Big Brother 8 News and Gossip – The Good, The Bad, and the Unconfirmed

It’s that wonderful time of year again! The days leading up to another season of Big Brother are full of frenzied web searches, tuning into The Early Show to catch an announcement, and catching up with old friends on message boards. This year, of course, is no exception.

I’m going to try and combine all of the info that I’ve found so far into this article, to hopefully save you some time and bring you up to date on what’s going on. We’ve got possible spoilers, promises from execs, and lots of other news to catch up on. Ready? Me too! Let’s go!

Big Brother on Television

The Big Brother schedule hasn’t changed much from seasons past. It’ll still be on CBS on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with the premiere slated for July 5th at 8 pm Eastern. The show will be followed on that night by Pirate Master, which will then move to Tuesday nights at 10 pm.

Thursday night’s shows will once again feature the live evictions and Head of Household competitions.

Also on the TV roster is Big Brother: After Dark. This wonderful little idea of a show will air on ShoToo, a sister station to Showtime, and contain 3 uncensored hours of live feed action from 9pm to midnight, BB time. (That’s midnight to 3 am Eastern.) The difference between watching After Dark and having the live feeds is that ShoToo will only be airing the footage from a single camera, whereas the feeds show us all four.

Big Brother Online

The official Big Brother 8 website isn’t up yet, but when it is it’ll be located here.

House Calls, the internet talk show, will return with Gretchen Massey as host. Marcellas Reynolds will not be returning to the show, and there’s no official word on whether or not Gretchen will have a permanent co-host. Expect to see a revolving door of guest hosts on the show, much like last season. House Calls can be viewed at the Big Brother 8 website, and airs weekdays at 1 pm Eastern.

The website will also feature interactive stuff like polls and a chat room, as well as the usual house tour, contestant bios, photo galleries, and show recaps. The Head of Household blog will also be back, but there’s been no word on whether or not past houseguests will also be blogging on the site.

Big Brother Live Feeds

Here’s the scoop on the live feeds this season. Once again CBS has teamed up with Real Networks to bring the live feeds to us. You can sign up for the feeds already, and they’re offering a special discount price deal if you subscribe before July 4th. There’s no coupon code needed if you use the above link, as the code will appear for you. (On the off chance it doesn’t, however, use BB8EARLY in the coupon code box.)

You’ll get 3 days free to fiddle with the settings and make sure everything is working properly, and the three-month deal is guaranteed to cover the entire season. Alternatively, you can opt to pay monthly or sign up for 6 months to catch the action all over again once the show is finished.

Here at Reality Shack we’ll be bringing you our usual in-depth coverage of the live feed action. LauraBelle and I will be providing daily recaps of all the action in the Big Brother house, we’ve got a great Photo Gallery that will include still images taken from the feeds, and the forum will be jumping with news and updates. Join us for all the fun!

Big Brother Rumors and Gossip

This section potentially contains spoilers, so if you want to avoid them please click away now.

Still with me? Great! You’ve been warned!

First, the theme of the new season. It’s been widely rumoured that the theme of Big Brother 8 will be high school enemies. This means that we’ll have a bunch of people in the house who already know at least one other person, much like the last few seasons. For those of us who enjoy the element of having strangers in the house, it looks like we’ll have to wait for another season to see this happen again. On the plus side, old grudges are sure to stir up some tension in the house, so that could lead to drama. Drama is good, for the most part.

You may have heard the gossip about Rob Mariano appearing as a contestant on the show this season. I can’t see it happening, but the rumour has spread pretty wildly. It was even suggested (thanks to someone posting the info at Wikipedia) that Lex van den Berghe would be joining Rob as his nemesis. I’ve heard from a reliable source that Lex has no plans to do Big Brother, but the Boston Rob thing still persists. It wouldn’t surprise me if Mariano showed up to help with a competition or something like that, since he’ll be wanting to keep himself in the media to promote his own new reality show. But a houseguest? I doubt it.

There’s also been a cast list leaked to various message boards, and no one seems sure if it’s credible or not. If you want to see the list, head over to my new Big Brother blog and check it out. Just take this info with a grain of salt!

Miscellaneous Big Brother News and Updates

There are a couple of other tidbits that have come out in the past few weeks.

Julie Chen will be appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman on June 28th. While she probably won’t be revealing the cast or many other details of the show, it’ll be worth a watch just to see what she does say. There’s no information up yet on The Early Show website to hint at a house tour or a cast reveal yet, but that should be showing up any time.

Finally, a recent article at Variety magazine quotes some of the show’s big cheeses as saying that this season will be more interactive, and give “(die-hard fans) the opportunity to participate even more than they have in the past.” As long as they don’t return to the format of the first season, this is a good thing.
