Top Chef: DC, Ep. 2 – I’m on a mission to break up Starsky and Hutch


So without further ado, and there has been plenty of ado so far, the dishes!

Quickfire – Make a sandwich when tied to another chef.

Angelo/Tracey – Flounder Marinated in Fish Sauce, Spicy Sriracha Mayo, Pickled Red Onions.
Andrea/Sbarro – “Philly Cuban” – Roasted Pork, Pickle, Whole Grain Mustard, Gruyere Cheese.
Sam likes the pickle.
Amanda/Tamesha – Prosciutto, Swiss Cheese, Dijon Mustard, and Pepper Salsa.
Moby/Tim – “Croquette Madame” – Ground Lamb, Mornay Sauce and Egg.
Jacqueline/Stephen – Salsa Vinegar Onions, California Avocado and Chicken.
Kenny/Ed – Korean Chili-Rubbed Ahi Tuna, Cucumber and Mango Slaw, Multi-Grain Bread.
  Sam liked the spice.
Kelly/Arnold – Curry-Rubbed Grilled Chicken, Honey and Sambal, Cucumber, Mint, Dill and Cilantro.
Tiffany/Lynne – Flatbread Saltimbocca, Goat Cheese, Artichokes, Peppers and White Asparagus.
  Sam finds it hard to pick it up.

Bottom Two – Stephen/Jacqueline return to the bottom due to a lack of creativity and are joined by Tiffany/Lynne for poor texture.
Top Two – Angelo/Tracey for a bright and lively dish and Kenny/Ed for perfectly seared tuna.

Angelo beats Kenny again and Tracey and Ed are there too.

Elimination Teams and Dishes:

Team Picnic
Andrea/Moby – Picnic Coleslaw with Yogurt and Grilled Apple Cider BBQ Chicken,
with the skin off, grilled and roasted.
Tim – Mac & Cheese with Whole Wheat Crust, Skim Milk and Lowfat Cheese
Sbarro – Fresh Melon Kebob and Orange Chantilly Dipped in Yogurt.

Sam likes the yogurt as being kid-friendly and healthy.  Padma likes the chicken.  Tom finds the mac and cheese to be weak and Padma likes the tasty kebob.

Sabotage Team
Tracey – Chicken Burger with Fiesta Rice.
Angelo – Peanut Butter and Celery Crudités and Tuile
Ed – Sweet Potato Puree with Cinnamon.
Kenny – Apple Bread Pudding with Cinnamon Yogurt.

Sam finds the sweet potato to have a “pound of pepper.”  Tom is ok with the pudding, and Padma agrees.  However, Sam wonders what happened to all the veggies.

Team Dysfunction
Lynne – Black Bean Cake with Crispy Sweet Potatoes
Kelly – Braised Pork Carnitas Tacos with Pickled Onions and Cilantro
Arnold – Roasted Pork Salad with Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette and Chili Oil.
Tiffany – Caramelized Sweet Potatoes and Sherbet.

Tom really likes the taco and how the salad helps cool it off well.  Gail loves the colors and thinks kids will like it.  Padma considers the cake may be a bit spicy.

Team Alcohol
Amanda – Braised Chicken Thigh with Sherry Jus.
Stephen – Sweet Onion Rice with Tomato, Carrots and Green Onions. 
Tamesha – Bean and Tomato Salad, Pickled Red Onions and Apple Cider Vinaigrette.
Jacqueline – Banana Pudding with Skim Milk and Strawberries.

Gail speculates that not many school lunchrooms serve sherry jus.  Padma likes the flavor of Tamesha’s salad.  Tom finds the pudding to be SWEET!  Gail finds Stephen’s to be mushy, and some random kid calls his “rice and nasty stuff.”

Judges Table
The coolest thing done by the show in a while – they bring in the bottom teams first! Psych! Team Picnic and Team Alcohol are there and it is time for a smackdown! Stephen is hit for not making anything of substance. Jacqueline was already on thin ice after last week’s awful pate, and this week she makes a subpar pudding full of sugar. In a challenge where nutrition was the key component. Amanda is rightfully criticized for using sherry in her meal, and having the budget to pay for that but not for Jacqueline’s dessert.

Ed gets hit for a too-spicy-for-kids meal. Kenny gets a hit for not being a leader and accounting for veggies. When he protests that tomato was on his burger, Sam reminds him that tomato is not a vegetable, it is a fruit. Tom asks Angelo if he would have made the PB&C dish if he didn’t have immunity. Angelo “can’t answer that now.” Tracey is summarily ignored.
