Q&A with Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva guest star Patty Duke

Lifetime’s critically acclaimed hit series, Drop Dead Diva, is back for a fourth season on Sundays at 9/8c. The legendary Patty Duke (The Patty Duke Show, Valley of the Dolls),, part of the industry since 1958, guest stars on the series as Rita Curtis. She took part in a recentQ&A to discuss her character and what it is like to be Patty Duke. She is happy to be a part of the series because “It’s so much fun, and I discovered new things about the role as we went along.

Patty enjoyed the cast, and after fifty five years of working in this industry, she enjoyed the camaraderie on the set. There was not one person onset who was not gracious and kind.” She found star Brooke Elliott to have a great sense of humor. Patty had a blast on the set and really enjoyed working with her. “She’s brilliant and very loving, honest to God. I was just thrilled to have the opportunity to work with these people.”

Patty’s favorite moment working on the set involved even involved Brooke. “Oddly enough, it was the scene where Brooke has to go through pages and pages of lawyer stuff, and I felt that I was being transported by this creature who could not only remember all the words, but deliver them with such energy and intelligence.”

Patty enjoyed the role mainly for the comedic purposes. “Laughter is crucial to me.” That was one of the main reasons she accepted the role of Rita. She loves dramatic roles, but finds “comedy much harder than drama, but I’ll do both.” She is incredibly versatile and thrives off the energy of others. She also realized there is quite a bit of her character Rita in her.

A role that Patty still wants to conquer is Mary Lincoln, “The timing is perfect. I am now a year away and getting ready for the process to play Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. First we’ll play it in the museum in Illinois, and then at the Ford Theater.” She has missed her chance to play Mary Lincoln in the past and will not let the role slip away this time around.

Patty has done so much in her career with film and television and would love to be a part of the television show, Big Bang Theory. “I would feel that I’d died and went to heaven if I could get the part of Memaw on the Big Bang Theory.” Patty’s work with Richard Crenna has been some of her favorite work. “His work ethic, his sense of humor and grace … he’s gone seven years now but I still think of him and miss him.”

If you are looking for acting advice, Patty is certainly an amazing candidate to pass that along. “We have to be realistic; you should definitely have a day or night job. It’s very hard to be realistic when your passion is so great and you know in your heart that you do this play or film. It is one of the toughest industries to be a part of.”

Patty recently decided it was time to join the social networks. “I’m astonished at the speed the information is exchanged.” She is happy to be able to keep in touch with her fanbase and a new generation of fans. Patty discussed her proudest moment in regard to her career. “I guess I would have to say Miracle Worker and Birdbath, which was done on public television and written by Leonard Malfee.”

Patty’s amazing career continues. She is a legend who holds a special place in so many of our hearts. Be sure to watch her on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva, Sundays at 9/8c. And as Patty says, “the last to laugh is to live.”

So You Think You Can Dance, June 20 – No Time for Drama

With the beginning of Las Vegas week tonight on So You Think You Can Dance, I’m hoping to see more of the inspirational stories. So many of the auditioners had such gripping stories, that now it seems that’s what the whole season is going to be built around. I want to be inspired, and I want to see some great dancing.

The judges for Vegas week are Lil’ C, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Tyce Diorio, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe. The first thing they’re going to ask the dancers to do is a solo, and if the judges aren’t impressed, the dancers will go home quickly. Nigel promises massive cuts.

First up is Hampton “The Exorcist” Williams, 21, of Richardson, as. His audition received the longest standing O of the whole tour and made Mary cry. This time he’s making Adam and Tyce seem like they’re going to break down crying. There is just something so moving about his performances. He’ll be a tough act to follow. The first ten performers are called back upstage, and two girls are let go, while the rest, including Hampton, stay.

Janelle Issis, 23, of Birmingham, AL, announces she is going to rock it out and is excited to be the only belly dancer there. Tyce loves it after just the first few seconds, and Adam and Nigel celebrate at the end as Nigel quips, “If only she were sexy.”

As more auditioners show their wares, the judges seem to love every moment of it. They all look great. However, by the end of the solos, forty-two auditioners, including martial arts dancer Tim Conkle, are sent home. Tim says he loved every second of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

At 5:00 P.M. on day one, the remaining dancers are asked to learn a hip hop routine from Twitch and Comfort. He says for this season, they’re bringing something totally different for the hip hop game. She explains the whole dance is about the groove and the funk, is from ATL, and is funky. He expects to see energy, character, and people breathing really, really hard. If you’re not sweating, you’re not doing it right.

Hampton and the Dragon House Crew – Andre, Boris, and Cyrus – went straight to Vegas, so it’s the first time for them learning someone else’s choreography. After they’ve barely started, Hampton takes the stage and tells the judges the choreography is a little too fast for him. They let him bow out, and remind him how great he was to have three of the judges crying. Andre from Dragon House isn’t having an easy time of it either. He admits it’s the hardest thing he’s ever had to do; it feels foreign to him. Cat asks if he’s going to talk to the judges, but he says he’s just going to leave. The other guys tell him he has to at least try. He does in fact just leave.

Once it comes down to performing, it’s Boris in the first group. It’s hard, but he promises to try his best. The judges discuss the dancers afterwards, and overheard is “He does it, but it’s just not right.” Do they mean Boris? Boris is asked to step forward. Nigel tells him it’s hip hop, so he should have been better, but he’s a popper. He didn’t even have a feel for it, though, and it’s the area they expect him to be good in. They let him go, as Nigel apologizes saying, he’s such a supporter of Dragon House. Boris is disappointed, but vows to not let it stop him.

Also leaving in this round is Gene Lenardo, who danced like a praying mantis in his audition, He claims, “I got buck, and now I’m going home.” Bree Hafen, mother of two, is also leaving. She has two beautiful kids to go home to, though, and truthfully, they’re what matters to her most. There are ninety-seven still left.

Cyrus is the only one left of Dragon House, and his group is the last one up. He’s partnered with a female dancer as they explain he’s a popper animated robot, and she doesn’t do hip hop, so they’re both struggling. Cyrus looks to be doing better than his buddies. Maybe he’ll be the first Dragon to go through. The judges are overheard talking about “Let’s just do this; there’s no other alternative.” Are all the Dragons going to end up leaving in this round? I’m thinking not, because they made such a big deal about them from the auditions on. Nigel puts them all through. Cyrus is shocked.

It’s onto the Broadway choreography round on day two. Tyce is there teaching them the steps. He explains the scenario of 2 AM in a club, and the dancers take a break to drink water, and suddenly they all start lusting after each other. It’s a routine even he calls hard and a bitch.

Ballroom dancers Witney Carson and Lindsay Arnold are roommates in Vegas, and it turns out they have known each other since they were 9 years old and really good friends. They’re both in the first Broadway group in front of the judges. They both move on, along with the rest of their group. Many of the other groups do just as well.

Alexa Anderson is ready to go onstage with her group. Last season, she was the final person cut before the final twenty. She believes she’s improved since then by learning to relax and breathe. She thinks this is her year. Tyce just sits with his mouth hanging open staring at her. Tyce says to the others, “She’s so unbelievable, yet nothing’s happening,” meaning in her face. They told her last time she could be everything, Adam says he’s sick of saving her. Wow.

Adam comes right out with out then and asks Alexa to step forward. He’s honest with her, repeating what he just said to the other judges. She is so frustrating, because she has so much going on and could be the star winner of the show, but they’re debating putting her through, because she’s dead and giving them no light. She’s asked if it’s just nerves, but says no, as she was actually kind of excited. He tells her to dance like she wants it and connect with her partner, because she can. Stepping back in line, Her partner, Joseph, and another Tre, are let go while the rest of the groups makes it. Alexa is scared, because she sees last year happening all over again.

Teddy Tedhol, who’s been here before, is told he needs to have more growth and is let go by Tyce. He is disappointed. He’s not alone, though, leaving with twenty-one other dancers. Teddy can’t please the judges and doesn’t know how to fix it. He wonders why he should even bother to come back. He just “loves to be reprimanded in public.” Well, isn’t that the whole point of an audition, putting yourself out there like that? He promises to never come back to this.

Real Housewives of Orange County – Ep. 19 “Let Them Eat Cake”

Cake, former housewife, fur coat, and bling.

Tamra wants to share her good news with the other O.C. ladies. She meets with Heather first and shows off her engagement bling.

Gretchen shows up in the biggest feather-ish blue earring I’ve ever seen, and matching blue denim pants.

Tamra shows to women her photo book of she and Eddie in Bora Bora, cluing in Gretchen that he proposed.

Time to show off that sparkling ring again.

On the outside, Gretchen’s super happy for Tamra.

On the inside “Tamara just signed her divorce papers…” And now she’s jumping back into marriage.

Alexis has dinner with Sara, remember the tipsy chick who ruined bowling and champagne night?

Uh yah. Alexis tells how the girls ambushed her with some sort of intervention, bruising her ribs and all.

She even tells how Gretchen hurt her feelings and sided with the other women. And thus Alexis invites crazy Sara along to Heather’s party.

Oh by the way, people—Heather’s throwing a party to celebrate and announce finally taking her husband’s name after about fifteen years of marriage.

The Mrs. Heather Dubrow. You’re welcome, and enjoy.

It’s about time Vicki has showed up. She knows about Tamra’s engagement to Eddie and feels that it’s too soon jumping into something like that, right after finalizing a divorce.

Brooks arrives and bestows upon Vicki a black fur coat—that’s real fur.

I personally would throw red paint on it. I’m kidding. Kinda. Maybe.

When Vicki shows up at Heather’s home with it, I’m sure everybody’s going to wonder ‘how in the world can Brooks afford this’?

The first set to arrive: Handsome Eddie and Tamra. Tamra’s shimmering black and silver cocktail dress is just smoking on her.

The next set soon after is Alexis and Crazy Sara. Fake hellos and kisses are exchanged. Is there any wonder why the impending awkwardness exists, after Costa Rica.

Brooks and Vicki’s eyes are filled with wonder and awe at Heather’s magnificent home.

Lastly, Gretchen, Gretchen’s long 1950’s white feathered gown coat, Slade, and Slade’s CSI:Miami shades arrive.

As I said, Vicki shows off the new fur coat Brooks “bought” her and everyone questions the validity of that claim.

Other guests arrive and among them, Jeana (former O.C. housewife) steps onto the scene. She’s a guest of Gretchen’s.

I didn’t know Heather’s party was that of a club or something where directly invited guests could bring a plus-one, or plus-two.

Tamra takes Jeana’s daughter, Kara, aside to discuss the drink throwing of past season. Jeana soon joins them.

Tamra gets teary-eyed while explaining why she threw wine on Jeana and apologizing for it.

Heather’s friend informs her that Crazy Sara broke the bow off of Heather’s cake and ate it.

That cake is the most important thing at the party because it symbolizes so much…to Heather. It’s quite a center piece.

Heather tells the other girls and Tamra confronts Crazy Sara first and then Heather handles her, with a glass of champagne in hand.

I doubt she’ll waste her champ on this woman though.

Alexis comes in defending Crazy Sara because she feels Heather’s overreacting over a freaking bow on a freaking cake.

It’s about the go down. Over a cake, believe.

On the next episode: part two of this season finale. Tamra and Vicki get into it. Yes, that means Vicki “The Screamer” Gunvalson will make an appearance.

Real Housewives of New Jersey – Ep.8: “Best Friends for Never”

Friendship, breakups, dieting, and “bankruptcy.”

Jacqueline gets disappointing news about Ashlee’s progress in Texas with her father. She’s so fed up with Ashlee and her obstinate ways that she takes to a bottle of whiskey, at least I’m pretty sure it’s whiskey—you know, the strong stuff.

I wonder how many other kids have driven their parents to drink on frequent occasions.

Lauren is at the end of her ropes with dieting to get super skinny in order to become super attractive to others and boast her self-esteem.

It’s like Italians and dieting just don’t mix—or any culture where food is essence. People love food. I personally don’t think depriving the body of such delicious food is good.

On a boring, rainy day the Albie, Gregg, and Lauren are all just laying around. Apparently they’ve been waiting on Christopher who returns with a large pizza and a hearty salad for Lauren. That food looks pretty good.

“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” This is what Lauren constantly tells herself, though it doesn’t eradicate her desires to feast.

God, I’d probably ram my head against a wall if someone told me that. It sounds utterly ridiculous to me. Skinny shouldn’t be the goal.

Teresa and Joe meet with their lawyer. Yep, you guessed it. For financial troubles. When it comes to this wonderful justice system, Teresa, the truth might now always set you free. It could land you in a jail cell. But at least your conscience would be clear.

When she’s not dealing with Ashlee drama, Jaqueline’s trying to be a dear friend to Teresa. But the thing with that is Teresa’s lies and constant denial whenever the blame shifts to her. That puts a straining on Jacqueline and their “friendship.”

Honesty would surely set Teresa free in the realm of friendship and that’s all Jacqueline wants. She doesn’t necessarily want to know the intricate and personal details of Teresa’s life.

When Teresa’s making her troubles public, at the least she could go ahead and come straight with her friends and family, instead of dodging questions she doesn’t want to answer.

And now for my favorite segment: Most Adorable Children EVER. For this installment, we spend time with the Gorgas. Antonia hula hoops better than her mommy. Gino is having a solo picnic at the table in the front yard. Little Joey is wobbling around with his sippy cup.

Kathy visits Melissa to verbalize her feelings about Teresa. Melissa has her two big sisters over at this point, enjoying drama-free family time.

While Kathy’s pouring some heart out, Melissa is powdering up her face with makeup and likely thinking “Why don’t you go directly to Teresa and tell her all this?” Oh wait, she actually tells Kathy this.

The tears are trickling out from Jacqueline. It’s clear a storm is about to come, a mini one tonight. Jacqueline sits down outside on her back patio with Teresa and asks about her financial troubles.

She had to learn about Teresa’s bankruptcy from newspapers and magazines. Teresa would likely deny it all as usual, yes.

What financial troubles, Jacqueline? Teresa is a freakin’ New York times bestseller! She works her butt off. She sells exclusive interviews to magazines.

They call Teresa with questions and force her to answer. What’s worse? They don’t even bother to check accuracy of the quotes with Teresa so whatever she says may get misconstrued by readers. Particularly readers that are family and friends.

Teresa has no control over what’s printed in the papers about herself or what she says about others at all. Right.

It’s always about Teresa. She never asks about Jacqueline’s situation, particularly Ashlee, and she doesn’t support her in the general way friends should. Jacqueline’s had it up to her neck and then some.

There’s a mini scream fest between Teresa and Jacqueline, a back-and-forth. As soon as Teresa screams, it’s heard around Franklin Lakes, New Jersey bringing Caroline out of her home to come strolling to Jacqueline’s patio.

Am I the only one scared right now?

Teresa feels ganged up on. Caroline sitting next to Jacqueline makes it visibly clear it’s going to be two-on-one. Know what that means? Teresa goes straight into defense mode.

Caroline and Teresa quickly get into it and Jaqueline’s literally in the middle with no one listening to her.

“You’re crazy!” Caroline tells Teresa.

And would you believe Teresa’s surprising response? “No you’re crazy!”

As we all foresaw, the friendship between Caroline and Teresa is kaput. The friendship between Teresa and Jacqueline is all but solid now.

I think the women have broken up with each other. Next episode will make it certain where loyalties and positions lie.

On the next episode: Teresa talks to Melissa about the Danielle Staub (former New Jersey housewife) situation. The end of Jacqueline and Teresa’s friendship as we knew it finally comes.

So You Think You Can Dance, Jun 14 – Inspirational to the Very End

I’ve had a rough couple of weeks, so I’m really looking forward to some uplifting dancing tonight. I’m hoping it’s more of the inspirational auditions from the first few weeks. I could use a little of that in this last week of auditions.

The auditions travel tonight to Salt Lake City, Utah, and the judges will be Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Adam Shankman. Mary reminds the auditioners what they don’t want to see in the dancing, and Adam demonstrates. They want no booty shaking, no self worship, and no reaching.

First up is Witney Carson, 18, of American Fork, UT, who says she will be doing Latin ballroom dancing, which she has been doing since she was 8. Interestingly, this is our first ballroom auditioner this season. She remembers watching a ballroom competition when she was younger; she knew that’s what she wanted to do. She’s going to do a sensual and sexy cha-cha and tango tonight. She likes being a woman and being sensual when she dances and knows she has to bring that confidence, even though that’s not who she is offstage.

Nigel refers to Witney as a cutie. She explains to him she just started with a new partner last August, so they haven’t competed in many competitions together. He’s not competing today, as he’s only 16. Adam decides she must be a femme fatale. She auditions with another man who also isn’t auditioning. She does some great spinning, and with her hip action reminds me of Chelsie Hightower. She gets a judges’ standing O.

Nigel tells Witney they’ve had some fabulous ballroom dancers on the show, and one of his favorites is Pasha’s partner, Anya. He finds her not only brilliant, but sensual and sexy, and that’s a gift Witney has a s well. She has great technique, great legs, great feet, great back, and add to that “a smoking hot face.” He thinks her dad will really have to look out for her.

Mary found Witney to be very girly until she went to the back and struck a pose and going straight into a woman. There’s something that just changes in her. She’s for sure what Mary would call a hot tamale. Nigel and Adam plug their ears to get ready for Mary’s oncoming scream. And it’s the first time she’s done it the entire season so far. Adam tells Witney to shut the [bleep] up as she was amazing. She is everything this show is all about. “I am a slave for you.” Of course she gets a ticket!

Cat Deeley mentions all the dance styles that have been introduced on the show and adds that until Lynn Gravatt, 33, of Portland, OR, they’d only had dance styles from planet Earth. Lynn herself calls it a “little alien space dance,” which is a mix of many different genres, as she doesn’t fit in a box. The spirit and energy that moves through her comes from the Pleiades constellation. She was in her living room with friends one day, and a force entered her body and started dancing around the room.

Lynn has three spirit guides – Divine da Flame, Devil da Flame, and Rainbow Liltebright. Devil is a beautiful man, strong, and a dancer. Divine is her highest self, what she aspires to be, and Rainbow has rainbow-colored eyes and picks out her outfits. They push her to do things she doesn’t think she’d ever do. When she dances, she feels at home, and believes her soul is from the stars. She can go into a place where she feels invincible. Cat wonders if there were any hallucinogenic drugs involved. I wonder why they’re spending so much time on someone too old to be on the show.

Lynn is currently unemployed but used to be an aerospace engineers. She worked at a large corporation in research and technology and worked there for five years, earning her Master’s. She started to feel a pull towards the creative arts, so left that field. The technology she worked with would be more implemented five, ten, or even fifteen years from now. She works with shape memory alloys and piezoelectrics. She’s still searching for herself, but feels she’s in a human body, but her soul is elsewhere, and dancing brings her most in touch with herself. If she wasn’t an aerospace engineer, Nigel would think she was slightly crazy. I think she still could be.

The actual dancing is pretty much what you would expect from Lynn. It’s a bit manic, just like her. There are a few interesting moves, then it gets bizarre. Nigel thinks it’s good to know that aliens can do chaine turns. He feels there’s a great spirit that omes across from her, a great warmth. He’s not sure she’ll find herself, but she might be happy with what she reaches, and he thinks happiness is the greatest goal she could ever find.

Mary thinks Lynn indeed looks happy, and she’s a real sweetheart. Adam doesn’t know if there’s a place for Lynn on the show, but there’s a very special place for her in this world. She explains she had a personal goal, and it was to get in front of everyone and show that life doesn’t need to be planned at 30. You can start over and be anything you want to be. The judges say no, but thank her for coming out. As she leaves, Nigel says he’s not so sure he wants to fly in an airplane in the next ten years.

After a look at auditioners who bring their family with them, including one young woman who brings her dad up onstage who she explains is an “undercover dancer,” it’s a look at Deanne “Dee” Tomasetta, 19, of Millbury, MA, who has shown up all alone, but has a very large Italian family who is kind of crazy, but not like Lynn. It’s not Jersey Shore, but every day is kind of a holiday. She’s the youngest and only girl, so has only older boy cousins and an older brother as well. She’s a little afraid to bring home a guy, as she knows there would be a lot of interrogating. Right now, her boyfriend is dance.

Nigel calls Deanna a lovely little cutie with a big smile. She tells him everyone just calls her Dee. He wants her to call him N. She wants to pursue a career in dancing, as it’s her passion. She has a lot of passion that flows through her as she dances. It’s probably all the passion she’s not able to give to a boyfriend since she prefers to be married to dance instead.

Mary tells Dee there’s one thing she knows for sure, and that’s that she loved every single second of her dance. Dee looks like she’s about to cry. She’s a beautiful dancer with elongated lines, the breath that she took, the layers, and the nuances. She couldn’t have asked for a better audition. Adam found Dee to be extremely special. She has unbelievable technique, unbelievable transition, and is completely living in her world. For someone so young, she has a beautiful wisdom about how she just danced. It was really captivating. Nigel is afraid he has to be the voice of reason … and asks her to come get a ticket to Vegas. She shares the news with her Grandma.

Gene Lonardo, 22, of Las Vegas, knows the judges want something different, and he thinks he’s pretty different. He’s near naked and painted in green splotches. He explains to Cat that his solo today will be about the life cycle of the male praying mantis, from birth, through mating, which ends horrifically for the male. Cat wonders how he’ll lose his head. Nigel is excited to see this story play out. Gene actually is a very skilled dancer, if not a little bizarre.

As the judges are laughing afterwards, Gene confirms with them, “you guys wanted different, right?” Nigel wasn’t sure what they were going to get, but adds it was not only intriguing, it was entertaining. He has fabulous technique behind all the glitter and bling. Mary admits they do ask for people to be unique, and it was certainly that. She for one loved it. Adam thinks Gene is “sort of brilliant.” He had no idea and thought it would end badly, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. He knows the choreographers would absolutely eat him up. Gene explains to Nigel the female that ate his head are the judges, as they put the fear in the dancers. Nigel adds normally when they says you’re going to Vegas, they’re not from Vegas, so Gene is going back home.
