

Rebecca’s sister Tabitha said Rebecca was very popular and hung out with the “cool crowd.” She was a popular college student with a normal life until one day everything changed. Rebecca saw a figure with no eyes. Rebecca was zoned out. and her friends tried to get her attention. She walked away, headed outside, and saw the figure of a boy crawling on the ground. She tried to convince herself that she was seeing things or tharher imagination was in overdrive.

Rebecca called her mother, finally someone who calls for help right away! She had thought she was going crazy and told her mom. Her father and mother picked up Rebecca up from college, and her mom decided to take her to counseling. Rebecca’s mom felt helpless. Rebecca would not leave college because it “wasn’t an option” and she was part of the honors program. She went back to college, took classes, and began to draw while her professor advised to “beware the Ides of March.”

Maybe she should have picked up holy water on the way back. Rebecca turned to drawing and art. Stephanie Bingham (Class of 2011) was in the Honors Rhetoric class with Rebecca where she spotted her drawing ” intensely.” Stephanie asked Rebecca what she was drawing and her “eyes were as wide as saucers” as she answered, saying she wasn’t drawing anything.
Rebecca felt that drawing was therapeutic for her and felt Stephanie had nothing to offer her.

Rebecca had known that Stephanie was into “ghosts and the occult” and felt she was weird. Stephanie had been experiencing “ghosts and things of that nature” her entire life. In the beginning she considered them to be dangerous.

Stephanie got over her fear quickly and figured the ghosts had not hurt her yet, so she was okay. Stephanie frequently saw a Victorian ghost and believed “EKU” had a lot of paranormal activity. She also believed Rebecca was a “typical wannabe sorority type of girl.” She noticed the Victorian ghost one day while sitting outside on campus and noticed Rebecca stopped and looked in the same direction she was looking.

Stephanie knew then that Rebecca needed her help. Rebecca was raised in a Christian family and anything paranormal or psychic-related was considered evil or demonic. Rebecca tried to “pray it away,” but it didn’t work. One night in Rebecca’s room, she had heard something in the corner by her closet. She was afraid to look because she knew something was there.

Rebecca saw a “shadow figure” that was an outline of a person. It was “wavy or curly” and “everything about it was scary.” Rebecca lay really still and prayed for it to go away. I would say she should have gottem up and ran like hell, but what do I know?!

Rebecca laid still in bed, then leapt out of bed and ran out of her room. Rebecca felt it “was like living in a horror movie.” The next day her roommate came to her and said she saw a man in the room wearing black. She was frightened and scared. Rebecca had thought this was all something she made up, but her roommate insisted she saw it because it was over Rebecca’s bed.

Her roommate was so scared she began sleeping in the lobby, leaving Rebecca completely alone with whatever was in her room. She put a chair in front of the door, but it burst through, moving the chair. Rebecca rolled out of bed in her pajamas and went to search for Stephanie and found her in the library. Stephanieasked Rebecca what she thought of her, and Rebecca replied she thought she was crazy or schizophrenic.

That is really not a nice way to deal with the person who is going to help you. Stephanie decided to go see Rebecca’s ghost, and they headed back to her dorm room. Stephanie went in first and examined the room. She stared into the corner of the room where there was a slender black shadow figure, but  was not scared.

Stephanie turned to Rebecca who was standing petrified in the doorway and said “Let’s go.” They left the room and Stephanie told her that if it is bothering her that much she should just leave. Stephanie told Rebecca that it was not harmful to her and she could try and get rid of it, but in Rebecca’s mind the ghosts were all evil.

Rebecca was now seeing things all the time. She was not sure what to do. For someone who believes spirits, ghosts and paranormal in general are all evil, it can be difficult for them to handle any type of paranormal. Stephanie was not affraid of the ghosts, but Rebecca was petrified, so it was different for both of them. Rebecca was not sleeping and was scared to death. The shadow figure had appeared in her nightmares and tried to strangle her.

Rebecca finally was able to change her room. She left her dorm room and moved into a room in the honors dorm. She was still scared, but hoped whatever was in her previous room did not leave her. She discovered her new roommate was Stephanie. These two seem to like to talk about each other more than the spirits, but it is part of their story. Rebecca admitted “there were a few things about Stephanie that drove me crazy.”

Stephanie had thought everything was fine other than the fact that they were complete opposites. It took Rebecca a while to come to terms with the fact that she wasn’t crazy and neither was Stephanie. Rebecca decided to go outside and catch a smoke and heard someone call her name. She heard “Becca” over and over and took off running. She ran to the dorm and shut the door. The figure reached for her, and she took off running again.

Rebecca should have joined the track team! There’s a thought! She saw it again in the hallway and headed back to her room. Stephanie believed Rebecca was facing an “internal crisis” and what Rebecca was dealing with was scary and violent. They were complete opposites, and the spirits had different effects on them. Stephanie had looked through Rebecca’s tablets and saw the drawings of the ghosts that they both saw.

Rebecca walked in and saw Stephanie looking through her drawings. She explained to Rebecca that she could help her. Stephanie decided to take Rebecca to see a ghost that she had seen several times before. Stephanie believed her and told her she was not crazy. Rebecca saw the woman sitting under the tree. Rebecca described her to Stephanie and they saw the same things.

Nick Wade (Class of 2011) met Rebecca and Stephanie. The girls had formed a bond, and Rebecca wanted to make friends again, but the terror was not over yet. Stephanie headed downstairs one night to do laundry, and as she carried her wash, she felt something push her down the stairs. She saw a little girl with sharp teeth who smiled at her to who off the teeth.

Stephanie explained “she looked like a demon and her eyes were glittering with glee.” Stephanie was petrified and did not want to be alone, so she headed back to the room to tell Rebecca what she saw. Stephanie was scared and believed she saw a demon. Rebecca decided they needed to get off campus, so she took Stephanie home to her parents’ house. She advised Stephanie to be nice.

Stephanie is not normally the type of person Rebecca hangs out with, so her parents thought she was not nice. They all ate dinner, then went to bed when Rebecca’s dad heard noises. It sounded like a little toddler running across the house. He heard laughter from a little girl. Rebecca’s mother was skeptical and questioned him. They checked to see if Rebecca and Stephanie were asleep, and they were of course.

Rebecca’s mother looked down the stairs and went flying down the steps. Rebecca and Stephanie woke up, and Rebecca’s mom told them she felt like she was “pushed” down the steps. Stephanie mentioned she was pushed down the stairs back on campus. and they begin comparing stories. Rebecca believed she was the common factor.

Rebecca thought she was attracting violent, emotional and demonic ghosts. She didn’t want anyone she loved or cared about to get hurt, so she and Stephanie headed back to campus where everything appeared more sinister than normal. Rebecca headed outside one night to the smoke box so she could collect her thoughts, and a woman appeared behind her and behind the glass of the smoke box calling her name.

The stories are based on actual events so imagine this happening. It is kind of crazy, but if you believe in the paranormal it is fascinating. Rebecca heard the voice before. There was a bloody woman wearing strange clothes and no shoes. The woman appeared to want to tell Rebecca something, but she just wanted the woman to go away. She headed back into the dorm room and told Stephanie what she saw.

Rebecca flet that something was not resolved as she tried to go to sleep. She talks to Nick for a while who notices her distance. Nick decides to head outside one night to the smoke box and saw the woman walking towards him. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing and started to feel a wave of emotion including terror and angst. The woman stopped in front of him and said, “There’s been a murder,” then moved on.

Nick had never experienced an encounter with the supernatural before. He headed to Rebecca and Stephanie’s room and began to describe the woman to the two of them. Rebecca was afraid that someone would get hurt because of her. Nick had known from their response that something else was going on.

There was some sense of urgency. The next night Stephanie and Rebecca were walking home from a restaurant through a wooded area. Good idea, right! The two were in the woods and Rebecca began to sense something. It came out from behind a tree and they take off running like the wind. They should have stuck to lit roads or carried flashlights.

Stephanie and Rebecca turned and saw a man with a bandana over his face, and he followed them to campus where they ran inside. Rebecca called the police, and they believed that the woman was there to warn them. Rebecca and Stephanie had found out that a woman had been murdered.

Reporter Jacqueline Sprague said “in the winter of 2011, a woman was brutally murdered right near the campus of Eastern Kentucky.” Jacqueline has only covered one murder. and it was the woman who was stabbed to death. She meant them no harm and may have just saved their life.

Stephanie and Rebecca became best friends. Rebecca knows now that not all ghosts are bad. After the man nearly got the two of them in the woods, she believes the spirit of the murdered woman saved them.

Project Runway Season 10: Designers in a Candy Store

Last week on Project Runway, 16 new designers descended on New York City to contend for $50,000 worth of technology from HP, $100,000 from L’Oreal, a fashion spread in Marie Claire, and a new Lexus.  Their first challenge:  Select an already-made outfit that reflected their aesthetic and then make a companion piece for it.  Christopher won and Beatrice was sent home.

The next morning, the designers get ready to face the day.  Lantie’s shocked to have been in the bottom and Ven’s upset he didn’t win.  Then it’s off to the runway, where Heidi tells them to meet Tim at a “sweet location,” which turns out to be Dylan’s Candy Bar, which is owned by Dylan Lauren, the daughter of Ralph Lauren.  She will also serve as a guest judge.

As most of the designers have guessed, it’s the “unconventional materials” challenge.  They will have a budget of $250.00, but since Dylan is giving them a 50% discount, they actually can buy five hundred dollars’ worth of candy.  They have the traditional 30 minutes to pick out stuff, and they will have a day to come up with something.  While shopping, Ven sees a wall of jelly beans that reminds him of stained-glass windows and decides to incorporate that image in his look.

Back at Parson’s, the designers sketch and then get to work.  Buffi weaves candy ribbons into a textile for her look.  Elena decides to make a warrior woman look with shoulder pads made of pina colada twists.  Tim pops in to tell everybody they have until 1 a.m.  Gunnar and Christopher snipe at each other and Gunnar tells us that Christopher is threatened by him.

Alicia is making a one-shoulder garment, while Sonjia of the blue hair is using jelly beans and blue gummi sharks in her look.  Buffi decides to cut corners somewhat and use a colorful umbrella from the shop for a circle skirt.  She uses a hammer to smash the umbrella apart, causing Ven to say that she’s too noisy.  Lantie tells us about how she went bankrupt when the economy crashed a few years ago.

Andrea talks about how she was born on Halloween and plans to make a “Victorian candy clerk” outfit.  Kooan is using Twizzlers to make a sweater.  Ven notes that part of the challenge of an “unconventional materials ” challenge is to make something that looks both wearable and as if it were made from conventional materials.  He also tells us that he knows he’s good.  As proof of that, he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and won several awards while there.

Tim comes in to make his rounds and starts with Nathan, who has made a rigid skirt out of what looks like sour balls or some other hard candy.  It weighs twenty pounds.  Christopher is working on a dress, and Tim calls his plans for the finished product, “ambitious.”  Raul is working on a bodice and trying to make it look like actual fabric.  Tim approves.  He is similarly pleased with Melissa, who has made licorice whips look like black leather.  Tim notes that Elena has a lot of work left to do.  He also points out that using color might be a good idea in a candy challenge.

He stops by Sonjia, and is impressed with her turquoise bodice, saying it looks as if it’s made of sea-glass, rather than candy.  Ven talks about his stained-glass window idea and Tim likes what he sees so far.  He notes that Fabio has a lot of work to do.  Buffi shows him the textile she’s been weaving.  Gunnar shows Tim the checkerboard textile he’s making out of licorice pieces.  He will use candy black hearts for decoration.

Next up is Dmitry, who wants to know when the models are coming in.  He has a candy fringe, but he doesn’t want to attach it to his skirt until he’s sure that the skirt fits properly.  Tim tells him that he doesn’t have time to waste just waiting around and urges him to attach the fringe.  Tim notes that Kooan and Lantie also need to watch their time.  Andrea shows Tim the dress she’s made out of candy dots on paper– and he hates it.  He calls it “sloppy” and “craft-project.”  Not surprisingly, she decides to start over.

The models come in for their fitting– but they find that only a few designers have clothes ready for them to try on.  Among these are Dmitry and Sonjia, who are both relieved to find that their items fit.  Lantie decides to start over and make something out of some umbrella fabric.  Buffi makes a bird’s nest out of cotton candy for her look, and then adds a bird.  Towards the end of the day, Elena burns herself on the thigh with a glue gun, prompting Christopher to rhetorically ask, “Why are you wearing hoochie shorts to work?”  (He’s right:  Glue guns and exposed skin are not a good combination.  I also don’t know too many places where short shorts are considered a good look for a professional.)

The following morning, the designers get back to work.  Elena’s leg is still hurting her.  Kooan and Buffi both discover that cotton candy makes a lousy textile, as their pieces have melted.  They quickly make replacements.  Tim then sends in the models for their final fitting.  While some get into their outfits, others go to hair and make-up.

On the runway, Heidi re-introduces the guest judge, Dylan Lauren, the founder and CEO of Dylan’s Candy Bar.  Then it’s time for the show.

Gunnar is first, and he made a cocktail dress.  He used black and white licorice twists to make a checkerboard pattern on said dress.  Sonjia made an aqua and white cocktail dress out of jelly beans and almond candies.  She used the gummi sharks to make a collar.  She also made a small flat hat.  Melissa made separates:  a black mini-skirt and a short black tank top.

Nathan made a 20-pound, multi-colored, and rigid skirt out of pastel-colored hard candies of some type.  He also made a turquoise and white bodice.  Andrea made a long apron out of candy dots.  She also made a multi-colored bustle out of umbrella fabric.  It looks as strange as it sounds.  Alicia’s look is just as strange.  There’s a white bikini top made of some sort of hard candy, plus green and orange over-all shorts with just one suspender.

Elena used every pina colada licorice stick in the store to make a cream cocktail dress with short sleeves and big shoulders.  Apparently, Elena’s not that handy with a glue gun, since her dress is shedding licorice sticks as her model walks.  Fabio made a sleeveless blue cocktail dress.  Dmitry made a beaded black cocktail dress with red and yellow trim.  The skirt has a red and black fringe.  Kooan made a garish, multi-colored cocktail dress that has an abstract pattern on it.  Like Elena’s look, it’s shedding candy.

Christopher made a black, white, and purple cocktail dress with thin stripes in a zigzag pattern.  Raul’s look is schizophrenic.  From the front, it looks like separates consisting of a green skirt and a sleeveless blue top.  From the back, it looks like a blue and orange dress.  Buffi apparently ran into time problems, for her top is consists of yellow, pink, and orange candy ribbons woven together, while her skirt is made of pink umbrella fabric.

Lantie’s dress is made of multi-colored umbrella fabric.  The only candy on it are some hard candies used to make the yellow flowers decorating the skirt.  Er, Lantie, in an “unconventional materials” challenge, the unconventional material isn’t supposed to be an afterthought.  Ven made a sleeveless, pastel cocktail dress with a stylized flower design on the front.  The various colors are separated from each other by distinct black lines, creating the stained glass window effect Ven was aiming for.

Heidi then calls Gunnar, Elena, Ven, Sonjia, Lantie, and Buffi.  They will have to face the judges, while the others are safe.  Andrea is very happy to be safe.  Her fellow designers guess that Sonjia and Ven will be in the top.

The judges start with Buffi, who simply wanted to use fun colors.  She calls her look “Carrie from Sex and the City.”  Heidi thinks she over-accessorized and that the model looks like a five-year-old.  Michael agrees and says that Buffi’s look is more “Toddlers and Tiaras” than anything else.  Nina thinks the styling is atrocious.  Dylan likes the shirt, but not the skirt.

Sonjia had wanted to a water theme for her look, so she’d grabbed the gummi sharks and any other white or aqua candy she could find.  Heidi likes the dress, but not the hat.  The other judges agree that the dress is great.  Dylan appreciates the fact that she used more types of candy than anybody else.

Lantie tries to defend her look, but the judges don’t buy her pleas of not having enough time to make anything– not when several of her competitors managed to turn out nice outfits in the time allotted.  Michael says she seems to be more of a decorator than an actual designer.  Ouch.

Ven talks about his stained-glass window idea.  He’d used rock candy for the pastel designs and licorice to outline the panels.  The judges love it– although Dylan wishes he’d used more types of candy.

Elena had used pina colada Twizzlers for her look.  Heidi doesn’t think the result is pretty, and Michael comments that the dress takes “all the joy out of candy.”  The dress is also boxy and obscures the model’s shape.  Nina says she understands Elena’s desire for cohesion, but adds there’s a difference between cohesion and being in a rut.

Gunnar likes lines and had also used licorice pieces for his look.  He’d used them to create the checkerboard pattern on his dress.  Heidi praises him for creating his own print.  Dylan likes the fact that he’d also made accessories out of candy, like a bracelet made from gumballs.

Afterwards, the judges have their chat, starting with the three they’d liked.  They’d liked Gunnar’s use of accessories and think his look is “on trend.”  Sonjia used the most types of candies and made a charming, beautifully executed dress.  Ven made a gorgeous dress with great colors. Dylan says that her favorites are Sonja and Ven, and that she can’t decide between them.

As for the designers they didn’t like, Lantie had whined about time and Buffi had made a hideous dress.  Elena is arrogant and had made a dress that looked “like a cardboard box.”

The judges then call everybody back to announce their decision.  Ven is the winner.  Sonjia, Gunnar, and Elena are safe, leaving Lantie and Buffi in the bottom.  Lantie is out, which means Buffi is in.

Next week:  It’s a team challenge.  The designers work in pairs and meet contestants from past seasons, including Anya, Irina, and Kenley.

So You Think You Can Dance, July 25 – Watching Great Dancers Leave

The eliminations last week just seemed cruel. All the people that landed in the bottom from the previous week's voting had done so well. It was just so hard to watch four of them leave. It has to get even harder tonight, although only two dancers will be leaving at the end of the night. .

The group dance tonight features the dancers dressed like Charlie Chaplin, both guys and girls. They dance to The Here and After by Jun Miyake. It's filmed all in black and white, with the only color being a red umbrella being passed throughout the dancers. I'm not sure who to credit for this one, but I'm going to guess Travis Wahl or Tyce Diorio. It turns out that Tyce was the correct guess.

Joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy at the judging table tonight is Christina Applegate, back again for her second turn as judge. There's no chit chat tonight with them. It must be a busy night. They have asked the dancers to tell us something they believe we don't know about their partner.

What Tiffany Maher knows we all know about George Lawrence II is that he runs track, but what she doesn't think we know is that he peed his pants at his first track meet at the sound of the starting pistol. While everyone knows Tiffany is pretty, George doesn't think we know she's smart. She had a 5.2 GPA and is her class Salutatorian.

They're working with Napoleon and a very pregnant Tabitha D'Umo on a hip hop routine that is inspired by Adventures in Babysitting. The dancers are their babysitters in the scenario, and they are going insane when the baby cries. Tiffany thinks the dance is harder than babysitting. They dance to Out of My Mind by B.O.B. feat. Nicki Minaj. Tiffany may be smart and beautiful, but she can also get down. She's much better in this than you'd expect her to be.

Nigel thought it was a great NappyTab routine. Their routines are always fun with a bit of a story to them to keep us interested, even the people not interested in dance. He would like to see them getting a little grungier with the hip hop, but it was perfect to open the show. George looked to be a little tired at the end, surprising for a track star. He, too, tells Tiffany she “got down.”

Mary is out of her mind over this couple. They were fabulous and she thought it was so cute with the Dr. Seuss set. She thinks Tabitha and Napoleon played it just right. For the two of them it was right, as well as with Tiffany and George. George is growing up every week and hasn't disappointed her at all. She thought he was really rocking it out, and Tiffany was really getting down. At first it was so soft and sweet, then the music started, and she came out like Princess Dynamo. Mary thinks they're fabulous partners together.

Christina did not expect that dance from either of them. Tiffany is so tough and scary, but she had such a great balance of her goofy sweetness, and that “I never look good in a dress doing this.” On the parts that were slow, she'd like to see it soupier. Other than that, “X marks the spot.” I'm not quite sure what that means.

Brandon Mitchell tells us what we don't know about Amber Jackson is that she's a hair stylist, which makes sense with the different hairstyles she's sporting every time we see her. What we don't know about Brandon is that he's in the main crew of Step Up: Revolution. Does he even need this show if he's already working with Adam Shankman?

The two of them are taking on a Ray Leeper jazz routine. Ray explains it's about a couple who lives in the south who work very, very hard. Brandon explains he comes home, sees this woman who he's happy to see, and it goes from there. She calls it sexy. Since they're a couple put together after the eliminations last week, Ray knows it will be important for them to work on their chemistry. They dance tonight to Dr. Feelgood (Love is Serious Business) by Aretha Franklin. Sexy it is. They definitely have chemistry.

Christina says she's not religious, and while they bleep out what she says, I think she thanks Jesus Christ for that. She asks how excited they were to dance to that song, and also felt it was so private that we houldn't have been there watching them. From the first minute watching Amber sigh, she knew we were going to go on a journey with her. It is the best she has ever seen her dance. What differentiates her from the others is she has some gut and passion that is so sexy and beautiful. She completely forgot Brandon was a stepper because he was so strong and there for her and sexy as well.

Mary, fanning herself, doesn't know what kind of cereal Brandon and Amber had that morning, but there was definitely some soul in that bowl. They've been after Amber to show performance, and tonight it's a sultry snd soulful performance. Brandon is a stepper, sure, but he did fabulous. He had an unforced masculinity and just keeps stepping it up.

Nigel agrees with Cat Deeley that it was reminiscent of the Breakfast Table routine with Sasha and Twitch. Nigel calls it babymaking choreography and wonders if he choreographed Napoleon and Tabitha. He agrees with Mary that they've been trying to get Amber to show what she was feeling, and it was the first time she let it out. Brandon is so strong, and was throwing her around, yet at the same time he was so careful when he put her down on the chair. Yet, he needs to lower his shoulders.

Janelle explains what we don't know about Dareian is that he's a daredevil on and off the stage. He skateboards and is crazy. He thinks it's strange, but cute at the same time that she likes to write rap. It's just kind of weird.

Janelle Isis and Dareian Kujawa worked with Pasha Kovalev on a cha cha. She calls it sexy, fun, and so incredibly hard. Pasha wants Dareian to be really cool and incredibly strong and not fall into Janelle's charm. He thinks at the end of the day, they'll be perfect for this cha cha, despite Dareian saying his hips don't move like that. They dance tonight to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen. I never thought of cha cha when I've listened to this song. She definitely has the hips for this, and while he doesn't, he's a strong dancer in all other ways.

Mary tells Janelle and Dareian they had a phenomenal couple of tricks in the dance, but the dancing was going in and out and they had no real chemistry. The transitions were so rough, mainly because they're not connected to their center with their arms. The feet were lacking as well. They're the most adorable couple, though, and are sure to have lots of fans.

Christina recognizes it's not Janelle and Dareian's genre, but that they gave their best. Janelle sparkles and is a beautiful girl with such poise. Dareian is a great dancer, but his strange hand things he had going on were distracting to her.

Nigel thinks Christina picked up on that really well. The arm that isn't doing any work is being forgotten about and is just being left there. Dareian needs to watch his feet, because he turns his toes in and picks his feet up which isn't right for this style. Janelle is so sexy when she belly dances, but he didn't find that in this routine, whether it was because she was nervous or another routine. When you see Pasha and Anya do these routines, there's a connectivity that's sensational, and he didn't feel it from Janelle and Dareian.

Top Chef Masters 4 – Episode 1 – Excuse Me, I’m The Queen of Lemons

I have been gone from writing about cooking for so long, I forgot that the show actually returned! That’s right – this week marked the return of the Top Chef franchise after a virtually unheard of two month absence since Paul took the gold in Top Chef. We return with the franchise’s middle child – Masters. To sum up its past – first two seasons had a goofy preliminary round format and a wooden model host. Season 3 replace her with the hunky Curtis Stone, and sliced the participants down to 12 in a more standard Top Chef Competition format. Floyd took the title the last time the Masters threw down for competition – and battled for glory, ego and cash for charities.

Returning for action – Stone is host once again. Judges James Oseland (Bert on these pages due to how he reminds me of what Sesame Street’s Bert would be if he was an adult human food critic), Ruth Reichl (no nickname, but RR in my shorthand notes), and new judges. Salon and Gourmet writer Francis Lam did not appear this week, but LAist Food Editor Krista Simmons did. She may or not be related to Gail, but one thing is for sure, she looks like she could have played Katniss in the Hunger Games. That’s right – she’s 15 years old. Not really, but I was so distracted by how young she looked, I almost asked her to babysit.

The Masters

Patricia Yeo Om Restaurant & Lounge / Moksa Pan Asian Izakaya – Charity: Heifer Project International. A Bobby Flay disciple – she focuses on Asian-inspired American food, and Asian street food. And I must say, she looks so much like Margaret Cho’s version of Kim Jong Il from 30 Rock last season.

Takashi Yagihashi Takashi Restaurant and Slurping Turtle – Charity: Japanese Tsunami Disaster Relief. James Beard winner of Best Chef: Midwest in 2003. And his Noodles restaurant was one of the “Five Best Noodle Shops in America” by Bon Appétit.

Art Smith LYFE Kitchen and Southern Art Restaurants – Charity: Common Threads . Season 1 contestant Smith is back and 120 pounds lighter. He was once Oprah’s personal chef and owns Art and Soul here in DC. And he’s wearing a snappy hat.

Thierry Rautureau Rover’s and Luc – Charity: Food Lifeline. Another past contestant, and another snappy hat, and in fact, his nickname is “The Chef in the Hat.” His Seattle restaurant was featured in tons of food publications.

Missy Robbins A Voce Madison and A Voce Columbus – Charity: Grow to Learn NYC . A Georgetown grad who moved to Chicago, and like last season’s Sarah, became a student of former Master contestant Tony Mantuano. She cooked for the Obamas – and hopefully it was healthy, or else Michelle will kick her butt.

Kerry Heffernan NYC Chef – Charity: City Harvest. Part of me hopes that he is related to Kevin James’ character in King of Queens. He wound up working for Thomas Keller and Daniel Boulud and was a guest judge during All-Stars.

Debbie Gold Kansas City’s The American Restaurant – Charity: Children’s TLC. She was also a former contestant and is prominent KC chef – I was just there, and didn’t go to her place. However, I did go to an amazing BBQ restaurant connected to a gas station. Gold built 40 Sardines into a hugely successful restaurant and was nominated for “Best New Restaurant” from the James Beard Foundation. Now that’s a good name for a restaurant. Or a punk band.

Lorena Garcia Lorena Garcia’s Cocina Restaurant – Charity: Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Inc . A very good looking woman from Venezuela, she left law school for cooking. Her restaurant is in the Miami airport – which beat the hell out of a Cinnabun. She was also a guest chef on All-Stars.

Mark Gaier Arrows – Charity: Equality Maine Foundation. That’s right – a gay man name Gaier. That’s like my college astronomy professor named Telesca. True story. Mark’s Maine restaurant was chosen as “One of America’s 10 Most Romantic Restaurants” by Bon Appétit and “One of America’s Top 50 Restaurants” by Gourmet.

Clark Frasier – Arrows – Charity: Outright Lewiston/Auburn. Mark’s partner – at home and at work. And they look exactly the same. So that will be fun for me to recap. They look like how the band Nelson would look today – if they became a gay chef couple.

Chris Cosentino Incanto Restaurant in San Fran – Charity: Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research. Cosentino has been notably featured on the Food Network in The Next Iron Chef America and Chefs vs. City. He’s also got a line of clothes – but I don’t expect him to show up on Project Runway.

Season 4 takes place in Vegas. Vegas, baby! Vegas! They gather in the kitchen and we discover that Yeo (sorry, it’s shorter than her first name) was once Chris’ boss. Chris actually utters that they “all can cook in our places of business.” Really? I thought this was Top Chef Amateurs. Sigh.

Stone tells them that we are in Vegas and they will have to do Vegas things this season. In this case, play food blackjack. They are paired up and are dealt two cards per team – however, instead of 21; they are getting ingredients on the cards. They only get 15 minutes to cook, and Chris laments that his catfish is whole, so he has to filet it in that time. After some frantic cooking, the teams put out their plates. Of course, the Masters are judged by three casino dealers. Because that makes sense. The one guy is name Bryon. Not Byron, which is what I spelled out at first. Bryon. He spells it that way, making me instantly hate him.

Big Brother 14, July 26 – The Game Is “Shaping Up”

Right now Chill Town 2 is sitting pretty up in the HoH. But if they don't win HoH this time, they could be targeted in a big way. It's likely to be a physical competition this week, and if that's the case, it paints favorably for Shane or Wil to win. Chill Town 2 might want to hold down their laughing from the DR.

After Frank nominates Danielle to replace Shane on the block, she remarks that Dan's abandoning her. She doesn't think she'll even get Shane's vote. Things haven't been going well for her, but even with everyone's backs turned towards her, she thinks she'll still stay. Frank notes he and Boogie are working with Janelle's team, so Danielle was the only choice. The group is too tight to start making waves this early. JoJo thinks it's a good thing she's up against Danielle, because if she goes, Dan goes too. She wants to make sure the house knows that, along with all the other reasons she should stay over Danielle.

Dan finds Danielle and tells her he abandoned her for a reason. She hopes it's a very good reason. He explains in the DR that he told her she'd be alone to motivate her and and light a fire under her to get her going. His intention wasn't to make her upset, and he realizes now he might have gone too far. It's his job as coach to reel her back in and get her to focus. He tries to explain that to her and apologizes, then promises to help her get out of this mess. She tells the DR his plan hurt her feelings, but she knows he had good intentions.

In the Have Not room, Shane tells JoJo to remember there's always a way back into the game and he vows to keep her in it. Ian enters and they abandon their discussion. He turns the light off and Shane announces that it's roasting in there and that he's down to his thong. JoJo says she's about to take her pants off as well. Shane tells her to come over there with him, but she doesn't want him to tempt her like that. Ian is “skeeved out by it.”

JoJo asks to make out, and Shane tells her he doesn't kiss smokers, but she promises that she brushed her teeth. Ian jokes that he's stuck in the room while Shane is trying to board the Staten Island Ferry. Shane and JoJo start talking about kissing abilities, and Ian adds that he's been told he's heavy on the tongue. Umm, TMI.

Danielle tells Ian the next day that she heard all of them talking the night before, and he tells her JoJo and Shane were joking about climbing on top of each other. Danielle looks shocked, because of all the flirting Shane has been doing with her. She gets upset and says “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

Danielle enters a room with Janelle and Ashley and asks if they want to lay out. They're thinking about it, but Janelle says she's a lazy bitch. Danielle suggest they go back to when Janelle was single. And if that's the case, Janelle says the guys have to be tall. Ashley says Shane is too little, and she's afraid she'd crush him in bed. She thinks he's becoming “emancipated,” explaining it's when you're so skinny you start to get introverted and your insides get stuck in your shoulders. Sigh. They all agree if they weighed what Britney does they wouldn't care about small guys. Janelle says her breast implants alone weigh about 8-1/2 pounds.

Danielle tells the other two girls what Ian had told her about Shane and JoJo. Danielle admits it hurts that she lost to Staten Island. Janelle knows how dangerous a showmance can be, because she's been in them before. They'll take each other to the end and vote together. This is making her want to get JoJo out. Pretty smart Danielle, she gets revenge against this girl moving in on her guy in more than a couple ways.

JoJo enters the HoH room and finds Britney. She tells JoJo she's not sure if she's staying. She definitely doesn't want to lose two players in one week, though, after Wille's removal from the game. Britney tells her to stay quiet and not to tallk crap about anyone. It has to be all pink roses and rainbows coming out of her mouth. It's also bad news for JoJo that Danielle and Janelle are now buddy-buddy. Britney goes down to the DR and does her impression of JoJo, “Yeah. No. I know. I know. No. No. Yeah. Yeah. I know,” then utters the obvious, “Obviously you don't freaking know.”

Britney talks to Boogie while eating beef jerky, and tells him not to send JoJo home after Danielle. She wants him to know Danielle is smarter than he thinks she is. Boogie just smiles. She can't have JoJo running around in circles and laughing and saying I know to everyone. She wants to force her to let her do all the talking. He knows the only reason to keep Danielle is if the coaches do come into the game.

Boogie knows it sounds weird to want to keep Dan, but he thinks everyone else's automatic instinct will be to target the coaches. She asks if he could convince Ian to work with him, and he's pretty sure he could. He believes she just rested her case. She points out he has the numbers in the house, and he's fully aware he has all the power. They don't have anything against Dan, but they wouldn't mind seeing him pack a bag and leave on Thursday.

After another look at the moments right before Willie left the house, Julie Chen talks to the houseguests live. She asks Joe what was going through his mind when things with Willie were escalating. He wanted to protect himself, and to also tell Willie if he can't handle the heat to stay out of the kitchen Julie figures he means the bathroom. Ian was in the bathroom in his towel and tells Julie he was extremely worried for his safely, but from working as an R.A. at Tulane, he wanted to step in and break it up.

The houseguests get treated to the video of the BB Cantina competition for the first time. Britney explains she thought it was incredible and she was so happy and proud of Shane winning. It was well worth her jumping into a giant bowl of guacamole.

Britney mentions to Boogie that some people thought Wil would be back, and Boogie adds an “I wish,” because he's fun, smart, and saracastic. Dr. Will speaks from his Dr. Tattoof office. As soon as he and Boogie met, he knew they'd be good friends. Some alliances stab you in the back, but Chill Town stabs you in the front. This is Boogie's first time in the house without him, and he thinks he's doing a good job with his team. He's coaching Frank to be his new Frankenstein. He thinks he's trying to build a bigger Chill Town member. Boogie's ego got to him though in the Coaches Comp.
