Top Chef: Masters – Ep 9 – It Was Hawaii Which Killed The Beast

Quickfire – Make a dish and blindly coach someone else to make the same dish.

Beast and Dad – Fricassee of Mushrooms, Bacon and Shallots with a Poached Egg and Parsley – Stone thinks the egg is done beautifully. Flavors were similar in the two.

Floyd and Sister – Shrimp, Mushroom and Asparagus Stir-Fry – Sis failed to cut the asparagus so hers shoots up in the air like Bart Simpson’s hair. Stone loved the crunch of asparagus and the depth of the mushrooms.

Mary Sue and Sister – Shredded Chicken Salad with Toasted Crumbs and Sesame Seeds – Stone critiques the placement of Sis’ avocado, but it tasted good.

Traci and Brother – Halibut with Asparagus in Brown Butter Balsamic Vinaigrette – Bro’s looks spot on with hers, and Stone digs his better. He loves the acidic flavor with the rich olive oil and “Vivacious” balsamic.

Bottom Two – Floyd and Mary Sue – Floyd’s had the asparagus problem, and Mary Sue was messy and simple.

Top Two – Beast and Traci – Beast had flavorful bacon and mushrooms. Traci had nice fish, but looked as if came out of the same kitchen. Which, really, they did. Traci wins and racks up another five grand.

Elimination – Cook a buffet dinner for returning vets and their families. The guests select the winner, while Bert, Stone, Ruth and Dany judge the others.

Mary Sue – Dish 1 – Tomatillo Barbecue Ribs and Avocado Corn Relish, with Potato and Rajas – Bert’s loaded question of which is better – this or mom’s – is wisely sidestepped.

Mary Sue – Dish 2 – Apple and Cream Cheese Bread Pudding with Crema

Beast – Dish 1 – Barbecue Pork, Prawn and Cucumber Rice Salad, Iceberg Wedge with Tuna Poke – After all that, the man missed Spam the most from Hawaii. Wonderful. Dany gets an undercooked shrimp, and Guatemalan Marine’s family mocks the raw fish.

Beast – Dish 2 – Panna Cotta with Caramelized Pineapple and Ginger Tuile – Bert thinks the love comes through with her dishes, and somewhere Carla is proud. Ruth thinks the rice salad didn’t work, and Dany had that undercooked shrimp.

Traci – Dish 1 – Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Caesar Salad – One dude looked for ketchup because in the military that’s the only way you can choke down the meatloaf.

Traci – Dish 2 – Peach Cobbler – Ruth was not happy with the look of the potatoes but the taste was great. Bert passive aggressively asks if she used some new fangled salt or something. Traci cuts to the chase- he thought it was salty.

Floyd – Dish 1 – Tamarind Margarita Damn, Floyd, get down with your bad self with your four dishes. As Dany ogles Mr. Army – and I mean, the hottest judge and the hottest wife, bravo Mr. Army – we learn that he lost 26 lbs during his tour.

Floyd – Dish 2 – Roast Tenderloin with Mushroom Jus and Garlic Smashed Potatoes

Floyd – Dish 3 – Spinach Salad with Pomegranate, Broccoli, Walnuts and Bacon Vinaigrette

Floyd – Dish 4 – Clam Chowder – Dany wondered why he didn’t do more with the meat and Bert found the salad to be a riddle. Worst. Riddler prank against Batman. Ever. The seeds seemed confusing to him. Floyd explained the lack of spice required him to be creative. I hope they asked him about that coin, because it sure felt like he was using it to tug at the judge heartstrings.
